Howdy all.

Got ESXi installed and working well except one exception.

I have a Highpoint RocketRAID 2220 controller running 3 x 750gb drives in RAID5 which does not show up in ESX or in my test VM. THe controller shows up in my test VMs device manager but the array doesnt. What are my options?

If I install the RAID driver during the windows install will the array show up in the VM and will it clear my array? as it has data on it..

Do I have to buy a new compatible controller?
 
The HP is not listed as a supported controller - the Device you see in the VM isn't the actually the highpoint controller, but our emulated controller.

If it's not showing up in ESX in the ViC, then it probably won't work. I'd get a supported controller (PERC/LSi/Adaptec) and go with that :)
 
Try Hyper-V form Microsoft. Google Hyper-V iso. Its the first link.

Any cheap controller cards anyone can recommend?

Also would I better off goign non RAID perhaps? ( :( )

definitely go raid.

find a used PERC card on ebay :) Make sure it has the battery backed cache.

I have had a look at these but none of them display how many drives they hold (looking for 8 port) and are most SAS, can I use SATA drives on SAS connections?

You can use SAS to SATA adapters IIRC.

Just noticed that Perc 5/i is on the list of supported hardware. My pre-written speel:
If you don't mind buying used hardware with little or no warranty, you could buy a Dell Perc 5/i card off eBay for ~$100 or so plus two of these SFF-8484 to 4 x SATA Cables for ~$25. Thus, you get 8 ports and a true hardware RAID controller for around ~$125 or so. Add a battery backup unit for ~$40 and you're set in case of power outages. Not a bad deal considering that a new true PCI-E hardware RAID controller is around $300 (Areca ARC-1210) for 4 ports.

EDIT: As of May 2009, it seems that you can find many Perc 5/i cards with the BBU and PCI bracket for $120 and under. Excellent price!

But those Dell Perc 5/i cards are finicky about motherboards. It will take up PCI-E x16 slot if you don't have a PCI-E x8 slot.

The battery backup is also for speed - we' cut the queue and performance suffers without it :)

It's a solid piece of hardware. Go for it!

No problem - it's a common issue, actually. Battery dies, performance tanks since the driver for it will slow things down for reliability.
 
way to resurrect a year old thread, but yes the dell perc 5 and 6 work fine with esx
