At first I thought this video might have been a joke, hoax or viral video but after watching it a few times, you have to admit that the software is definitely not working correctly. This reminds me of the Nikon blink detection snafu from back in May of this year.

I would think it has to do with the lack of contrast between his facial features. Also the fact that his hair is dark also. The woman has back hair and white face, her facial features are higher contrast so it is easier to detect.

    Choose the most accurate answer:

    A. HP invested time and $$ into writing software that purposely will not track dark skin.
    B. The HP is so advanced that it has become self aware and decided not to track dark skin.
    C. HP did not thoroughly test their software.
    D. HP did test their software, discovered the bug, and left it in because they are racist.
    E. HP did test their software, discovered the bug, and left it in because they are too cheap to fix it.
    F. Someone needs to contact the NAACP.
    G. Poor light and a small image sensor are limiting the contrast ratios required by the poorly written software to accurately determine facial features.

Glad to to see that the guy's not a jerk about it.

Umm, any one notice that everything is backwards in the video like pointing the camera at a mirror?

I am sure HP took the time to program in race detection features so that they could disenfranchise minorities.

Taking images of dark objects against a bright background has always been difficult. Take a photography class to learn something about it. Nothing to do with race at all. You could write an algorithim to try to compensate for the lighting difference but some companies do it better then others. Lousy algorithims do not a racist company make.

My guess would go to either C or E, but it could also be that that particular one was bugged/faulty while others may not be. Kinda funny though.

I noticed everything is backwards. It does not work because of Contast. Ie Needs More Light because of his Skin Color.

One of the Problems when doing Photography of Dark Skinned Persons. One of the things they teach in School of Lighting. Or at least when I went thru Cine School. Always used more light for Dark Skinned People.

It's one of the problems with Wedding Photography. White Dress and Black or Dark Suit.

HP needs to write disclaimers on the outside packaging saying imaging software may not function correctly with people with dark skin.

This cracks me up. The fact the guy is funny about it just makes this video 10x better.

Maybe HP IS racist and they need to hire some black product testers?

All of that money funneled into a project, this seems like a dramatic oversight. Surely it works just fine in different lighting maybe... maybe?

It's backwards for a reason. It's because when you lean to your right, you expect it to respond the same way and lean to your right, which means it needs to flip the image and "you" on the screen is leaning to the left. Just like a mirror as pointed out.

So, you're suggesting white and other fair-skinned people shouldn't have access to software because it doesn't work correctly for people of African descent?

    Man, that's incredibly offensive.

LOL so fake i used to work for HP here in Houston Tx for 3 yrs as a Beta Tester for Intel, nvidia and ati drivers. I built million dollar servers for many a company which under contract i cant say.Was on the assembly also and did other jobs for 3 yrs for HP. We had actually had a black lady demonstrate this new technology at one of our seminars before this video came out about a yr and half ago. LOL guess what...............It worked....lies i tell you!!!

Funny video - and the fact that the black guy is laid back about it makes me actually want to jump on his side of the fence.

My actual thought though was the fact the camera is pointed up to some pretty heavy commercial lighting that certainly does not help the situation. Turn the PC 180 degrees and try again?

Either way -- its funny, and maybe HP will see it and "fix" it?

If the black guy would have some out screaming about equality, oppression, and all the stuff the passionate protesters usually drum up, I would have shut the video off and dismissed him as an ignorant SOB. Friendly tip to black people - if you have a problem with something don't get violently mad, that just puts us whities into ignore mode :) Be like this guy -- he's cool.

Well I think it's just because there's black, and there's black.

The guy in the video's a darker shade of black. Nothing a bit of lighting can't fix though.

Obviously, HP didn't do this on purpose. It would be quite foolish in our modern social environment. However, I would definitely take advantage of the situation and try and stir up a "hornets nest" and try and get some free goodies or even file a law suit. Sure, he might not win, but why not try and get your own bailout. I'm sick of the the major corporations getting whatever they want....

Problem with your argument is that it forces everyone down to the lowest common denominator. If we picked up some african tribesmen with a lip plate, stretched neck, and a bone thru his nose, should we scrap the entire project because it doesnt work oh him?

Even if a system is designed to work with everyone and everything, people in their infinite stupidity will find ways to crash it/exploit it/ or play with it.

One angle I have yet to see discussed is you have to admit it's pretty funny that instead of just saying it's a bug, only a black person would pull the "race" card. Computers or anything inanimate are not racist at all as they are doing what they are programmed to do.

One of the main reasons white people are so lax on the race thing is because the race card has been played so much it has no meaning anymore. if something doesn't go the way a black person wants it to go it's automatically racist.

I still think the guy is funny on video though.

My bet is that "G" is the most "accurate answer" - but I wouldn't be surprised to find "E" was also accurate. HP will probably want to go with "C", since they can shift the blame for part of this to those who wrote the software. And by all means kick some "F" into gear, just because... HP obviously needs some comeupance. :p

The thing is, the background is overall white and very bright. His face, being very dark colored, sticks out very obviously (quite a bit more than the white coworker -- her face blends in to the background more).
