HTC One (M9)

Yes, let's remember all the GPS, wifi, and connectivity issues that plagued the first generation Galaxy S. And Everytime anyone post anything about Samsung, let's bring them up. Do what TTL would do.

Do you know the difference between hardware and software issues? Software is correctable via firmware and OS updates while hardware is not. Galaxy S WIFI and GPS work here and while Sprint coverage was/is spotty WIMAX was more reliable when in reception range than Thunderbolt LTE with the frequent disconnects even next to a tower that HTC never released a fix for. Lets talk facts not FUD.

The HTC Thunderbolt was... problematic.

I'll say this: the only hardware problem I've seen with the One M8 was a jiggly volume rocker. Didn't see backlight bleed or other issues. Not to say that it hasn't happened for others, but I don't think it's a glaring issue.

No one has used a car analogy for HTC because there probably isn't a car manufacturer so bad where the body panels don't line up or head lights leak on driver. :D

Panel gap and the phone falling apart has been a HTC specialty since the Touch Pro. ;)

For a person who, to this day, still doesn't acknowledge that Foxconn is an electronic component manufacturer, you want to talk about facts?

HTC Thunderbolt is a crappy phone, no doubt about that. It's a first generation LTE phone, and there is actually a phone we can directly compare the Thunderbolt to, Samsung Droid Charge, released a little later but also with first generation LTE. So let's talk about the Samsung Droid Charge.

Known issues of the Droid Charge:
1. GPS doesn't connect or is slow to connect (just like the phone it's based on, the Galaxy S)
2. Random reboots (much like all other Android 2 phones)
3. Phone locks up. Require a reboot. (much like all other Android 2 phones)
4. Screen is black after starting camera. Require a reboot.
5. microSD card read failure. Require a reboot.
6. Connectivity issues. Turning airplane mode on and off would get it working again. (much like all other Android 2 phones)
7. Lagging OS. (just like the phone it's based on, the Galaxy S)
8. Crappy battery life. (Just like the Thunderbolt)
9. Bad/inconsistent signal (Just like Thunderbolt)

Droid Charge obviously isn't as popular as the Thunderbolt was. So people don't talk about it much. Many issues are shared in the first generation Galaxy S, and some is Android OS in general. Samsung had gotten much of the sequel Galaxy S2 right, so no smart person would continue to bitch at Samsung for those issues that happened in first generation hardware after 4 years.

Now, let's get back on topic and talk about the M9.

Qualcomm just squashed the rumors of it running into manufacturing issues with demand and alleged overheating issues of the S810. S810 will arrive with no delays, so Qualcomm claims. This is good news for everyone.

Definitely good news about the 810. Really need the next crop of phones to have hardware level encryption support.

That seem to the one area that my security friends keep throwing punches at Android for. You think they could get a TPM module in a phone? No idea how Apple or Blackberry does it. All I know is that Microsoft has a TPM 2.0 requirement for BitLocker in InstantGo, so I'm assuming RT and Phone devices have it. And Chromebooks also have TPM modules.

Saving a upgrade on my plan to pick this up when it comes out :)

I have never really cared about or noticed the slightly not fluch glass on my HTC, probably because I add screen protectors to my phones anyways which would give it the same fell regardless. How often do I really remove my protector to run my fingernails over the glass to try to feel a difference lol.

My M8 has been the best smartphone I have ever owned in every way. I also got an S5, but my dad thought he wanted one so I gave it to him. It think he wishes he got the M8 too though.

1080p is fine for a phone screen, no reason to go higher. I would like to see less wasted space where the HTC logo is on the M8, and maybe a slightly thinner border as well.

I agree with that. But SLCD is still mostly owned by Samsung, so until HTC stops buying from SLCD, I think Samsung will continue to screw HTC over with nasty bezels.

Acer has never been top of the game but more like lower to maybe mid tier.

What's happening in the mobile market now is just a repeat of what's been happening in the PC market with Chinese vendors cannibalizing the whole market and affecting the higher tier brands Sony, Toshiba, etc.

Samsung still has the highest mobile marketshare and clear differentiation with unique features such as AMOLED, precision pen, OS enhancements like split screen multitasking and tier 1 components in display, low power DRAM, flash memory, etc. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out if they can maintain the differentiation to attract luxury buyers or if they succumb to lower cost commodity components like Apple's switch from PowerPC to x86-64 for PC.

High attrition rate isn't necessarily bad. Take the highly competitive SpecOps with very high attrition rate but they're the crème de la crème.

having had both, the M8 is a better phone in most regards than the S5, For doing things I actually care about anyways. The wireless charging and being waterproof are the only things that I find actually better on the S5, the UI is horrible in comparison, locked bootloader, flashlight isn't as bright, sound isn't as good.

Personally I think sound is much more important than being waterproof, and wireless charging is only really necessary if you have to remove a plug to charge your phone because it is water proof. Wireless charging would be a nice touch though and is a good feature. Just not enough of a feature for me to deal with touchwiz.

The screens on both are very good (samsung's amoled is finally a good looking amoled), I slightly prefer the HTC though I think, but it wouldn't be a deciding factor.

Dual speakers make more sense on a group shareable tablet like 2012 Note 10.1 but not on a solo use phone even phablet. Rather the space taken up by more screen which has far greater use.

I don't find that to be true, granted it's no fabulous stereo 2 speakers is still better than one. Front facing speakers at that! More importantly it's loud enough to share videos without needed a bluetooth speaker or sticking someones dirty ear buds into your ear. I can even listen to music at work when no one is around, all other phones I have tried suck at this. The speakerphone is also very good on the M8.

http://www.cnet.com/news/htc-one-m8-speaker-comparison/

Don't get me wrong I didn't think it was important when I purchased it, but I really do find that it is an important aspect in this kind of device, going back to the basics if you will.

Completely disagree. Not sure why a phone has to be single use. I'm always showing videos to people on my phone and I consistently get comments on my M8's speakers. Plus I get much more utility out of them around the house, as I listen to podcasts a lot while I do chores and I don't need an external speaker at all to fill the room enough. Also, it seems much more immersive while playing games and watching videos, more than a slightly larger screen would give, IMO. I always hated having to cup the speaker of my Note 2 and Wife's GS4 to amplify/clerify the sound. It'll almost be a deal breaker now if my next phone doesn't have front facing speakers.

A TPM just protects the keys used to do the encryption. It won't help with the real problem, which is computing instructions designed to speed up the encryption/decryption.

Never seen anyone huddle cheek to cheek sharing an extended video/movie on a phone or even phablet or 7" tablet. It's just too small and at that close of distance single speaker volume is plenty. Maybe a short camera clip but that's it otherwise it gets Chromecasted to big screen.

For a more scientific and less subjective review of phone speakers Gsmarena rates it just average:

Absolutely disagree. Front facing speakers are an excellent feature on a phone. It makes media consumption a lot better than an extra .2 inches of display area would. Seems like you are in the vast minority in your opinion on this.

Nope. 5.5" phablet usable distance is about lower rib cage and a good single speaker is plenty. 7" lower belly button. 8" lap. 10"+ for comfortable group sharing.

Trust me once the newness wears off you're going to come back and say you're right. Sharing a movie on a phablet isn't entertainment but torture sucking faces of other guys, having to smell the stench of their breath so close and the group spit session on the phone.

I completely agree with this notion. I want the Z3 purely because of the dual front speakers from my Z2. The dual speakers make a big difference in immersion for me as well. Thats one of the features I really liked about the HTC One Mx's. Samsung has really shitty speakers because my Note 3/2 were terrible.

What a nice cherry picked link. Everywhere else (Phonearena, Laptopmag, Anantech) measures the M8 at 75 and up to 95 dB on speaker output. But even if some other phones have a louder rear facing speaker.. it's pretty much completely negated by it facing away from you. Never mind things like the quality of the sound, bass, and having 2 separate channels/speakers.

WTF are you talking about..? No one watches movies with other people on a phone or even a tablet of any size.. that's just an absurd scenario to come up with to defend yourself. You said yourself "maybe a short camera clip but that's it otherwise it gets Chromecasted to big screen" lol, this is how you watch all movies with people, not on a phone or tablet. But for all the short clips I share with people, which happens a lot, it's much better to have front facing speakers for all those instances.

It's funny how you keep insisting that the front facing speakers are a fad and worthless, when HTC, Sony, and Moto are using them now. Plus when everyone else in this thread disagrees with you after having used them. I somehow doubt you've heard an M8 in person or you'd know how much they add to every media experience. But knowing you to be the resident Samsung fanboy, I wouldn't expect you to admit that and continue to downplay every disadvantage Samsung has over competing devices.

I like front facing speakers but they honestly aren't factored in to my buying decision.

On a tablet it's a no brainer to have stereo speakers since there's no size restriction. Had them on the early 2012 Note 10.1 then Nexus 10 but it wasn't as good due to the lighter and more hollow internals and the same mistake Apple is making with the iPad Air 2. Have also been shown M7 and M8 by people I know working for carriers. On a phone with size restriction it's about prioritization and a trade off between screen size or speakers. Have never seen others or myself look forward to group sharing a single phablet sized screen versus sharing content on YouTube/Facebook, multicast group sharing across multiple phones, bump WIFI transfer, output to large screen, etc. Instead, most tend to prefer the larger screen option since that's the most often used component to interact with a phone but if you prefer speakers get it or if you want both get the Nexus 6.

Smartphones are being used more and more as personal multimedia players. Sound plays a huge part in it. YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and Amazon Videos just play so much better on my Ones over my Nexus 5. I'll take a good display with great stereo front facing speakers over a better display with a handicapped mono back speaker. Heck, even if we do bump, share, or whatever a a video link to each other's personal devices, I'm pretty each of them would enjoy the video more with superior sounding audio. What a meaningless use case!

I do wish that HTC source a panel maybe from the same company that Motorola did so that the bezels would be less and more symmetrical for the M9. I just don't have too much faith in SLCD producing a panel that would make mother company look bad.

"Two turkeys don't make an eagle."

Most people spend most of their time at work. You want to annoy people with tiny average sounding speakers? Rest of the time is commuting or home where you can Bluetooth/WIFI to better speakers. If quantity over quality is the obsession get four even more sub par speakers with the next phone.

There is a rumor that they may make a windows version. If it stays a 5" and their is a windows version. I will most likely be getting this.

and a chicken without a wing still can't fly...

Just because people don't spend all their time in their cars doesn't mean they shouldn't feel comfortable or safe being in them.

Why use toilet paper when people wash their hands after anyway? Like you, not only could I gave nonsensical analogies, I can ask stupid questions too.

There are plenty of websites, if not all other tech sites that had measured the sound, that refutes the numbers that GSMArena measured. Maybe GA had the phone faced down or had the microphone pointed at the back for consistency because all other phones had the speakerphones in the back. Who knows.

While on the subject of consistency, how is it that you can bother your coworkers with tiny average speakers if it isn't loud enough to bother them?
That would be a killer phone! I'd dump iOS for it.
Have you tried out the M8 for Windows? I've never seen one in person, only read reviews. Plenty of Nokia/Microsoft though.

Same reason there's a no speaker phone policy in open areas as they're administratively disabled and you get wireless/wired headset.

Whether or not you have front facing speakers, if your company has a rule against playing music out loud, what difference does that make? None. Just like whether or not you have front facing speaking, if you have a group of people huddling behind your phone's 5-6" screen to watch a video, would that make people prefer mono? No.

When people do something alone on their own phone in their own time, something that does happen often, most people will likely find more enjoyment over having stereo than mono. There are certainly cases where music, especially the oldies and classic rock, sounds better on mono, because the source is mono or mixed for mono. But that's not what you're saying.

If you're also claiming that the One M8 is "tiny" and "average" in terms of sound because of what GSMArena did for the speakerphone test on page 6, ignoring what they wrote on page 7 about general audio, then you cannot also claim that the M8 is too loud.

And, if you really want to talk about audio, let's see what audiophiles from headfi have to say:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/711784/new-htc-one-m8-audio-review

I'll trust all those guys over someone who makes nonsensical comparisons all day.

And just for fun since I'm correcting my grammar:
Saying that "S-Pen on the Note 4 sucks because you can't use anything else with a tip to write on your screen" probably makes more sense than any of your BS. Got another one: "If you lose your S-Pen, you got a spent $$ to replace it. Why S-Pen is a total rip-off." Have I graduated from your school of thought yet? Anyone can BS...

Just an fyi the iPhone uses Samsung TLC NAND which is pretty Fucking durable. No sd chip will ever outlive it.

I have and liked it, but decided to wait for the M9 when I read a Windows version was a possibility.

Time to actually get excited again on smartphones. A huge hardware evolution is coming. Obviously Samsung, LG, and others will have this too, but this is the first leaked specs.

The HTC One (M9), code named HIMA, is scheduled for March 2015 release.

Rumored Specs:
S810 2.0GHz*4 + 1.5GHz*4
3GB RAM
5" FHD
VoLTE/CA/LTE Cat.6
20.7MP back camera
13MP or 4MP UltraPixel front camera
2840mAh
Android 5.0/Sense 7.0

Source:
http://www.pocketables.com/2014/12/...one-m9-codenamed-hima-get-leaked-twitter.html

My take:
3GB of RAM, yeah!
5" 1080p, sure will save battery.

If the next HTC One M9 is true to these specs, it'll be my next phone.

some lame arguments about sound, I'm kinda of surprised. Is a tablet a better device than a phone for viewing videos? YES! The thing is I don't carry around my tablet everywhere I go. if you do then fine, sound isn't as important on your phone. At work yes I usually use headphone, but if I'm working late I'll just use my phone. It works fine for audio books too or while I'm working on something in the garage. Sure typically if available I'll still grab my Bluetooth speaker, but it's still a nice option to have! If I'm camping at the desert and want to show someone a video, or a song, guess what? I'll probably have my phone, but not necessarily my tablet. The whole sound isn't important because a tablet is a better device is pretty stupid. You know whats better than a tablet for viewing video? A TV! OMG, I can play to a TV with my phone, so why do I even need a tablet then or good sound on my phone. Especially if you lug your TV around everywhere you go!

Despite the device not being ideal to share something with a group, it happens over and over again because guess what? The phone is the device you bring with you, and often you won't have a chromecast or a TV or won't be in a location that has one available.

The phone does have good output for headphone like head-fi says, but no phone will be the ideal device for an audiophile. Still it's the device you have with you!

I hope the camera preforms as well as the M8's and isn't just a bunch of extra pixels I don't need.

More leaks roundup from Upleaks

For you windows fans, Hima W = Windows

Hima will be FHD
Hima Ace will be like the E9 for a China with dual sims
Hima Ultra will be QHD

Don't know if HTC is pulling something out of Apple's playbook by releasing the One and the One Max at the same time.

Still no credible leaks of the front panel yet (Upleaks just squashed one made by another rumor site).

I think the M9 will be 5.5" screen size. Rumors has it the Galaxy S6 will also be 5.5", and we know how popular the 6+ is, with that same screen size, and LG G3 and OnePlus One already use that size, and is IMO the perfect size, as long as the bezels are very slim.

I think 2015 will see 5.5" become the new norm for Android.

I could deal with a 5.5" screen, though it might make the M9 pretty damn long with those bezels/speakers at both ends. I prefer 1080p, but most likely it'll be 1440p.

I could only see 5.5 inches if HTC pulls an LG G3 and squeezes as much as possible out of the available space. If not, I'd rather have a 5-inch screen again... it's already a tall phone!

Or it could be 5.2" the other somewhat popular Android screen size.

The M7 was 4.7", then the M8 grew the screen size a bit to 5.0". So I could see and expect the M9 to grow again, and I'd guess either 5.2" or possibly 5.5". And most likely will be 1440p regardless, because like it or not, that's popular for the new high end flagships.
