HSF Direction

Hi,

Am starting to hook things up in my first build.

  • IP35 Pro mobo
  • TJ09 case
  • Ultima-90 heatsink and 90mm fan

What is the optimum direction to point the cooling fan through the Ultima-90?

I'm placing 2 120-mm exhaust fans at the top of the case. Of course there is also a factory-installed 120-mm exhaust fan at the rear (top) of the case.

So, I'm thinking that placing the heatsink fan to blow directly upward will be more efficient in cooling than having the heatsink fan blow toward the rear of the case. This should take the hot air from the heatsink in more of a straight line (and heat rises) out of the case.

This is how I installed last night.

If it's better, for some reason, to point the heatsink fan toward the rear, I can turn the cooler to point in that direction instead.

Suggestions?

Steve

As long as its in the direction of one of the cases' exhaust fans, then it'll be fine. However, I'd mount it to face the front of the case, exhausting to the rear exhaust fan -- this will also push some air over the MOSFET Heatpipe/Heatsink module, which would help cool the board better.

Thanks. This is just the type of feedback I was looking for. Simple enough to turn the heatsink/fan 90 degrees to send the airflow to the rear.

Yes. Have the fan push the air to the rear, in hopes that you have an exhaust fan there, this will provide optimal results

I'm considering building a new computer with the same hardware except with a different case. I'd probably mount the heatsink/fan to so that airflow goes from front to back.

Quick question though: when mounted this way, does the Ultima overhang the edge of the motherboard? I'm asking because I have a case already prepared but the power supply is located right next to the mobo's edge.

This website has a review on the TJ09. It looks very similar inside. The PSU is in the same place and the way the drive cages are set up with fans on both sides. I wonder if its manufactured by the same company and then re branded as Lian Li and a Silverstone.

I don't think so, having used the TJ09 it is pretty different than the A70B, even though there are similarities.

I'd point it up,but try both and see what you get.

No it does not overhang, its very small.
