HW upgrades!

So I finally got this motherboard ordered and the UPS guy just dropped it off at my doorstep.

Then as I'm looking at it, I have a realization. OEM copy of Windows 7 64bit.

IIRC, those are "one install only" copies. So... will I be able to switch out this motherboard and reactivate the license without any fuss or will I have to call Microsoft or go out and pick up yet another version of Windows 7 retail....?

Before I spend some time switching motherboards, I'd like a clear answer on what I'll need to do if I need to do anything.
 
I don't know what the legalities are, but you should be able to activate it with no fuss. Worst case it's a quick call to Microsoft.

I can vouch for this. On my OEM version of Vista, I had to call Microsoft to re-activate after some hardware changes and they were OK with it as long as it's only installed on one PC. I would imagine it's the same for Windows 7.
 
I am on my phone, typing this. Give ya an idea how great the change went?

Everything seems to boot fine but no post. No screen display at all. And the MemOK light is solid red no matter what I do. Every single stick of RAM I have is apparently incompatible with this motherboard. Pushin, the friggan button doesnt do anything either.

I have checked and rechecked all of the power connections and made sure the ram was seated correctly.

I am so frustrated with everything at this point
 
Reset CMOS?
Try building the PC outside of the case?
 
Moved the rtc jumper and no change.

Building the computer outside the case will have to wait for tomorrow.
 
Rechecked the cpu and one pin broke off after I unmounted it.
That enough to screw the entire cpu?

Well on the positive side I was at least able to post and get into the bios.
But blue screens after that.

Anyway... looks like new cpu time. Awesome.

Im gonna run to town tomorrow after work and just buy a new cpu. The same or close to what I have now hopefully.
 
So no shop here in town has a processor in stock. So since Ill have to wait until Thursday possibly Friday to get my computer running again I may as well order one and overnight it.

So please if you could suggest a decent upgrade to the cpu I have?

Unfortunately AMD's new CPUs aren't that much better than your current CPU when it comes to gaming performance. At least, not much better to justify the costs.

If you're fine with your current CPU performance, just get the Phenom II 965:

If you want to try out the new AMD CPUs anyway for shits and giggles, from what I can tell, the $190 FX-8150 is the only FX CPU to actually edge out your current CPU:

Ill most likely go with the 965 but Ill check out the FX one later this evening.

Girlfriends getting mad Im posting here instead of paying attention to her stories.
 
Alright, so I wanted to update you guys on everything so far.

I ended up finding a store with a 965 so I picked it up. Was an extra 50 bucks from whats online but at the time didn't care.

Came home plugged it in without an issue and guess what, friggan blue screen. So wtf..

After some sifting through the BIOS and flipping through the MB manual I came across the AHCI stuff. My bios was set to AHCI but thats not how I had it configured when I installed the OS. Set it back to IDE and boom... boot to windows perfect. Reinstalled all the drivers and reboot and I'm all good and running.

Except now, I have a 955 that I'm fairly confident actually friggan works. But at this point, I'm not going to find out for sure.

So long story short / tldr; could have saved myself a lot of frustration had I just sat down and looked through the manual to begin with.
