HP Laptop DVD Drive problem

I have someone that has an HP DV6000 laptop and the CD/DVD drive no longer works. The light comes on on the drive, but it does not see or read discs. I took and good working CD/DVD drive and put into the computer and the same results...computer doesn't see anything from the CD/DVD drive. So, I am assuming at this point there is something else beside the drive causing the issue. The computer works perfect. It shows the CD Drive in Windows Explorer but when you click on the drive it just says please insert a disk into the cd drive. A disc is in the drive.

Any suggestions?

I can't get it to boot with any cd. I don't even see a manual option to force it to boot from cd...i.e. F2, F10, ESC...this pc doesn't list any key to press. I do have it set to boot from cd first and the drive light comes on, but it will not boot from any disc...BARTPE, Windows any version...etc.

Getting into the BIOS is not a problem...been getting into it by pressing F10 and have the first boot set to cd/dvd drive. The problem I was talking about is some (most) computers offer a key to press for the boot menu...i.e. F9 and then it allows you to select what you want to boot from on that particular boot. This computer does not and from what I have read from searching on the web, I have not found anyone else that has posted anything about it either. The only suggestion I have found is to go into the BIOS and set the cd/dvd drive to first boot. Doing that, this computer will simply light up the cd/dvd drive light and then continue on to boot Windows. It doesn't matter what disc is in the drive...Windows, Linux, BartPE, UltimateBoot...etc. I have tried another good drive in this computer and still same problems.

Might be that the cable/connector to the DVD drive to the motherboard has partially unseated? If it is askew at one end, it might prevent full data communications but have enough of a connection for power? I certainly don't know the internals of your particular model, but that connection is something I would check, especially since you've tried another drive that you know is good.

This is an HP Pavillion DV6000. The cd/dvd drive just slides in and out. It actually looks like a SATA type connector and when you slide the drive in it makes the connections. But I will take it apart and check the wires around it and see. Thanks!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant. I have a little HP laptop as well and, in my model at least, there is still some cabling that goes between the motherboard and that fixed docking point that the drive clicks into. Would probably be a pain to disassemble it to the point that a person could check all of that out, but it was my best stab. As always, I reserve the right to be wrong.
