HP Desktop Problems

I'm currently trying to diagnose a problem with an HP Pavilion a375c. The problem is that when I turn on the computer the monitor doesn't receive a signal, and thus there is no display. I have taken the following steps:

- I have connected the computer to another working monitor (no change).
- I have taken out the video card and replaced it with one that works (no change).
- I have tested the new and old video card on a different computer, and they both work.
- I have disconnected and reconnected items in the pci slots (no change).

The computer does turn on. I can hear the fans, I can open the drive bays, and the power light is lit. The only thing that I can figure is that there is something wrong with the motherboard, after all this computer is about 5 years old. Also, before anyone asks, I have looked at the HP Pavilion website for help before I came here.

So I ask you hardware guru's what could it be?

Test the PSU, CPU and RAM in another system. If they work, then its the mobo. You can also try another PSU on the HP (unplug all unnecessary stuff like HDDs and pci expansion cards, etc).

I'm kind of curious to know, before I start any invasive work, how the CPU or the RAM could cause the computer to turn on but with no signal to the monitor. If it were anything but the motherboard or PSU wouldn't I atleast get beep codes or some onscreen prompt?

Do you get error beeps without RAM installed?
Do you get error beeps without a vidcard installed?
Do you get error beeps without both RAM and vidcard installed?

If you get no video signal on a known working monitor, then the system is not POSTing, which means something is wrong with either the CPU, RAM, Vidcard, Mobo, or PSU, or some combination of those. If you get no error beeps without RAM, pull the vidcard. If you get no error beeps without either, then its probably the mobo, CPU, or PSU. Then you can try re-seating the CPU, then try another PSU. I could go on for a while...

Thank you for your help enginurd I'll try some of your ideas tomorrow. One thing I can't get over is how messy the cabling is inside, but your help is much appreciated.

I wonder if any of the parts are worth trying to find on the Internet, or maybe it would be cheaper just to buy a new computer.

It'll be more cost-effective to build a new PC.

I started back up playing with it today and I pulled the power cables from the drives, but that lead to no change. I have also pulled the video card out and hooked it up, and it seems that there is drive activity, but no error beeps. I then put the card back in but that just lead to a blank screen again.

- edit -

I pulled a stick of memory out of the computer, leaving just one inside, and now the computer boots, but when it is at the loading screen for windows I get a blue screen and it restarts too fast to see what it says. I tried starting under safe mode, but again an error at the loading screen and it reboots.

I then pressed F10 to start recovery mode, but just before it gets done I get a blue screen with this error:
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
STOP: 0x00000050 (0xc3640000, 0x00000000, 0x8043EF88, 0x00000000)

Another update, I have switched out each pair of ram in every possible configuration I can think of and I still get a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error when loading windows, and when I go into recovery mode.

Anyone have any ideas?

sounds like bad RAM, try the other stick, or a known working one. could also try swapping out ur drive cables.

Run memtest on one stick of RAM and see if it passes.

I tried many configurations of both sticks. One in a slot one left out, the first one left out and the other inside, and both of them in (which oddly enough worked). I'm starting to think this computer hates me. No matter what, the same error comes on screen.

I looked at the error on the Internet, and it seems that this error could also be CPU related and if that's the case I don't think it is worth trying to fix. Trying to find and buy parts for a five year old computer seems somewhat counterproductive.

Sadly no, I think I would have to buy some 184 PIN PC2700 in order to test it out. Oddly enough if you were to ask a week ago I would have said both of these two sticks were working, because at that time I wasn't having any troubles with it.

Had this problem on self-built PCs. Once was a bad video card, and the other time it was bad RAM.
