So I have a monster HTPC in my living room. Id like to build a HTPC for my bedroom (I have a small 20" 720p TV in there... no HDMI but it has component inputs and i have DVI -> Components adapters and HDMI -> Component Adapters)... sooo thought about using an atom chip... im getting a small HD because im streaming all my stuff from my main HTPC... whatcha think.... im gonna be running Windows 7

Case: Rosewill RS-MI-01 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147131) - $39.99

Mobo/CPU: ZOTAC IONITX-D-E Intel Atom N330 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500030) - $169.99

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148211) - $38.99

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD800AAJS 80GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136195) - $34.99

Rather go with a green drive, but they are not on sale right now.

This is not for gaming, simply for streaming movies off my main HTPC and playing them in my bedroom on the smaller screen (most of my movies are 1080p mkv files)

Total is $293.32 shipped.

does it have to be mini itx? you could save a few bucks and go micro atx. the m3n78-em was just on sale at frys for 50 bucks. snag a low power x2 to go with it, and you would have a nice rig.

I'd like it to be mini tx... i placed the order. The atom board got great reviews apparantly for HTPC's, people even said it did great at blu-ray playback, which im not doing but if it can handle that, it'll handle playing mkv files.

I plan on using an XBox as an extender for my main HTPC. Have you thought about it? $200, or probably much cheaper with some of the holiday deals coming up.

that is impressive, let us know if it works out well in playing higher quality vids.

not aware of any atom that can play bluerays... it must be gfx card supported (CUDA or DXVA) which that motherboard is. just dont expect to stream hq videos over the internet...

how about this combo 274864 on newegg for $357.95 :
ZOTAC IONITX-D-E Mini ITX mother Board + Intel Atom N330 Dual Core 1.6 GHz 441 with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Onboard GPU
APEX MI-008 Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case w/ 250W Power Supply
Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900RPM/32MB Sata Internal Hard Drive
Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Dual Channel Memory
LITE-ON iHAS-324-98 24X DVD-Burner

Sounds like what im building actually, sept less memory and smaller HD (since im streaming locally).

I dont plan to playback blu-ray or stream hq over the internet... and yes the graphics card is where its getting its power from, using CUDA (it supports it)

I believe Linux is the only OS that supports GPU acceleration.

Asus seems like a nice board, but i don't want micro atx, i want as low a foot print as possible and as quiet as possible

I'll add to the snide comments - what the heck?

You will need to make sure that whatever player you use to playback those MKV files supports hardware acceleration via DXVA though.
