I Hate Dell

NEW REPLY TO THIS THREAD. I DO HATE DELL.

I bought an XPS M1530 laptop...Dell's high-end 15" screen laptop.

Problems I have had:
1. Over heating
2. Touch pad going out
3. Motherboard being replaced twice
4. DVD drive not reading any disc
5. AC adapter failing
6. Battery dieing prematurely
7. LCD hinge starting to go VERY LOOSE
8 and now.....my rant for #8.

THE DAY THE WARRANTY EXPIRES, MY LAPTOP motherboard needs to be replaced yet AGAIN. The AC adapter does not charge the battery anymore. The battery is fine, the AC adapter is fine, the motherboard is SCREWED.

I messaged Dell and they sent me an email telling me how to trouble shoot it. Great. So, I did everything and shot off an email saying nothing worked. I got a reply the next day saying that since my warranty expired there's nothing they could do. WHAT!? So, I got on chat and talked to a rep for 20 minutes. We argued back and forth about the date in which I sent off the email. Two (TWO!) hours later after a dozen or so email forwarding of proof that i sent the email when my warranty was valid and finally they said "as a courtesy we will replace the parts."

TWO hours of arguing because of one freaking day on the warranty.

Then, after all of this they have the balls to suggest I buy a $500 warranty from them, saying "it is in your best interest." Well, if the build quality is as shitty as it seems then of course I should get a warranty to fix future problems. But $500!?!? No thanks DELL.

Next time I'm going with HP, Sony, Acer or maybe even Asus. SCREW YOU DELL.

I have a M1330 I feel your pain at least mine is still under warranty. Getting my 3rd mobo sometime this week.

I had a customer who's Dell PSU unit went bad. (This was when they where using power supplies that where wired non-standard.) I told him for the extra cost we could get it with next day shipping. So I ordered it up only to get an email the next day that it would ship out in the next week! I called and asked why I just paid for next day shipping when it wouldnt ship for a week. Their reply: "Well, when it ships it will be next day." WTF??!! That kinda defeats the purpose of next day shipping. Anyway the customer agreed to wait the week. A week later I get another email from Dell, the power supply is back ordered for a MONTH! Fuck you very much Dell.

wow i never knew this thread existed. Here is my story. Several years ago (7?) i ordered a sony pda from dell. It was one of those $500 ones that swivel. Long story short. I ordered 1. They sent me 2. They charged me for 2. My cc expired soon after (during which I was in contact with dell trying to figure out what to do). I got an rma number and sent it back. They said they never received it although someone signed for it. Then they said they couldnt credit it since my cc expired. I complained over and over again. And soon they started to ignore me. and my cc wouldnt help. so i lost $500. fuck you dell. Since then i never bought anything from them again. and i go out of my way to order every price mistake they have.

It seems like all of Dell's XPS notebooks suck. I had the 1340 for a while, and I couldn't stand it. Constant BSODs for no reason, 2 new motherboards, a new screen, new hard drive, all within a month of owning it, and none of those even fixed the initial problem. Dell reps suck at their jobs...

I stay away from Dell.....Far away

My sister has a Dell printer that I end up having to fix pretty much once a week. I eventually stuck my foot through it and bought her something that isn't such a piece of shit.

Kyle, you forgot to talk to a Manager and tell them 12,000+ plus people would be reading about their denial of service.;)

They're horrible, cheap cheap garbage.

Well, it DOES stand for "Xtraordindary Piece of S..."

Even though the build quality has gone down a little since they took over from IBM, I still recommend ThinkPads for non-gamers.

Thats pretty much dells SOP, instead of fixing problem just band aid issues until you're out of warranty.
the vertical line issue's i had with my screen where very common with the first 1920x1200 screens. instead of sending out an updated screen from a later model xps they just sent me old stock til i was out of warranty. (also each time i needed a replacement they would send out 3 or 4 crap screens before i would get a usable one, that would only last a year tops)
next laptop will probably be an asus, im done with dell

Well, at least their monitors are nice.

Yup, its the one single solitary thing that they actually do well. Its not NEC or Apple but its damn good, and they're bringing IPS panels closer to the price range of MVA and TN displays. Always a good thing because if it isn't IPS its crap. :D

Their servers are pretty good too. I've 4 PowerEdges in my office and they've never disappoint me. One of them's an older PowerEdge 2800 with a single core 32-bit Xeon 3ghz from the P4 days and it's been the Exchange email server running Win2003 SBS (first release) for 5+ years and counting. It's never failed me.

dell business support is good, their XPS/Alienware support is ok, but for everything else... its horrible!! Sorry to hear your issues Kyle.

I remember reading something about some kind of special tech support for their XPS computers in an ad once. That's funny. "OK, if you buy one of our high priced computers or business models we'll let you talk to the good people; if you buy our cheap stuff you can just talk to this guy we pulled off the street."

We HAD 5 Dell systems at work. Today I've ripped out the last one (Dimension E520) and replaced it with my own build.

I convinced the owner last year that since every single one of the systems have had problems and continue to be unstable that it's not worth the time and effort to keep fixing and diagnosing the problems. So we've switched over to my own builds, all of which have been running superbly without issue (except a Seagate drive that died during the 72-hour burn in).

Dell...you screwed yourself.

One of my old bosses from a temp agency job I had, was on the phone to Dell trying to get some warranty work done, ultimately they refused to honour the warranty because the monitor was not directly purchased by our company, but the reseller that sold them to us.

Also got a couple of Dell slim line workstations, that are totally worthless POS, 3 years in use and they are ready to see the land fill.

Now im getting the shaft, call today to get my monitor replaced as the power button is getting even harder to work, i call them quote the serial number and apparently it doesn't exist. The number is the same on the box as on the back of the monitor but i keep being told that its not showing on their system.

What's the serial number?

Dell sucks. Just a fact of life, as sure and true as the blue skies, green grass, death and taxes.

It is a freaking tragedy that nice computers looking systems like Alienware is owned by Dell.

As a IT Tech with GOLD Customer Support, Dell is amazing, I call them up and get what I want the second I ask for it.

As a personal customer,.... another story

I bought 2 P2310H monitors from them 12/23/09... they have delayed my shipment 3 times now

Still saying it will not be shipped out tell the 21st... shipped out, so I will not see them tell the end of this month... AND I ORDERED THEM A MONTH AGO.

what do the make a monitor every time someone orders one?, WTF OMFG ReALLY!!!!

I should have ordered through work, end of story

I'm getting a bit nervous as I'm probably going to order a low end Dell PC for my parents pretty soon. They live halfway across the country for me, so if they have a hard time setting it up, then it's going to suck if they have to call Dell tech support and spend hours w/ them trying to get it up and running. It could be a case of the blind leading the deaf (or vice versa).

Don't worry, the deaf can lead the blind (via chatting online). ;)

LogMeIn Free is your friend. Set it up on yours and your parent's computer and don't bother explaining anything to them when they need help. Just remote in and take over fixing it.

No hassle, no arguing, so pulling your hair out.

Took a pic of it earlier was i was being told i must have been quoting it wrong.

huh? lol.

Don't confuse those zero's with O's. And the end is a little skewed. Looks like 257S.

Not sure if the tech on the line tried replacing characters or what.

Sad to see this happen...

There was once a time, when Dell had the best customer service in the industry. Dell had the highest quality rating, as well as customer service rating at a time when having both graded highly was rare. Companies such as Micron had great customer service, but mediocre quality. Gateway 2000 had good grades in both areas, Quantex had mediocre scores.

Of course, companies the likes of Comtrade and Packard Bell had rotten scores in both areas.

These days, it's sadly starting to sound much like how Packard Bell treated its customers back in the 90's.

Back in those days, PB would put you on hold (nevermind the fact that their tech support / customer service was not a toll-free call), and disconnect you 30 minutes later. If you did happen to get a hold of a live rep, you would be given the runaround. They would accuse you of tampering with the system, and void your warranty. Or, they would keep sending you the same defective part over and over again (at your expense), until your warranty expired, at which point they would tell you to piss off.

Is this what Dell has become? I hope not...

They read it back to me and it was the same as i had on my end.

Yet for whatever reason im being told it doesn't exist.

I can have my guy check on it if you want. But the thing with monitors is that serial number has the manufacturer date on it. There's a 3 year warranty on all monitors + peripherals, so they can actually replace it under a dummy tag as long as it's under warranty. I've done it before.

Dude, I spent 45 minutes on hold one day and then when I finally talked to someone, they told me I was in the wrong place (I wasn't). When the guy transferred me, I heard someone pick up the phone and hang it up on me right away.

I called back again and had the same thing happend.

After an hour and a half on hold and two hang ups, I called back, immediately asked for a manager, and threatened to kill of them...I was so furious. Thank god they didn't charge me with terrorism or somthing.

I threatened and swore enough to get my return though and I have to say, I'm thinking twice about ordering from them again.

In fact, I'm starting to put a lot of weight on where support is located when I am deciding on what product to buy.

This happens a lot with many companies now. Modern customer service is a few boxes on a spread sheet that big wigs push around. You guys should see how large companies rate their own customer service, and I can certainly tell you getting the issue resolved is NOT high on the priority list. Reps just need to hit some key points on the calls, and make sure the calls are as short as possible. The only goal is to make the number on the spread sheet smaller. Provind CS has gone from the art of helping customers to a war of low cost call centers (mostly overseas) constantly undercutting each other to provide more savings. When I was working for Dell CS as an escalation specialist and trainer (2000 to 2002), we could not even accurately track where calls wents. Reps could transfer calls to themselves, then hang up and mark an issues as resolved.

The company I work for now actually does their own tech support in the same building we use to develop the products and manage everything. Its great.

Just saw this pop up in my subscription list, so I thought I'd contribute my most recent experience. I tried installing Windows 7 on my laptop (Dell Latitude XT2) last week and the external DVD-RW drive it came with wouldn't speed up with the disc in, just grind and grind. Sounds like a dead drive to me, so I called Dell Small Business support Saturday morning to get a new one. While I was calling, I thought I'd ask for a new charger, as the one I had was finicky and would sometimes lose signal and stop charging. I was on the phone with a CS rep (David I think his name was). The phone call took about 20 minutes total, including the obligatory "troubleshooting" (evidently they can't just accept "dude, it's dead," which I understand). Tuesday morning, a brand new charger and DVD-RW drive showed up via Fedex on my door step, and the old parts went off on my way home from work. Absolutely zero charge to me, no hassles, no problems.

Well its definately under warranty, build date is feb 2007, sounds like im just being messed about. Gonna try again on monday to see if i can get someone with half a clue what theyre doing.

Ineptitude and incompetence is 1/2 of Dell's problem. What do you expect, when your call goes halfway around the world in India, when the problem starts with them not understanding you and ends with YOU not understanding them.

I swear to God Dell, if you paid some well trained Americans to do the same job in 1/2 the time that you pay the Indians to eventually drop your call, your tech support costs might cost the same while your brand appeal and sales would probably sky rocket.

Ah well, I really don't give a shit. Dell as a company can crash and burn, someone better will take its place.

I've found that the quality of Dell gear has improved greatly the past 2-3 years. However, we had a battery issue with the GF's Inspiron about 3 years ago. Called up Dell Support got through to India, they got us to run through a BIOS update, didnt help. Then they said they would send out a new battery.

A week later a Dell parcel arrives but its rather light. Inside is a Bluetooth module!!!!

Another call to India gets an apology and a week later a new battery arrived. That did fix the issue.

Still have the BT module somewhere.

It's not necessarily b/c of this thread, but I decided to get an HP PC over a Dell one for my folks.

Honestly probably a worse decision... Dell gets a bad rep, but I have no problem recommending them... their support has improved a lot. No company is perfect, but Dell is decent...

All of these large companies have poor CS rep. b/c of the outsourcing they do. : \
