Hyper 212+ high temps.

I just recently installed a 212+ on my e8400 @ 3.8 with 1.27 volts (as displayed by CPUZ) I'm curious as to why the idle temps are higher than the stock cooler. I'm seeing about 49-51C idle temps, 68C running prime95.
Granted it still beats the stock cooler. I've had it installed for about 2 weeks. I have tried reseating it, using different methods of applying thermal compound, and I switched the stock cooler back on just to compare.
The stock cooler is showing about 46c idle.
I've tried removing the side and blowing a desk fan directly on it, temps cap about 63C but idle is the same.
I've tried Arctic Silver, Antec 77064, and the generic compound that came with the cooler. Still the temps remain around 50C.
Now at stock clock and voltage I get idle temps of about 36-37C, which still seems high.

Is there something I'm overlooking?

How are you reading the temps?

Do you have the qfan or motherboard controlled fan speed on?

Does your case have good airflow?

Is it hot in your room?
 
My 212+ isn't that great either. A Q6600 at 3ghz is hitting 60c on one of the cores. I have two fans on there though. It seems to respond nicely to fan speed, so if you can make your motherboard force 100% fan speed, I think you'll see better temps at that point.
 
ya i'm not too worried about the temps, they just aren't nearly as good as a TRUE
 
Ok little update, I got home from work, and I set the fan controller to disable (max speed) I checked my OC setting and it seems that I am running 4.0ghz @ 1.36v. After 15 min idle with max fan speed I was at 45c.
I ran prime95 for about 40min and it reached 68c.

I suppose that running at 4.0 clock the temps are pretty decent. I must have forgot that I went higher with the clock.
The slow fan speed was allowing my idle temps to go stay so high. I never considered that.

BTW I'm using Gigabyte ep35 ds4 board.
Pretty old stuff, but I'm holding out on upgrading until the end of the year. Still serves me well with the OC
 
212 is decent (tho i've never tried one) i know my Core contact freezers and xigimatic 4 heatpipe DTH are pretty good and dont let my cpu go over 55C with a q6600 @ 3.6ghz, i guess case might help with decent airflow. You check the paste on the bottom when you take it off and make sure its got it covered? and you used the heatpipe paste method? ((spreading it in the gaps of heatpipes) (tho when you keep applying it i bet it solves it)
 
Don't expect ice cold temps out of a hyper 212.
The heat increase is to be expected when you are overvolting and overclocking your cpu.
If you want lower temps on air cooling, I'd say go with a Megahalems if your case/motherboard can fit it.
