Having a boot (maybe hard drive) problem with an HP Pavillion DV9000 running XP Media Center Edition with SP 3.
Problem:
Assume laptop is running and we are doing a reboot. This is what happens
XP closes.
Laptop tries to load.
Hard drive LED shows activity then CD LED shows activity but nothing loads.
This cycle is repeated sometimes ones, sometimes 20 times until it finally XP loads. From there on everything is fine. Laptop will go in sleep mode and wake up with no problems.

I check boot sequence and it show CD first then Hard drive. I change the order but no change.
I updated Bios from F.42 to F.43. No chance
I read event logs but I can't come up with anything.

Any help will be appreciated

Cyclone: Thanks for your reply. I did run chkdsk /r and nothing was found. I could run it again. Then I will run diskcheckup as you suggested.
I will let you know the results.

Downloaded and installed Diskcheckup. Tried to run but it said
"No SMART compatible drives were detected"

What's next

Good question. At the moment I don't know.
I know F10 will get me to Bios but were do I enable SMART

I rebooted and got BIOS open. Menu looks like:
Main
Security
System Configuration
Diagnostics
Exit
Am I looking for something that says SMART ?

yeah it would say SMART for hard disk or something like that. I would imagine it'll be in System Configuration if the ability to turn it on or off is there. I checked an HP ProBook 4420s I had in my cabinet for SMART setting, but it doesn't have it. Most older computers would have that setting though.

Azhar: I looked in System Configuration but ability to turn SMART on/off in not there.

Any other suggestions ?
Thanks all for your help

From the BIOS Run the diagnostics function. There should be an option to check the harddrive. I would run a full test. Also what brand of harddrive is it? Try the manufacturer for one of their HD diagnostic tools. It sounds like your boot sector is going bad, or the harddrive is taking a crap.

HP/Dell do not give you an option to enable/diable smart drives they are auto detected and configured and no user intervention required. IF laptop is not booting you can try to repair the boot sector but in all honesty the drive is most likely on the way out...amd need to be replaced

Thanks to all of you for your help.
I reinstalled the OS but the problem is still there.
So, new hard drive is on order.
Thanks
