This might seem like a silly question, but for those of you who game on you HTPC, how do you do it? I'm looking at my couch and thinking "how can i use a keyboard and mouse here?" It's not like i can drag a desk and chair in front of the tv.

I use my coffee table. Sometimes this gets to my back though, because coffee tables aren't very high. If the girlfriend is already asleep, or not home, I'll stack up a few hardbacks and put the keyboard on one stack and the mousepad on the other. Works pretty well. Alternatively, I sit on the floor and use the ottoman as a table.

A snack tray sounds like a good solution, if you can find a stable one that's wide enough for both keyboard and mouse. They stow away pretty well.

I understand I don't have a conventional living room anymore.. but who cares :p

I placed a desk behind my couch.

Eventually I'll probabaly get a Stressless reclining couch'ish thing with a computer tray so I can just use my couch. I guess.. this probably isn't helpful.. I just gave up on the whole living room concept.. I have speaker wire and computer crap running all over the place :) But that's what home is to me ;)

Edit: Ah, my pretty picture with my pipes didn't work, sorry.. it's all centered in the room.

Haha My living room is too small to put a desk behind my couch, unfortunately. That would be cool though. I'll have to try and find a good snack or lap board i guess

I do the coffe table routine, but really need to replace it with a low table and chair. My legs goto sleep from kneeling (ouch!ouch!ouch!) and then I cant stand up for awhile :(

wireless keyboard/mouse is pretty much your only good option with HTPC. get something good - with high resolution and response rate, to decrease lag.

I sit on my couch with my keyboard in my lap.
On my right I put down an 14"x24" cardboard mat, and I use that as the mousing surface fro my wireless mouse.

Yea KB in the lap, and mouse on the couch cushion on the right. Sometimes mouse pad on the cushion as well. I guess this depends on what your couch is made of.

I play with the keyboard on my lap and mouse either on the couch cushion or armrest using one of these:

Allsop Steel-Backed Mousepad

Saw it at the compusa one day and bought it immediately. It's nice and sturdy and flat no matter what you rest it on.

I use a Microsoft Bluetooth Elite Keyboard and Mouse. The only problem I've experienced is that I have to plug the bluetooth transmitter into the front usb of my htpc case in order to get a good response time from the k/b and mouse. there's some interference when the transmitter is in the back of the case near all the tv/sound/etc wiring and 802.11 antenna. If anyone knows a workaround for this (changing frequencies or something) let me know. I have a case with the front usb behind a panel, and I have to keep the panel open in order to have the k/b and mouse work well. It's somewhat unsightly.

I'd say make one... or sell the idea to a company... could make a good fortune as im sure everyone and their dog that has an htpc system and that is using their lap / books / coffe table, isn't getting what they want.
