HTC One (M9)

So the next big Android releases will be the LG G4 in April / May ? And the OnePlus Two in May / June.

IMO the S6 and M9 not really making rush out to the store and scratch that upgrade itch, they both just seem ok, but not giving me that must have right now feeling.

Three years without a design refresh is way too long. Can HTC no longer afford a designer? At least change to the Surface Pro 3 style speakers to clean up the front and make sure the parts line up since there's probably still a customer base for stereo speakers.

You must be hating Samsung then. Their R&D is essentially Apple, and with terrible software developer making the system.

The HTC M7 still looks better than anything that Samsung offer so far, even their new S6/Edge(iPhone 6 wannabe)

s6 edge looks better than anything out there in my eyes
regular s6 looks bad on the other hand

regular s6 looks really bad compared to edge

Nothing looks like it plus the screen edges have useful practicality for notification unlike something like the LG Flex which does look like a bent iPhone. I think that's what he's trying to say. :D

I'll probably be picking one of these up when they come out. Mainly because my oldest kid needs a new phone, and I'm not giving him a newer phone than mine (because I'm like that). :D The M8 is still a very solid phone and will be for a few more years, and since I already enjoy the style and use it more for music than anything else, the M9 makes sense for me. I haven't heard a better phone while wearing headphones, HTC knows that the sound is one of their biggest items, so they're not going to mess that up.

To be honest, I am still very satisfied with my Jailbreak iPhone 6 Plus, and I am a big Android Nerd too. I am totally open and looking to going back to Android, but looking for something really amazing to blow me away and take me away from this JB 6 Plus. And so far this S6 and M9 don't do it. But the M9 could possibly, once I see battery life results.

But right now this iPhone 6 Plus gives me the best battery life out of any smartphone I've ever owned, better than my old Note 2 which was ROM's and tweaked for battery life, better than my tweaked and kernel OnePlus One, and way better than my Nexus 6, and also much better than my old One M8 too.

And with all these Jailbreak tweaks, my 6 Plus operates very similar to a Android phone.

Let's see what LG brings out with the G4, and see what OPO does with their second phone this Spring ?

I'm glad that OnePlus hired the Paranoid squad to do the phone; Cyanogen and their backstabbing greedy ways is partially the reason I stopped installing custom roms.

Agreed. I think a OnePlus Two, running a Paranoid Android OS, specifically built for that phone, could be amazing.

I would expect OPO to start talking about the next phone in April or so, with a reveal in May or June ?

I feel sorry HTC, they didn't go for a home run on the M9, they just went for a single, thinking that'd be enough.

This year the top smartphones will be the iPhone 6S with the off the charts amazing new camera they've been working on for two years. Plus a major hardware update as well in the new S line.

Also I think LG will come out with an amazing new phone in the G4.

And the OnePlus Two will surprise people. Very high quality build materials with top hardware specs, running a close to stock vanilla Android OS, all for around $425 or so.

the M9 makes sense for me.

I see what you did there ;)

And I agree, the M9 looks like a great phone and a worthy upgrade for me personally, coming from the M7.

The M8 was tempting enough, given how awesome it looked, but the smaller bumps in performance didn't quite justify the additional cost after only having the M7 for ~12 months.
(that, and I really had to keep to my 2 year upgrade cycle).

Can't wait for the M9 to hit stores and the few trusted reviews to emerge. I love that HTC kept the screen at 5" and 1080p. Best way to maintain a solid battery life.

HTC CEO Peter Chou steps down
http://phandroid.com/2015/03/20/htc-peter-chou-resigns/

Sad to see this happen to HTC, the little guy. I owned the One M8 last year, and it was one of, if not the best Android phone of 2014 IMO. Just fantastic build quality, best for Android in 2014. And pretty great battery life for a non phablet sized phone. And Sense 6 ran smooth as butter on it, and the GPE version was also an amazing smartphone.

I was expecting a really banging device in the One M9, but what HTC is releasing is not what I was expecting, and sucks the Snapdragon 810 is a poor processor, and HTC really has no other options to choose another cpu.

Maybe HTC didn't have the funds and backing to create an all new stellar One phone ? Were they handcuffed financially, and could only make a minor One M8 part 2 ?

I see the One M9 being a disaster sales wise for HTC in the months ahead. Sorry to say, but the public will be attracted to the new metal Galaxy S6 over the One M9, and the advertising blitz Samsung can afford to do, will make HTC easily forgotten by the public.

Will we even see an HTC One M10 next year, after the beating coming this year for them ?

I have a M7 and love it. I can't imagine not having front facing speakers and the buildquality is amazing. I've dropped it numerous times with no case and it comes back fine. Thing is the M9 doesn't give me any reason to upgrade. An extra .3 inches of screen, 1gb ram and faster processor with a possible better camera isn't enough. The M7 is more than capable enough

Holding out and hoping HTC still plans the rumored M9+ http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m9+-6977.php
  • 5.2" 1440p screen
  • Spapdragon 810
  • 20Mp back camera/4mp front
  • 3gb ram

This would make the upgrade more worth it. Either that or I upgrade to the LG G4 or Sony Xperia Z4 depending on those annoucements.

Love my M8 dev edition. Main selling point for me, everything was completely unlocked. Was terribly tired of the samsung crap. Probably won't go for the M9 though, just not enough reason to jump, though the warranty is pretty awesome now.

What would make you say the 810 is a poor chip?

I don't know if you mean me or that other guy. The other guy hates it because it's not Samsung...

I don't like it because Qualcomm itself said that it only used ARM's design because of time constraints; this means that they had hurried to create and release this chip to the market. Why would I want to buy something that the company basically admits is no good?

The Snapdragon 820, which is said to be coming out 2H2015, is of Qualcomm's own design. So I won't be getting any phone with a S810, which means no to the M9.

Was meaning the other guy, lol. But I see.

810 still is a strong chip though, just really don't like proprietary chips since I'm heavy into modding and they usually have less support than the snapdragons. Any of the main players looking to have a phone this year with the 820?

Note 5 and LG Nexus 7 phones will be the two Snapdragon 820 smartphones this Fall.

Presuming Sammy doesn't stick with their Exynos....which is a huge presumption, given the locked down nature of Exynos drivers, and Samsung's love of all things locked down.

Qualcomm actually has been the best at supporting development. Now that Samsung is also going to a custom design too, I'll put my trust in Qualcomm continuing support of development over Samsung, NVIDIA, and MediaTek.

And the dark horse here is Intel... Would Intel chips ever become common in Android devices (other than android TV DOA due to chromecasts)? (at least nvidia still have the Nexus 9)

AnandTech initial review not looking promising.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9102/the-htc-one-m9-review-part-1/6

While we’re still missing some of the pieces, based upon what data we have the One M9 is in an alarming place for a new smartphone. It’s pretty rare that a new phone ends up regressing in almost every major way compared to an old phone, but the One M9 ends up doing this in display and battery life. The SoC is better, but I can’t help but feel that Snapdragon 805 ends up being a better choice than Snapdragon 810 for a flagship smartphone at this time. The Snapdragon 808 may be better suited as an upgrade to the Snapdragon 805, but given the performance of the 810 I’m not really holding my breath. Given all of these issues, I’m almost tempted to point to the One M8 as the better phone, but until we get the full picture we won’t be coming to any final conclusions about the One M9.

Given that the software update they received was taking away the "benchmark cheat" in order to keep thermals down, it points directly to how poorly the S810 is for mobile devices.

It was even mentioned that even with the software limitation the phone would still get uncomfortably warm. I don't have too much faith in S810 products at this point.

Display needs work that is for sure and we still need to see what the official battery tests are with the camera tests.

Sad to read all these M9 reviews last night.

Basically battery life is no better, and possibly slightly worse than the M8. And it looks the same, and Sense 7 and Android 5.0 work just like they do on the M8, really no benefit or major new feature the M9 has over the M8.

One thing that irks me is the thickness of the M9, but still only a 2800mAh size battery. I am totally fine with a thick phone, but it then needs a giant battery in it. Look at the Galaxy S6 being super thin at 6.8mm and has a 2600mAh battery, but the M9 is much thicker at 9.4mm, so it should have a beefy battery like 3500mAh something like the Motorola MAXX phones at that thickness.

If HTC is going to have a smartphone so thick being 9.4mm, they should then design it hold a massive MAXX size battery, otherwise being that thick is useless in 2015.

Imagine if the S6 was 9.4mm thick, they could shove in some humongous battery in it. But the M9 is that extra thick, and barely has a larger battery than the S6.

It's just so unfortunate that Qualcomm basically fucked over all manufacturers who are using its Snapdragon 810 that, in Qualcomm's own admission (inferred), is crap...

And behold... GSMArena loves the camera where as everyone else is saying it's a disappointment. Seriously, MP does not mean everything.

I can't believe Qualcomm dropped the ball so hard with the 810. From what I've seen so far, there's vitually no difference between the M8 and M9 in performance and the camera difference is a wash between well lit and low light performance. They literally only had one major thing to fix and they fucked it up. Such a lost opportunity with how well the M8 was perceived and regarded last year.

On the bright side, Lollipop on my M8 is pretty sweet so far and gives me absolutely no want or need to upgrade anytime soon. But I was going to get my wife the M9 to replace her S4 if it turned out good. But pretty much going S6 Edge all the way now.

I just had a chance to play with the M9. Everything was smooth and nice. I can't tell if the screen is any better or worse over the M8. It sounds slightly better than the M8. I didn't take pictures so I can't compare. But I'm definitely not buying this phone with my own money. I don't have any good reason to upgrade from my M8 to this, especially after knowing that the battery life isn't that great.

No compelling reason to upgrade from my M7. Unless they announce an M9+ as rumored and fix the issues

Guess I'll wait for the LG G4 or Sony Xperia Z4

Bummer about the camera- not bad, but not great per the reviews, and to top it all off no OIS.

Guess I'll wait for the Z4- new camera sensor, 810 processor, maybe 4GB of RAM, etc... sounds pretty solid! I just hope they don't wait until the fall to release it like the latest rumors have been saying....

Wouldn't matter if Sony put a 1inch sensor in the Z4, it will still be trash unless they have their imaging department write the processing software for them.

I'm going to be getting a phone later this year and I'm not touching anything with a S810 in it.

Is really disappointing after reading up on all this, love my M8, but at least HTC still isn't locking the hell out of their phones. As long as they keep that up, they'll keep my money, just maybe not this set :/

I've been planing on going to the M9 w/ W10 for a long time. After all these reviews, I'm back to the waiting game : (

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Gala...-600-flagship-against-a-300-midranger_id67843

It's actually pretty sad that Asus came up with this, while HTC didn't. But that pixelmaster technology is evidently third-party (if I read it correctly), so maybe HTC could license it too.

In 100% crop, Zenfone 2 is just WTF blurry. It's like some kind of Picasso drawing.

If you view photo without 100% crop, HTC M9 still does a better job. In low light, pixelmaster essentially combine 4 pixel into 1, and boost the contrast.
I have a Asus NPFI, and camera still better than Zenfone 2...

I was really looking forward to switching from my crappy iPhone 4 to M9, but I guess I might just as well get the M8 and save some cash.
This whole generation of Snapdragon 810 phones should be skipped. But why the M8 instead of say the Moto X or Nexus 6? Just wondering.

Maybe because every review of the M9 suggests buying the M8 instead :p

I have the HTC One X+ for the last 2 years, it's been a good phone but I'm up for an upgrade and was waiting on the M9 but after reading Anandtechs reviews (both Part 1 and Part 2) and some others, I don't think it's worth paying $200 for.

Amazon (and probably others) have the M8 for $1 for 2 years. Thoughts?

Maybe go with the Samsung S6 or see what the LG G4 or Sony Z4 has to offer, but hard to beat $1

P.S. I have AT&T
