HT Multiplier

so, i have a question about overclocking my computer.. i found out that my mobo can handle 334 fsb, i havent tested my new ballistic ram yet, and cpu could handle 264.. but i see some people that have 3000+ venice's and get like 2.8 out of them.. that's crazy considering i have a 3200+ venice and get 2.6 out of IT.. but i kept reading on some people's posts and noticed that someone told another guy that couldnt get it any higher to lower the multiplier.. and i also noticed that some people run their cpus at 290x9 (for example).. cant they just run it x10 and get 2.9 out of it? so if i went home and tried lowering my HT multi to 4x and started over on my cpu OC, would i possibly get a higher OC? although 2.6 is good from a 3200 venice, i honestly expected a TAD bit more..

for those of you that always ask what system i have..
asus a8n-sli premium
crucial ballistic 2x1gb
3200+ venice
pc p&c 510 deluxe sli
74gb raptor
bfg 7800gtx
watercooled cpu, gpu, chipset

The 3000+ is stuck on a 9x multiplier, while the 3200+ is on a 10x multiplier. You cant raise your multiplier, only lower it.

understandable..

is there any way that i could raise my overclock? the fsb is at 264.. x10 and ht multi at 5x.. could i lower the ht multi and try raising the fsb some more? or no? and how can you tell if raising the vcore on the cpu is helping or not? i tried raising it but it only boosts it minimally..

If you're CPU can only do 2.64Ghz (264x10), then that's all you're going to get unless you raise the voltage or get better cooling. That's a decent OC for a Venice. You can see if your HTT is limiting you. Lower the HT multi to 4X or 3X and try to go above 264 (although if you've already been to 334, then you've already lowered it to 3X probably).

actually, i raised it back up to 5x to get to 264.. so what exactly does ht multi do? would it be bad if i could get it higher with 4x?

From what I understand you want to keep it around 1000mhz. So, if you're running 264x5, you're way over and your board could be causing you problems. I'd lower it to x4 at least if not x3.

i dont get it.. so you want it closest to 1000mhz if you multiply the fsb to the ht multi? ohhh.. that kinda makes sense.. i just bust out the calculator and tried it, and it was pretty close..

would this help my cpu OC a tiny bit higher?

Well, 264x5=1320, and it's only supposed to be 1000. Try lowering the multi to x3 and see if you can get past 264. 264x3=less than 1000 :).

since 264x4 is 1056.. so if i wanted to up the fsb, then i should stick with 3 so i could near 1000 more.. ok.. i get it.. thanks
