In terms of htpc's today, should I go for the dual core or the quad core? PSU is 420w Corsair, I know dual core is less heat, but would it be enough to power the htpc? Right now at newegg it looks to be $54.99 for 3.4ghz dual core, $59.99 for triple core, and $79.99 for the quad.

Well what exactly are you planning to do with this HTPC? Remember that people do a variety of different things with their HTPC and that does change what CPU they should get.

Also, there's no such thing as a Corsair 420W. Did you mean the Corsair CX430 430W? In addition, what motherboard and video card are you planning on using for socket AM3 CPUs?

Yeah, sorry it has the 430w, just looked it up. It's just going to be a basic htpc, possibly blu-ray play back in the future. It's a cheap ECS brand motherboard, and I have the geforce 210

edit: ECS board is A960M-M3, I also have ASUS M5A97LE handy but was going to use that for a better build down the line

In that case, the cheapest dual-core AM3 CPU you can find would work. However I would replace the video card as that video card isn't suitable for blu-ray playback IIRC. Go for the HD 6450 at a minimum or the HD 6570.

Alright, I assume it's worth the ~$2 to go from the 3.2ghz to the 3.4ghz?

I'm sure I won't start with blu-ray stuff right away, though, since it's just a small budget build (literally budget) since I don't have a blu-ray drive yet.
