Wow, I'm so ridiculously excited right now.....you have no idea.

Alright, let me stop for a minute and catch my breath.......whew......there we go.

Originally I was looking at building a VERY nice water cooling setup for the next LAN I'm going to in January and getting a 3.2C to "play with" with hopes of hitting 4GHz. After tax and shipping the entire setup was going to cost me about $340...not bad actually. Then I started thinking of adding DangerDen's 6800 water block for my video card, which is selling for $125 USD as we speak.....which would have brought my end total over $500 CDN.

I was back surfing [H]ardForums again, when I came across an interesting thread. I'll make a long story short here.....I have just finalised the last few things with one of the people in that thread, and I'm going to be buying his Prometia Mach1 vapor cooler!!! In case you didn't see from that little pic in the middle of the page, the Prometia simply sits underneath my case, and the insulated hose comes up through the bottom of the case. It would have actually been enough to stop there, but I'm also going to be selling my 2.8C Pentium4 to buy a 3.2C before the LAN. To go along with the new CPU I'm going to be picking up some OCZ PC4400 memory to replace my PC4000, the PC4400 is designed to run at 275fsb 1:1 right out of the box.....and here's the reason why. With the right stepping (I'm buying my 3.2C used) I've seen a good number of 3.2C's hit over 4GHz with decent water cooling. With my -40C temps I'm going to be shooting for an FSB of 275 with the new setup. This will not only get my ram running at its stock speed, but I'll also be sitting with a 4.4GHz processor!!! :D

I've actually seen 4.4GHz done on water/peltier setups.....so I'm quite confident that as long as I can find a 3.2C with the right stepping I'll be in good shape.

So yeah, that all happened today, what a nice turn of events huh? :p

I'll have the last half of the cash to give the guy with my second cheque of the month on the 15th.....so I'll have the Prometia by the end of next month. :D

I'm actually still considering building my water cooling setup and JUST putting the 6800GT on it.....which would be really nice indeed. I'll have to see how funds are gonna work out for the water cooling in addition to the Prometia.....but considering the water cooling was gonna cost me as much as this Prometia anyways I figure it's the best way to go. :p

It's sure a good thing that I'm still doing some other mods to my computer and getting some heavy duty steel case handles for my case.....cus the Prometia itself weighs in at just over 40 pounds.....which will make my case a good 60+ pounds by the LAN. Looks like I won't have anyone run off with it eh? :wink:

If anyone has comments or questions.....or notice about a 3.2C D1 they'll be selling, feel free to let me know. ;)
 
If you need anything from the states LMK I can ship ram 4-7 day to canada for less than 3 bux, and same goes for CPUs. I shipped 2mobos, cpus and a heatsink to canada 4-7day for 18 dollars. More or less "gifts" means no taxes.
 
jmattick, I'm not going LGF775 quite yet.....but I'll definitely be considering it in the future. Depending on how A64's PCI-E turns out I might swing that way.....but that's still to far ahead to say.

I'm going to be picking up that 3.2C and OCZ PC4400 before December and it's almost ALWAYS cheaper to go through Newegg for me if I can get someone else to ship it for me.....'cus the tards don't ship to Canada. :( I'll probly be calling on you in the next 2-3 months.

Sub zero cooling is interesting, but for myself ive reached the point of my cost/performance ratio. I cant justify spending hundreds more on an extra few frames a second or losing 2 secs off load times. Theres a fine line between being [H] and [H][H][h] :D :p
 
Congrats to you. Those Prometias are the hit!

Make sure you post all about the 4.4! Lotsa pics always helps too.

Aint it great living in Canada with all the crap of getting stuff? My company has a warehouse in Wa. state and its still a hassle getting stuff in.

I know its not the greatest idea to get your hopes up about overclocking.....but think about it realistically here. I'm going to be making sure I pick up a good stepping on the 3.2C.....and any of the half decent SL6 D1 stepping 3.2C's I've seen have cleared 4GHz on nice water setups no problem. I'm not meaning to talk down to you, but a lot of people do underestimate the capabilities of a Prometia as opposed to a high end water cooling setup when it comes to overclocking.

I still have every confidence that with a nice stepping on the CPU I'll be able to push 275fsb, but again.....we'll have to wait and see.

EDIT: I hadn't actually read through the entire thread yet......so I stopped in to say thx to all those who have wished me luck.....anything over 4GHz is gonna be nice as hell.....but with this thing re-gassed I'm still looking to settle somewhere between 4.2 and 4.4. Hell, considering with decent water cooling and high end air cooling a lot of folks hit 3.7GHz or so with their 3.2C D1's I'm still fairly pumped. :D

I'll keep you posted.

Yeah as much as it's getting hyped up the wazoo and as much as people talk of "future proofing" themselves... I still see no reason to go with a PCI-e LGA-based setup just yet. It just adds to the cost and offers nothing in the way of improved performance.

In my experience I almost always replace mobo/cpu simultaneously and all my past attempts at "future proofing" haven't really panned out (if you're the sort that buys components often enough for future proofing to matter you probably have the cash to throw around anyway :p ).

Only cool thing I've seen out of the new chispsets is the NCQ HDD controllers but again the difference was pretty miniscule (and you'd pay a premium for the NCQ HDD as well). Where are thee SLI?? Good luck on yer road to 4GHz by the way! :D
 
hhhmmmmm.. it would seem to me that with a prometia setup and a goal of super high p4 clocks.. wouldnt it be a wiser move to go with prescott? they are made to be able to scale higher, and with that cooling setup, heat will not be an issue

That is something to actually consider.....as the scaling should be that much nicer.....and you're right.....I won't have to be worrying about dissipating all that heat with a regular old HSF either. :p Thx for putting my mind back "on track" with this.....I might just go that route.

What about the 2.8Ghz with a 533Mhz FSB? That'll give you some good head room with the high multiplier.

Exactly, because the 2.8GHz 533fsb P4 runs on a multiplier of 21.....and 21x275 is a 5.78GHz CPU clock.....and why in Gods name would I aim for that?

WOW :eek: has that even been acheived by those people who spend all their time trying to find the best overclocker in the world and then putting in on liquid nitrogen? lol
 
Corn: Best of luck with this, and please DO keep us posted. What was the total cost of the Prometia? Did you say you had to get it recharged as well? Post some $ numbers, if you would. I am building a whipass system in 2-3 months, and want to keep all options open! Thanks!
 
You know why I spend so much time at xtremesystems.....to see crazy shit like this first hand.......which is just effin nuts. :cool:

The Prommy is costing me a total $480 Canadian, and i still have to call around to see what it's gonna cost to get it recharged....but I'll let you guys know what I find out.

It looks like I also might have to end up paying in full to have my case powder coated...as the guy I was gonna get hooked up with for the free job hasn't been around much. I have settles on the 3.2E and no water cooling for the video card, that will leave the extra cash open to spend on the powder coating and a few other little things.

I've got a nice digicam a friend has lined up to take pics when it's all said and done...and maybe some "in progress shots" but I might just start up a seperate thread for it once things start getting done.
