First and foremost I want to truly thank everyone who posts here for sharing so much knowledge and information. As someone who has very limited knowledge base of computer hardware, this forum has been invaluable to me over the past several days of trying to learn and take in as much information in as possible.
Having said that, I am going to try and build my own HTPC, something I have never done before. Assuming I can do this, I am going to be relying on the recommendations of anyone who would like to help me. I have gained so much knowledge and done so much research, but at the end of the day I would prefer to defer to the experts (especially when it comes to everything fitting into a case and making sure all parts are compatible - that scares me).
I have answered the questions below and hope I have provided enough information. Thank you all again and I look forward to any responses.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Watching movies stored on internal hard drive (DVD Rips, 720p & 1080p files made from original Blu-Ray discs), playing original Blu-Ray discs, Netflix, Hulu Plus, XBMC, Web Browsing, recording OTA HD Broadcast channels (if overall cost is too much this can wait for a few months until I get more money).
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
<=$400 USD before taxes and shipping
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
US, Danbury, CT
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Case, PSU, Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Network Card (I Assume I will need this?), remote control. I do not have a preference between amd or intel
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
SAMSUNG USB 2.0 External Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer Model SE-506AB/TSBD I would like to use this until I get more money to but an internal drive.
Samsung Spinpoint F4EG 2 TB SATA2 5400rpm 32 MB Hard Drive HD204UI/Z4 In an ideal world I wouldn't have both the operating system and my media on this drive, but I don't think I can afford a SSD at this point. If there is room in my budget to do so, I would love to.
6) Will you be overclocking?
No
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
TV - 60 Inch Sharp - 1080p
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within the next month (The sooner the better)
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
Im not 100% sure. Definitely HDMI. An optical out would be great so I can plug it directly into my receiver, but that is not 100% necessary.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Yes. Windows 7 Ultimate; 64bit
