Well I guess its the end of the line for me for awhile. My 4890 shit the bed. I was playing stalker the Fan Ramped up to 100% and it just died. I Baked the card & it lets me on the PC but its a mess. Right now its idling @ 70c & when I run Furmark the damn thing goes nuts to 110c.

Just before the card died. Windows update did some updates to my PC & when I got the PC back up I noticed that windows was making Registry setting changes. Sucks ass cause im laid off so I have no funds for a new card & this card has no warranty.
 
Wonder if its an issue with those updates. Have you tried restoring to earlier point?
 
no i didnt try thanks for the tip I will give that a shot right now to be sure.
 
I swore the newer catalyst or windows update was making my 4890 run hotter a month or two ago, the fan just stayed at full speed one a couple days before I grabbed a 6870. Maybe that had something to do with it.
 
I had to take out the card it got so Hot that it reached 124c and just died. I tryed a restore point but that didnt help. it smells horrible right now like something is burnt but I cant see anything wrong no burn marks or anything. Ive been running 10.10e the entire time since they were stable.

I got an offer from a user on the Forums I wont say the users name but offered me a 5770 that he does not use anymore. We spoke & i accepted the offer. I also offered to pay him in Return once taxes come around but he Refused. He had me tearing up. I will Repay him one way or another. :)
 
When I updated to 10.12, my 4890 acted like it was fried. I used driver sweeper, then ati uninstall, then driver sweeper again and installed 10.10. All is good right now. I have never seen my screen do what it did on the 10.12. I thought the card was toast. FYI.
 
Thats awfully nice of someone on the forums to so such a nice thing. Good to see there are good people still left in this world!
 
The card wont even run at all at this point. I know its not Drivers. The smell coming from this card before it died was bad. I did take the card apart and I dont see anything wrong. Fans or anything dont work. I even popped it in my wifes PC & still wont work.

I thought about Rebaking it but im not sure if it will make any difference. I honestly cant see anything wrong with it at all. Im looking under a mag glass right now. From this point on im not buying used video cards anymore. Ive learned my lesson the card only lasted a month or so before it crapped on me

Edit: I might try another Bake and try it again in the Wifes PC to see. Id hate to give up on this card its not in my nature to let parts go to the Hardware gods.
 
I had good luck with the 5770 I bought used off of here. Ran like a champ until I sold it for 6950's. I know what ya mean about buying used stuff though, Im too poor to gamble!
 
I noticed that I didnt use aluminum foil while baking. Im going to try it with aluminum foil this time. If i have any
 
If your card is getting that hot perhaps there is something wrong with the fan. I had to send in my old 4870 to get get the fan replaced about 6 months ago. I could tell it died when I heard a loud screeching noise and my room smelled like burning electronics.
 
I got the oven Prepared now to Re-bake. might as well give it another shot. I noticed somethings in the Bake videos I watch that I may have done wrong. So I I will try again
 
Man, that's really nice of whoever it was to give you all access to his 5770. To the kind soul who did it: you really have a big heart :).

GL with the re-bake Al. Sucks that the original owner didn't register it in time. That double-lifetime warranty would have been a Godsend right now.

Good luck, I hope it works this time! I agree that the user who is sending you the 5770 is an awesome person! Also since someone mentioned that it could be the fan that is broken, perhaps buying an aftermarket fan for the card might help??
 
He wasnt the only one who offered Cards to help out So I thank everyone who offered im very much appreciated. One of the reason why I love [H]ard :) you cant beat the people on [H]ardForums

The Card was previously Water Cooled for its Life. The guy I got it from never used the stock fan on it. The stock Fan was put on one month ago. I can see where the guy had a block on the Card cause it has marks on the PCB that I never really noticed before. Looks like a poor job installing the block. Will see in an hour what happends im not very hopeful for the card to work. It had some issues before hand.

Now do yourself a favor when you get this card , quit WoW and use it for something far better :p
 
I played one time since I made that thread & I didnt have a good time at all. My friend Traded me a couple of things for my daughters room for the Account so I pretty much gave it away. I am working right now with going back to school to get into Nursing. Im glad I made that thread it has opened my eyes alot from all the comments

While I was playing it that day I looked over at my daughter and realized that the time I spent in the Raid which was about 7 hours I could of spent with her & I felt horrible

Good , sounds like you are on the right track. I had a similar issue with WoW for a while but I woke up from that "trance" and figured out on my own its a giant waste of time not taken in moderation.

Being a dad means that always comes first , I've known to many people that neglected there relationships and children to do things like raid or PVP and it always made me just puzzled. I know kids are stressful and its fine to take a break once in a while but some of the folks I've met on WoW should likely have social services involved.

Now I just blow my time on regular games but at my own pace. Anyway good on you , nice that folks here stepped up to the plate to help you out.
 
No luck with the Re-Bake. The card booted for a few minutes. So I figured I would run Furmark & it did some very odd things. It started at 50c then jumped almost immediately to 98c and just kept rising. the fan had to be at full throttle. It eventually crashed again & didnt boot back up after. Im going to leave the card as it is. Will make a nice wall piece since my walls are bare :)

Next time If I ever do buy a card used im going to make sure I know the person & I know is an standup guy/girl.
 
Still lamenting the removal of my 4870X2s tbh. Is stupid but for cards to serve you so well over 2 years +, is kind of dad to seem the go.
 
I contacted the original seller about the card & started asking questions. He was all cool about it in the beginning when we first made the sale but now he stated the card was in perfect order. I think he new about the problem or problems. He ended up blocking me so that was that. this wasnt on Hardforums so thats a good thing. Live and learn.

I hear you I wish I never bought the 4890 I was on a budget & the deal sounded to good to be true for a pretty decent card. I had a choice at the time 5770 or this card I figured the 5770 would be alittle underpowered but I think in the long run it would of been a better idea to go with the 5770. I could of just crossfired them when I got more funds. I did expect a lay off at all it came way to fast & never even got a notice that it was coming so I made a mistake here & there thinking i was going to be OK but it wasnt.
 
I get what you mean about not buying used, since you don't know what shape the GPU may be in, but what if the seller will help you out with the warranty, or it's an XFX with a transferable warranty? I think the risk is much lower in that case.

EDIT: Also, there will always be dishonest people in the world. I can see some people trying to pass off a bad card as a good one, but not all. I was totally upfront about my 4860's condition when I sold it, though it was in good condition. I even told people that I didn't overclock it because I was a dunce. :p

I absolutely can not STAND sellers who pull that shit. They should be seriously jumped and a few ribs broken. When I sold a couple of pentium 4 northwoods (3.4C's) that had SEVERELY degraded from GNDS, due to 1.675-1.725 vcore, I told them it would run at stock perfectly stable and at most 3.6 ghz. I think I sold the chips for $100 each or something. I wanted the buyers to know EXACTLY what they are buying.

Now, listing overclock degradation is not a requirement and as long as the item is guaranteed to work at stock, does not affect the validity of a sale, but you wind up being known as a trusted seller if you are up front with the buyer.

Sadly, most of the time these days, all you hear is "item is used, pulled from a working system, and was tested before being listed." It's even worse if they say "guaranteed against DOA; returns not accepted unless DOA. Even worse is 3 days to return the product."

If a product were fully working, you should be given at LEAST 15 days....

Now not accepting returns on a new, unopened item is a different story, since they probably expect you to deal with the manufacturer...(but selling a used item as new is fraud and can get you in a LOT of trouble...)
 
The person im getting the 5770 from sent me some pics last night & I literally teared up. No joke I never expected it at all. I decided at tax time to invest in a Crossfire board & im going to snag another 5770 & crossfire them in my Rig. This is one 5770 you will never see on sale at [H]ardForums.

congrats on getting a new card. one thing though, I have never heard of baking an ati card to fix any problems. i know that works with nvidia substrate issues but yours sounds somewhat different.
 
I figured what the hell. It died anyways so baking it couldnt of Hurt any. I baked it 3 times I Hung the card on my wall as a memory of 1 month of kick butt gaming with it :). The card rocked when it was alive. I could almost max out Battlefield BC2 with some really smooth gameplay.

Shouldn't your PC shut down to prevent things reaching that sort of temperature? There must be some setting somewhere to shut it down. 124c is insane.
 
when Tax time comes around I plan on doing alot of things with this PC. Im going to crossfire the 5770's or even go Tri-Fire & new CPU. First thing is first the Person who Donated the card to me is getting a Gift from me & the wife no matter if he likes it or not :)

Anyways What do you guys think Crossfire or Tri-Fire Asus CuCores? Viable for today's games & 1920x1080?
 
Crossfire 5770's would be similar to crossfire 4890's so I think it would be more than enough to game at 1920x1080!

I just read through a few reviews and quickies on the CuCore. It only has one CrossFire connector, but does support voltage modification.

If you have any temperature problems, I suggest lapping the heatsink. Read this review by Zen partway down the page. He said the HSF had a bad finish and the TIM wasn't applied correctly. He got a great reduction in temperatures by lapping it.
 
I plan on going with a x6 core at tax time. Im also going to upgrade my PSU, Mobo & my temps currently on my x3 are 23c @ idle. I did just notice it will only do Crossfire so Thats where im going is Crossfire 5770's

I have one of the 5770 Cucores. It works fine for me (I don't overclock) and the temps have been fine, highest I got was around 77 C with Furmark. In addition to not having Tri-fire it also lacks support for Eyefinity as it only has DVI, HDMI and *VGA*.

But, one should not look a gift horse in the mouth, right ?
