HP Quits WebOS Devices

Don't forget Windows Phone, the Mango update is actually VERY good and hopefully there will be some slick Nokia hardware to accompany shortly.

Especially some dual core qHD hawtness. I know it's not useful, but seriously, I'm sold on stuff like that :(

Im easily sold on that stuff too, regardless WebOS was on its way out when HP bought it. They didn't try very hard to get the device support, nor does it seem to be very responsive.

And nothing of value was lost. Oh wait, HP killed the entire potential that Palm's webOS had, along with the good relationship with Microsoft. What worries me more than the sudden (though not unexpected) death of Palm's legacy is the talk about getting rid of the Perssonal Systems Group.

Microsoft is not going to be happy about this, and it REALLY is a bad signal. I think HP's management is making a big mistake; they should wait for Windows 8 to come to the rescue. They're not like Apple.

While it does create some uncertainty in the PC market it's one less phone and tablet competitor for Microsoft.

I don't think its a bad thing really. Hp has attempted to spin off its pc stuff before. Even if they do succeed its not like the division disappears.

Agreed, there are the #1 laptop maker in the world so someone will definitely want that. The problem for Microsoft is that one of it's biggest partners is kind of in a limbo with the launch of Windows 8 coming probably within a year, possibly a shorter time frame than HP getting this sorted out. Who is going to want to by an HP computer before this is settled? And HP does take up a lot of retail space.

You can buy HP for 21% off today -- I mean HPQ the stock. HP is a lot more as a company than the silly tablets. I am NOT giving investment advice, just sayin...

Wonder if they will have a fire sale on the tablets. I'd pay $100 for it. Best Buy is sending back 270,000 units since they only sold like 20K units.

I want win8 to skyrocket like win7 did, but if the software liscencing goes stale for a while I don't see it hurting ms or hp honestly. I honestly do not think this will delay win8 software on oems.

If it does hp can place in easy upgrade software sales when it does happen. Dell did this before and it worked out well for them.

Don't worry. They will just spin the PSG off into a separate company and call it Compaq.

eh, I don't think so. http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsof...re-the-pc-is-headed-plus-is-the-new-post.aspx

THIS is Microsoft's tablet strategy in these two sentences from the link:

1.There are a set of important things that PCs do uniquely well, and they aren’t going away.
2.PCs are rapidly and dramatically getting better at doing the things those companions do.

Microsoft's strategy is to make the PC do it all, companions devices will simply be different types of PCs.

Right. HP spinning of the PC division doesn't mean much, IBM did it. This is what HP wants to be - IBM- software + services.

Look at how successful Lenovo has become since acquiring IBM's PC division.

Gotta say, Apple is smirking right now, and not just because it was the obvious cause of both webOS devices' end and looking at selling the PC group.

HP's main PC group has generally done alright, but it's also had a bigger company around it providing both lots of marketing and a safety net when things go wrong. If the group is spun off, it doesn't have that cushion. Dell, Acer, or Lenovo could buy it, but two of those three are also in serious trouble in the PC market and would probably drag down what's left of HP.

I don't think Apple's going to absorb HP's market share, but more floundering Windows PC makers is exactly what it wants. It's already slamming Acer, ASUS, Dell, and HP through the iPad. A separate HP PC business trying to find its footing would just help that more.

Not sure what your smoking but the only obvious reasons it failed was due to shitty hardware decisions and piss poor software support.

Nothing Apple is doing had anything to do with that other then HP itself.

HP is asking itself to do the thing the current organization thinks it needs to do,

I understand this is a circular reference...

As the elementals unfold ...

HP is navigating in the realm of Apple/Microkia/Googlerola/Oracle/aggressive foundries, charging OEM/ODM, Whether in the Cloud, patent operatives, feuds between ARM and x86, and silent march of MIPS from the east.

HP holds in its hands at the front door the Proliant Generals, deep in the fortress StorageWorks keeps its wisdom, links are Pro-Curve roads everywhere it goes, its residents rest on the dream aboard reams of LaserJets, in the Grand Council Software Services tries to build and refine the garden...Within this kingdom priests transmit the old lineage shield opaque from the modern world...

The location of the remaining entities...

Maybe ala EMC - VMware, who is going to carry the torch ???

The moment ala Apple on the brink finding its way around netcraft confirmation ... but HP is not at that scenario.
