I have 2 HTPCs running AMD 2400g CPUs. All I do with these boxes is stream, surf, watch DVDs. Key point is zero gaming.

With Windows 10 EoL in the near future, I was thinking of installing Linux on these boxes. They're still perfectly capable for what I need them for, and I don't feel like rebuilding/creating ewaste for no reason.

Anything I need to be aware of as I undertake the endeavor? Your advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Should be straight forward. If you're new to linux it might feel like a lot but the juice is worth the squeeze. Just ask questions and AI can answer a lot of those questions.

Thanks. I used to do Linux all the time as part of my job and I've done Raspberry Pis as well. I can probably get up and going without too much trouble. My only worry was a real 'gotcha' (something like 'you can't stream Amazon Prime under Linux' - not that it's true but you get the idea). Based on my research I think everything should be good. Appreciate the advice.

There should be no issue with what you want to do. I've been doing that and more for years. I won't say every single obscure streaming service will 100% work but any major one should be fine.

Do you use more than stereo sound?

That can get iffy if you want to have multiple programs open (even if paused) all playing 5.1 or something.

FWIW I decided to get a lowest end Mac mini for my HTPC. No problems with surround sound through a receiver.

From what I remember, netflix and amazon both restrict their video streaming resolutions to 720p for linux systems.

Something to do with the traditional drm-control-freakery such companies like to implement.

How do you set up a Mac mini as an HTPC? Does it work with the Apple TV remote?

Yes, and the Mac only does 1080p. No 4k for you.

Linux and Kodi = Win. You can even use your Droid phone as the official remote.
