HP 2509b Review

I asked this in another thread and never go a reply, so I'll ask here for anyone who owns this monitor: does both the HDMI and DVI ports come with HDCP compatibility? I heard it has it on the DVI, but I haven't heard if it does on it's HDMI connection.

Of course:D

I was hoping you would have figured this out after seeing PS3 Blu ray movies being played in the video review and KZ3 pictures in the written part:D.

/facepalm Oh, right. How did I miss that?! :p In my defense, when I looked at both last, it was pretty late. :D For some reason, I was thinking the BR disk was being played on your PC, which I assumed was via DVI; I don't know why. Hahaha

Well, with HDCP support on both ports, I'll probably end up getting it. If the glossy screen proves to be no good in my rather bright room, I can always take it back. ^_^ lol

The glossy screen shouldn't be too bad. I have a window and a lamp right behind me and the only time I can see either is when the screen goes totally black. I haven't had a problem with it washing out any actual images. You won't return it, the PQ is too good. ;)

That's good to hear. Looks like I'll be picking one up in a couple of weeks when I get paid. :D It's been a while since I bought a monitor; what's the best place to buy from as pertaining to return policies and such? I bought my 226BW from NewEgg, but I hear their monitor return policy is pretty bad (and I don't think the 2509b is on there anyways).

Completely forgot and it has been returned, sorry.

I bought one of these HPs today and will be picking up from BestBuy ($199 seems like a great price). My Samsung PX2370 just a few dead pixels and it also had pretty bad backlighting out of the bottom right hand corner. If it was more uniform, I could have handled it but in combination with the pixels it just has to go back to Newegg.

Anyone know what the heck the differences are between the HP 2509b, the 2509p, and the 2509m? I know the M version was mentioned a bit earlier, but I'm still a bit confused on the differences between the three.

Oh, ok. I was just curious since it seemed like any time I tried searching for info or prices on the 2509B, most of the results would be for the M version, and I had seen references to a P version as well; I was wondering if they were the same panel with different feature sets or not.

It seems 'not' might be correct. Interestingly, it seems the M version comes in multiple sizes (23, 25, and 27" models), while the B does not. Seems the P has a 23" and a 25" variant, but no signs of a 27" version. Also, a couple of comments I found say the P version is just the M version with a built-in webcam and USB ports.

That's all I was able to find; maybe it'll be of use to others. It seems odd that while the M variant is the more publicized one, the B seems to be the hidden gem. It'd be interesting to see how the M and B versions really compare. But yeah, with no definite answers on the M/P versions in this regard, I'm certainly going to get the 2509b at this point unless something even nicer in my price range catches my attention (doubtful! :D).

Edit: Off-topic a bit, but I just saw that there looks like there is/was a 2309v as well (with no sign so far of any other size variants of the V...whatever the V version is). Good grief! :p

Well, it's going back. At least 2 dead pixels. Plus it's kind of hard to read text. Gaming seems fine thoguh.

Im sure its too late but I suggest you exchange it instead of returning it. Mine is just awesome! Maybe you got a lemon or something cause mine looks terrific with only minor tweaking.

Agreed, got mine from Best Buy when it was on sale for $200 and it was in pristine condition; no backlight bleed, no scratches/dents, no dead/stuck pixels. Gorgeous and well performing monitor, highly recommended.

Great review OP!

I just got this monitor and love it; the picture quality is the best of any monitor I've ever owned, including my old CRTs I had many years ago.

One thing, though: I remember NCX saying in my old thread that the 2509b has a Headphones/Audio-Out jack for outputting sound from the HDMI port to a pair of external speakers or headphones. But for the life of me, I can't find this jack. Where is it? I ask because I'm trying to get my PS3 hooked up to the monitor via HDMI, and I can't figure out how I'm going to get audio to play through either my desktop speakers or my headphones.

Just got this monitor and it looks great. Excellent blacks and backlight uniformity.

Only problem is that on a white screen the bottom is more green and the top more red. This is while viewing the monitor straight on, viewing from different positions doesn't really change this. It is pretty subtle, but I notice it immediately on web pages like youtube and it annoys me. Anyone else notice this?

I haven't but then I'm not super picky about stuff like that so I could be missing it. I'm generally looking slightly up at my screen cause I'm usually reclining in my chair but everything looks great to me.

I did not see the Audio-Out. I don't believe it has one..

I never noticed, have you tried the settings proposed by the OP?

I got this monitor last week (got it for $199 @ FutureShop). I enjoy the bright colors and crisp image quality. Coming from a Flatron E2250 (LED from LG) I can say that the colors are nicer, the black are darker and the whites are brighter.
I will buy a second one soon enough, I'm more than happy with my purchase.

Yep, I am using the settings NCX posted. I didn't think I was too picky about this sort of thing (Its back-lighting issues that I am very picky about), and I wasn't looking for it or anything. I just randomly noticed on a webpage with a white background, totally unexpected. I had someone else look at the monitor who is definitely not picky about this sort of thing, and noticed the green gradient too.

Maybe I got a bad monitor. :(

I like this monitor, maybe I will give it another shot. Trouble is that they are not in store at best buy, I had to do ship to store for this one. I wonder how they would handle an exchange.

I just pulled up Toms Hardware and if I look real hard I think I can see that it it gets a little reddish towards the top of the page. Definitely nothing that would ever bother me and I never would have noticed if you hadnt pointed it out. Maybe yours is just more pronounced.

Id suspect that BB would hook it up on their bench first and if they see it too they would just order you another one to exchange. I suggest you do that cause this monitor is definitely worth a little extra trouble to get hold of a good one.

Not there bro. Thats weird. You can see a little tab for where it would go but there is nothing there. Thats weird. Maybe Best Buy got a different model or something.

Just picked up two of these @ bestbuy for $165 each. Not sure if this is storewide, may have been since these were the last two they had and tucked away (not on display).

Damn, $165?!?! How the hell can they sale these things that cheap when theyre selling lesser quality, smaller screens for $200+?!

Picked up one to replace my ZR24W. Was tired of the AG coating. BestBuy for $200. Very pleased with it. If looking at it from off angles, some green/yellow tint, but nothing bothersome.

Very pleased, especially for the money. I'll get used to the 120 less pixels, but the AG coatings are just a huge turn off.

I didn't see it either on mine (purchased at Best Buy). Makes me wonder if it is under the tab or something, but I'm wary of poking around at it (and with the monitor hooked up and set up how I like it, its a pain getting back there to look). Or maybe it is somewhere else or not there at all. I think the latter, especially since I didn't get an audio cable.

I did find a solution, however, for still getting sound from a PS3 while still using HDMI for video; it involves using the HDMI connection for video and the composite connections (just the audio ones) for sound by using adapters for whatever you need. Or you can use the optical audio connection if your sound system supports it.

$165? That's a good price, I work at FutureShop and I paid $199 >.>
Is it the 2509b or m?

They are 2509b's, $200 was the price I came expecting to pay which is still a steal but once I got rung up it came up $165 each :D

Yup, $199 once again, regular $279. Judging from the thread, it sounds like everyone is happy with it. I might just get one for light games but mainly for light pp photography and work.

Its worth it. Im still loving mine months down the road. Still say, its the best monitor on the market dollar for dollar.

Get 'em while they last. My local Best Buy isn't carrying them anymore. Not sure if they'll get more in or not but they dont even list them on their website anymore.

I just posted as "sithren" in NCX's review thread at wecravegamestoo to say that I picked this up for $199 ($238 after taxes and recycling fee) at futureshop. Today is the last day of the sale.

Loving it so far. Kind of hard to give impressions right now as I literally just set it up. But, so far so good.

Sorry for the bump but thanks for the review. I purchased 3 of these based on your recommendation. While the colors and display modes are not as gorgeous as they were on my old HP 2207, the extra screen space and good price make them worth it, especially as I am running them in Eyefinity for 81 square inches of screen space :)

FutureShop was having a short sale on these for $190 so I ended up grabbing two thinking this model is near EOL, considering the "M" version is off BestBuy's site as mentioned. I'm wondering if these get cleared out for the same price or better I may pick up a couple more for the other computer and maybe a couple for the girlfriend.

Loving the extra screen space. Now I'm not sure if I can go back to a single monitor setup

Hate the easily scratchable glossy bezel and silver stand like my w2007 but for the current price and what you get it's great value for a non enthusiast user.

Still loving mine. Best monitor on the market dollar for dollar.
