I just did an upgrade yesterday, and went from core2 quad to an i7, plus an ssd. I did not even take my psu out of my case. I did use a can of compressed air to blow some dust off that had collected on the back grill of it, but that is it. Now it is making occasional squeaky noises, but most of the time no noise. It also sometimes makes noises somewhat similar to an old hard drive. It is not very loud, but sort of annoying when i have the case door off. Do you guys think it is just the fan? I am really not keen on taking my pc back apart.

Most likely when you blew the canned air into your supply some dust/gunk got into the ball bearings of the fan. This will slowly start burning it out. Is it still under warranty?

It has to be, we've only been selling PSUs for 3 years and they have 5 year warranties! hahaha..

Seriously though, it is a possibility that the fan is dying out. If you stop the fan and the noises go away, that'll let you know. Either way, we'll be happy to RMA it for you.

Is it a squeaking sound or a high-pitched whine? If it's just squeaking, chances are that it's a fan issue, in which case it'll either get better after a while or it'll start getting worse which will mean that you'll have to RMA it.

it is squeaking and making some other weird noises. I would rather avoid an rma if i can fix it myself. I am a grad student and can't go any time without a computer.

Trouble is you void the warranty if you go in it to try to oil or replace the fan.

In that case, I would suggest that you see if you can get Corsair to send out an advance replacement so that you won't be without a PSU. I'm not sure if they typically do that, but some companies will put a charge on your credit card equal to the value of the PSU, and then cancel it once they receive the unit that is being RMA'd.
