Shipping immediately, HyperX Predator PCIe SSD is the highest-end SSD with the fastest speeds in the HyperX lineup. HyperX Predator PCIe SSD offers large capacities (240GB, 480GB) and incredible speeds to take systems to the edge. Faster than SATA-based SSDs, the PCIe generation 2.0 x4 interface delivers speeds up to 1400MB/s read and 1000MB/s write for ultra-responsive multitasking and an overall faster system. It is powered by the Marvell 88SS9293 controller. The M.2 form factor ensures next-generation platform support with an M.2 PCIe slot. An optional half-height, half-length (HHHL) adapter is also available for many existing motherboards without an M.2 socket. The HHHL adapter comes with both standard and low-profile brackets to fit in slim profile desktop builds.
 
Great! More m.2 PCIe drives can't come fast enough!

Just got mine, supplied as an M.2 card on a PCIe riser. Shown with another M.2 drive for comparison:

The length is the same (80mm), I think the HyperX Predator being seated in the connector makes it look a bit shorter + the crappy cell phone photography. Note, however, the different keying on the M.2 connectors- the HyperX Predator is PCIe, while the other drive shown is SATA.

They are probably going to change the nand chips after reviews again, with some of "equivalent performance according to internal test".

You both raise fair points. In Kingston's defense, the drives in which component substitutions were made were positioned on the budget side, and I can't see them making a credible play at the enthusiast market if they're planning on doing something similar with a drive like the HyperX Predator.

In the interest of fairness, I've relayed these concerns to Kingston's PR team, and given them the opportunity to offer a response or assurance before I review the drive.

Supply chains are complicated animals, and substitutions happen. For an inexpensive, mainstream drive that you can buy at Staples, like the V300, it's not too surprising. I bought my laptop, an Asus UX31A, a few years ago based on strong reviews and generally liking the device. During that model's run, there was a switch in SSD manufacturers, with the later revision being much faster than the initial one. Fortunately, I ended up with the better SSD- but that's just one example of a pretty common practice in technology.

I would be upset if I bought one of the affected Kingston drives expecting one thing and getting another, but let's hope that they've learned from the controversy and know that when you're selling $800 performance SSDs, there is a different standard expected. I'll keep you posted.
 
Completely fair response to that, i always trusted Kingston when it came to memory.
 
Well, I asked specifically about whether there would be transparent communication of any changes to the NAND or controller on the HyperX Predator in the future. They did not have any comment on NAND, but said that the controller will continue to be Marvell.

What's somewhat disappointing to me personally is that when asked directly, there was no commitment to transparently communicate any material changes to the BOM or other revisions.

NAND chips on the 480gb HyperX Predator that I have are from Toshiba, for what it's worth.
 
1GB/s write time, now we're getting somewhere. excuse my ignorance regarding this storage type, but can you RAID these for even more performance?

You can, using software RAID (Dynamic Volume in Windows) in your OS.
 
ive had a handful of micron ones that I was going to use as caching devices in conjunction with my emc storage, but the cards do no support oracle uek at this time. bummer.

excited to see these hitting the consumer market now.
 
Why are people whining about PCIE 2.0? Do you not realize each lane still supports 500MB/s, more than any of these chips can handle?

A 4x 2.0 link is more than sufficient for any of these ICs, 8x or 16x would likely be enough for years to come.

For this, sure. But with 2.0 vs. 3.0, you're giving up precious lanes to get the same performance.

Once consumer NVMe drives start hitting.. well, there's stuff out now on the enterprise side that needs more than PCIe 2.0 x4, and we can expect similar speeds in the consumer segment.
