can someone explain to me the significance of cable speed because ive seen ethernet like cat5e with speeds of 100Mhz, 300Mhz, 550Mhz and so on.... why are there speeds, what it is for, how is it determined, where is it used, etc?

thanks

The Mhz is how fast the electrical signal is being sent through the wire. Different standards use a higher frequency to get more bits per a second throughput. Networking speeds are shown in Mbps though.

cable as in ethernet wiring

yea, but how fast is good though? and whats the average and whats good enough?

For home LAN, there's no real reason to pay attention to the MHz rating. Unless you've got all gigabit-rated equipment, just buy standard Cat5/100Mbps -- it'll be fine.

well, i saw this cable kit a while ago... good price, like $40 or 60 for 1000ft of 100Mhz cat5e, crimper, line tester and plugs

then i also saw other speeds faster than 100Mhz which got me thinking it might be a bad cable or something....

also, where can i buy a roll of cat5e cable for cheap?

thanks

I got my wire, keystone jacks and wallplates at Dalco . I was very satisfied with the products and service. They're in Ohio, and I'm in New York, so I got everything in about 3 days. Hope this helped!

if you need alot of cable I suggest going to home depot and getting the 1000' spool of cat 5e, it is some of the best priced cable ive ever used. and I have never had any problems with it. The going rate is about $54 for 1000'

Home Depot and lowes both carry Ideal Technologies netwroking tools and Leviton Plates and Jacks, both of which are of GREAT quality.

I am sure they have 500 ft rolls at home depot, and I think they may have 250 footers too, but im not sure.

Sorry 'bout the "off-topic-ness", but I WAS asked...
I'm in Sorrycuse...a sorry excuse for a city. I'm actually in a 'burb, since the city is a hole. And we're going to have the fifth annual Street Rod Nationals this weekend...last year there were 7000 cars (rods and customs...great quality too.) If you can possibly make it here this weekend, it will be a great show. The Nationals themselves are at the State Fairgrounds on Sunday, but the real fun is at all the cruise spots around town on Friday and Saturday night. If anyone wants more info, I'll start a dedicated thread (didn't mean to hijack this one. You may now return to your regularly-scheduled lives!) Hope this helped!

uhh, thanks?... but how is that relevant?

yeah the leviton tools are basically all I use. for the money they are great products.

the reason I mentioned the 1000' spools is becaus a 100' spool costs $22 and a 1000' spool costs $53

by the time you buy 200' of cable you could have an extra 800 for virtually the same price. And this can also be used to make your own custom length patch cables.

This man is the winner. Buying in bulk at Home Depot is the way to go... 5 pack of wall plates is like 7 dollars compared to 1.75 each
