I plan to eventually have a 4.0Ghz i7 920 (D0) at 1.30-1.36vcore (NH-U12P with push/pull configuration), 2 SATA HDDs,and 2 4870's in crossfire. There's probably going to be a total of 5 120MM fans in the system.

know there are endless questions about this but the Corsair PSU configurator tells me I need at least the 750TX. This system shouldn't use more than about 500-520W at peak. I'm fine, right?

I'm hoping that the 4870's come with molex to PCIE power adapters since my psu only has the pair of 6 pin connectors.
 
I calculate about 600W peak DC load. I wouldn't run that system off of an HX620.
 
Depends on the core voltage required, I have a processor that does 4.2 at 1.36 so I'm assuming I can back down on it for 4.0 (air vs water).

I'm sure I can back down on the CPU overclock and still perform quite well in games. I may not even need a second 4870 in my system.
 
I was estimating based on a final voltage of 1.36V. With a single 4870 you'd be fine, but I wouldn't run that system on an HX620 with two of them.
 
So it wouldn't be safe to run a system at max power for a 2 hour gaming session maybe once or twice a week?

It would be safe depending on the quality of the PSU. For your planned setup, one HD4870 is just fine. For two HD4870, get a bigger PSU. It would decrease the longevity of that 620HX PSU if you were to go with a HD4870 CF setup. Even for a short period of time.
 
FWIW, it appears that I can get to 4.0 at 1.25v. Still loading at slightly above 70, so a remount of the noctua might be in order. Not at all sure if I applied the X23-7783d correctly. :D
