WTH? I get home and boot up my machine like I have been for months since I built it and
there's this crazy pop up box on my desktop that says "I AM SERVICE!!". There's no 'X' button to close it but the box has a number of click buttons on it labeled 'Button 2' thru 'Button 5', No 'Button 6', but a 'Button 7' and two other buttons, one labeled 'Frequency' and the other 'AIgear'. Right clicking on the box does nothing. No options to close or terminate it. None of the buttons appeared to do anything except the one labeled 'Frequency' which displayed a big number that appeared to maybe be my CPU clock followed by about 8 zeroes.
Here's a pic I found of the popup posted by someone else having the same problem:
I then noticed there was a service running called "ASUS ACPI Cneter", and yes, center is spelled wrong!
I never figured out how this thing it starts. It's not in the startup folder. Anyway, ends up it's part of the ASUS PC Probe utility and uninstalling ASUS PC Probe does not make it go away. It runs at bootup (aaCenter.exe) and for some reason (no one seems to know why) it pops up this box more or less randomly. I seem to have gotten rid of it by deleting the ASUS folder it was installed in and then deleting every registry entry that referenced it and wondering if my machine would ever boot again afterwords.
FYI I'm running Vista 64 with an ASUS P5K-DLX MB.
Anyone else seen this?
