HTPC cpu usage too high

I have an AMD X2 5000+, 2gigs ram, evga 8800gt 512. Anytime I run a 1080p mkv, my cpu usage spikes to 90/100 percent. On my other computer e6600, 4gigs ram, 8800gts 640 I'm running 60-80 percent. This seems way too high for these setups. I'm using MediaPlayerClassic and XBMC and getting similar results. Any ideas how to lower these numbers or are these normal?
 
Sounds like your player/codec isn't offloading the video decompression to the video card. Make sure you've got the same codec and configuration on the machine with high CPU utilitzation.
 
Does the other machine seem like it's numbers are inline? Even 60-80 percent seems high. The 8800's do offload decoding don't they?
 
The CPU usage is high because the original 8800gts 640mb does not support DXVA acceleration. The 8800gt 512 should be able to do it. Setup Media Player Classic - Home Cinema with this tutorial.
 
Alright, that's liveable. Does the 8800gt allow for acceleration? I'm more concerned about the 100 percent spikes causing judder on my main HTPC than the 60 percent with no issues on my main rig.
 
I guess that makes sense why the codec settings that I was testing on my main machine had no affect on CPU usage. I need to go through the list on the HTPC and see if it drops since the 8800gt should allow for offloading.

Yes the 8800GT does support hardware acceleration of HD content as long as you setup the software/codec/media playback correctly. My 8800GT offloads the decoding of HD content just fine.
