HTC Incredible (Reception Bug)

I just bought my new HTC Incredible phone for Verizon. When I left the store I noticed that I only had 1 bar of service and the majority of the ride home I only had a bar of service. Ocassionally I would see the phone spike to full coverage but almost immediately drop back down to 1 bar or no bars. However, all of this being said, even when the phone has 0 or 1 bars displayed, I can make calls and surf the internet no problem. As I type this thread I am sitting at my desk which has a window right next to me and I have 1 bar of service and my actual signal strength as reported by the phone is -90dBm. Also, my coworkers sitting nex to me have Verizon, Spring, & ATT and all of them have perfect service. I found a few websites that tried to clarify what range of dBm's the phone should be in and the corresponding "bar level" but I wanted to throw this out on the forum.

It seems to be a very popular issue with the new HTC Incredible phones and a good bit of the Motorola Droid phones. Does anyone on here have the same issue and has anyone heard about an update being rolled out to fix it?

I get a range of bars but I've never had a call dropped and that's better than I can say for AT&T.

Right now at work I get full signal and at home in my basement I get 1 bar, but the calls go through..

Many of the articles suggest its maybe a UI problem, have you tried doing a side-by-side download comparison between a Moto Droid and Incredible while standing in the same spot (or a speedtest)?

I think that would go a little further towards verifying or refuting the UI theory.

For comparison, my Moto Droid has -85dBm with three out of four bars atm. I've heard that there is no standard for "bars" across manufacturers. The fact that mine is -85 and has three bars and yours is -90 makes me think that the Incredible has a different threshold, as I cant imagine 5dbm equalling two bars. Lower is better I think. I'll see if i can get my Droid to get -90 and see what it says. My friend has the Incredible on order, so once he gets it I'll be able to run some tests.

Initial reports aren't very promising though. Some say that have dropped calls and shotty service, but others say it's fine. Time will tell if it works in areas with not so great service (but where you should still get it).

FYI, Verizon has a little known return policy after the initial 30 days or whatever. If you return it X amount of times in X amount of months, they will give you a replacement if it is within one year. For example, I think two years ago I had a Voyager. That phone was very problematic, so i had it replaced quite often. After 7 months i was allowed to pick out a new phone that was equal to the price i paid for it. The only thing was that my "new after two" upgrade started over. So if this ends up being a problem down the road, I'm sure you could take that route and get a new phone when it comes out.

That makes me feel a little better. As I have typed this reply I am sitting at my desk and my Incredible is LOCKED at -85dBm and it is displaying 1 bar out of 4 and has dropped to 0 bars for a split second. I think it is some software bug that hopefully they will fix.

I have the Moto Droid. Sitting at my desk at work I typically have 1-2 bars.

When I have 2 bars I am usually around -95 dBm, when I have 0 Bars I'm at -85 dBm.....

That doesn't make any sense.

Now I'm lost. At my desk, I get 85dBm. When I'm in my basement, i get 95dBm. Outside, 70-75. The strange thing is that when I'm at my desk, it's a solid three bars; basement, solid four bars; and outside, fluctuates between 3-4. Only when I am IN a call does the basement [immediately] go down to one bar. When i end the call, it goes back up to 4.

Speed tests: Basement 1.2 - 1.7mbps, Outside 1.4 - 1.9, Desk 1.6 - 2.1. I ran four each place.

I've always had pretty good service at my house, so I'd think that if you're in that range, you should be good. Check it when you go outside and see what it drops to.

I'm interested in how this develops. I finally got one of my friends to get an Android phone (and switch to Verizon) and I'm hoping he doesn't have worse service than AT&T!
