I am in ATI driver HELL

So I tried to install the 9.12 drivers and it has totally fucked up my system. About half way through the install my screens went blank and remained that way for a half hour. The hard drive was accessing, but I had no visuals.

I reset my computer, but now I have no Catalyst Control Center, I have tried to install other drivers but that has been a nightmare too. I get half way thru installing and it just sits there forever and ever and ever with the overall progress bar doing nothing and the other bar saying its installing, but nothing happens no matter how long I leave the system.

Basically it will not let me install drivers and it will not let me uninstall what is left on there! I did a complete system restore and it came back on with all three monitors working as one SLS, but it still did not give me any Catalyst Control Center. When I right click the mouse on desktop it shows the CCC but when I click it nothing happens!

I actually had success installing the beta hemlock drivers from AMDs site, but that only let me use one screen and the CCC had very limited features...I mean extremely limited features, as in I did not even have the display tab to adjust my monitors and no overrides tab either.

I am running a sapphire 5970 and I have tried sapphires recommended drivers but those install in 10 seconds and give me no CCC, no nothing!

I am thoroughly fucking pissed here and I need this computer to work right now and its a fucking brick!

I have just tried to use sapphires latest drivers to uninstall CCC from my cpu and it has just sat here the last ten minutes as I type this doing nothing. The overall progress bar is blank and so is the currently uninstalling bar. I got nothing, and whats worse Microsoft will not give me a new code for my vista 64 ultimate because its an OEM version, fucking bastards, otherwise I would do a complete system reinstall.

I cannot believe how bad ATIs drivers are here, this is a nightmare, what can I do? What should I do?

First thing, take a chill pill. Second thing...driver sweeper at guru3d.

Even an OEM system will allow a complete reinstall (but only on the same machine).

OEM code sticker should be with you.

Vista/7, normal install discs will accept OEM codes.

Safe mode > driver cleaner

I would start there. About MS and new code: Did you try calling to get a live person? They're usually lenient with it, I have an OEM version of vista too.
Your problem is rooted in the uninstallation of the old Catalyst Control panel itself. Also look in Driver device manager and manually get rid of anything old there.

I just went 9.11 to 9.12 (sapphire variant) without any issues.

But, I got something similar when I installed some beta in october. What I did was as following:

In device manager, I manually changed the display driver to standard vga. Then I uninstalled everything related to ATI via the ati install manager. After a reboot, I installed whql driver and everything worked perfectly. :)

First I got $3k of work that is due by friday so I cannot chill, I have been trying to get this fixed since last night and I really dont wanna work on my shitty laptop. Thanks for your concern :)

Second, I tried driver sweeper and that cleared everything off, but when I rebooted I got a ton of message boxes saying they could not find this and that file...very annoying

This is what the typical screen does when I try to install or uninstall, it gets to a point like this and just goes no further forever. It has been like this the last ten minutes!

Sounds like you have a corrupt install there. I'd recommend the reformat and reinstall approach.

Oh, and for the future, never bother with OEM drivers - just stick to whatever is on ATI's site. Likewise, avoid beta drivers unless you are willing to deal with a bit of hassle.

It comes up telling me it can get some MOM thing, didnt catch the whole message.

I went into device manager and selected Enable for my 5900 device driver and then rebooted. Now all three screens are working as a SLS again which is good. Also, there is no CCC in the uninstall or change a program section.

So what should be my next step. Should I do driver sweeper, because I have not done driver sweeper since last night and I have attempted to install several drivers since then.

Trust me, I have learned my lesson! What drivers would you recommend for a sapphire 5970 right now?

This is what my system is showing now. There is no mention of ATI installer in the install/uninstall section of control panel. Also, when I right click the desktop it shows the CCC at the top of the list and when I select the CCC it gives me the error message below it. What do you all make of that?

Thanks for all of your help everyone!

I got into this a few times when I had my 4870 X2s.

I feel your pain, really I do.

So......I recommend going into the program files and deleting ATI completely, drivercleaner.net, safe mode, clean them out x 3.
Then try to load official Catalyst drivers: this is the only ATI sanctioned driver:http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/pages/GPU37-driver-for-ati-radeon-hd-5970.aspx

I think you may have gotten a corrupt download of the 9.12s......as far as I know, there are no official versions of Catalyst 9.12.
When mine got FUBAR'd it was a bad download from me searching for better drivers and the symptoms were exactly the same.

As for a reformat......you should be able to reformat your HDD from the OEM copy easily. If activation somehow fails, use the 800 number, it's automated and rarely, I mean rarely kicks you out......when the voice asks you how many computers you have Vista installed on just say none.
If you have to talk to someone in India, all you have to do is tell them your HDD got borked and you need to reformat.....they will give you a key, no problem.

Thanks Magoo!!! Yea I am actually having a seperate issue where it wont get rid of the status window that tells you something is copying, deleting, or moving, even after it has completed that task, and the only way to get rid of the window is to ctl+alt+del and then tell the system to shut down the task....so india dudes are trying to fix that problem rather than give me a new code. I did a completely new reinstall about a month ago when I got my 5870, so now they are being dickish on the codes, but I know I can get em to fork another one over.

After I run driver sweeper this is the message I get when I reboot:

Could not load file or assembly 'MOM.Implementation' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

If you went from Nvidia to ATI I would just forget about it, back up all the files and do a clean reinstall of windows.

I did a completely new install when I went Nvidia to ATI, Backed everything off and reinstalled vista completely. I am trying to avoid having to do that again :(

I have gone back and forth quite a few times and always used driver sweeper...no issues so far.
Good luck

.

I have loaded these drivers and I can now enable all three monitors and set their native resolutions in Windows personalize settings.

However, I still have no CCC!!! This is the message it gives me when I try and load CCC.

Could not load file or assembly 'CLI.Implementation, Version=2.0.3601.39027, Culture=neutral, publickeyToken=90ba9c70f846762e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Any help on this one? Thanks everybody, so far you saved my butt!!!

.net failure. You shouldn't use the driver sweepers. For some it works, for others they have created problems.

Please go into device manager, change gfx drivers to standard vga. - To avoid that system autoinstall drivers upon restart
Uninstall everything ati releated via the ATI unistall manager. - To cllense the system of corrupt driver installs.
Restart and install catalyst again (don't forget to install it as administrator/run as admin, otherwise you can get stuck like last time during install). - It should tell you this in release notes of the driver.
Make sure it installs the MS c++ redist (by selecting custom install). - Driver sweeper might have removed something there

IT IS A FIXED NOW!!! You guys are all literally my freaking heros!!!! I tired everything recommended and this ^^^^^^^ above is primarily what helped me out! Wow, you guys ended allot of aggrivation!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

All in favor of installing driver sweeper. Rebooting to safe mode. Running driver sweeper to remove all ATI files. Rebooting then installing latest official Catalyst. (9.12 by 12/17/09 supposedly) say Yea.

I cringe at the thought of going thru this again so soon, but I MUST lol!

Might I also suggest you stop rebooting your computer while drivers are installing? I've had drivers take a *long* time to install before - don't be impatient, you'll just b0rk your box.

On Vista there's no way to stop the auto install on startup. The Device manager way is usually the culprit. The generic vga works every time.

where can i download the 9.12 drivers eager to see if my 4870 gets any performance boosts

Official 9.12's are yet to show up on AMD's site... I'd wait until they do before attempting another update. Should be available tomorrow (17th)

driver sweeper never created problems for me but then I never had ATI videcards before (well, not never but not since 9800 :) )

I use it with ATI cards and no problems at all. Have used it with XP and W7. No experience with Vista.

I'm in.

Aren't driver cleaners unnecessary with windows 7?

I've heard that the new OS are quite tolerant of driver changes, but my thought is, what the hell.
It takes a couple of minutes, can't hurt, so why not be safe.

I think the OPs main problem here is that his 9.12s are not the final version......and therein lies the problem. I've had the identical problems in the past. There seem to be alot of beta versions floating around that are a total crap shoot when it comes to installing.

Completely unnecessary with WDDM 1.0/1.1. MS designed the new WDDM with that in mind. They wanted it to be easier for users to update drivers.

I haven't bothered with a driver cleaning program since Windows XP. Now I just install right on top of the old drivers per AMD's recommendation and have never had an issue. Will upgrade to Catalyst 9.12 today (if they are released like Terry Makedon said they would be) using the same method as well.

WDDM 1.0/1.1 makes things so much easier with video driver installation due to the way it handles the driver installation and removal. No more reboots no nothing. Love it. :)

Interesting to know.
Thanks.

ATI wouldn't of delayed the driver release just for fun, so perhaps there is an issue.

or............the guy who tweeted (is that even a word????) was wrong about the whole thing.

Often leaked drivers leave out some file or another, or only work for certain card types and not others.

I'd like to know how these leaked drivers make it to the "wild" in the first place.

Installing video card drivers is very simple but some tend to make a big deal out of it. If you get in trouble don't freak out! getting frustrated only makes the problem worse. Just backtrack and you'll usually find where you messed up.

Just uninstall your old ones. Reboot. Install your new ones. I usually delete the old folders before installing the new ones though.
