How will Sony's poor financial condition affect PS4?

Last I heard they were talking about splitting divisions into entertainment and electronics.

World Wide sales of PS3 were 77 Billion, 360 was 76 Billion. I don't see PS4 taking a big hit anywhere.

Your numbers are ludicrously off if you're talking about units shipped/sold. You're saying that everybody on the planet has bought at least 10 PS3s and 10 Xbox 360s. If you mean revenue from system sales in USD, that's still ridiculous. Assuming $300 per system, you're saying there are about 250 million units sold. 77 and 76 million units sold seems more correct.

pretty sure everyone knew he meant million and not billion

They are owned by SCEA so that won't happen. Sony is restructuring which all businesses do, they are in far better shape than say an Atari. What matters is they have the resources to fully commit to the PS4. Their R&D was no where near what the PS3 was and the console will likely start turning profits shortly after release thanks to off the shelf chips.

Atari was in terrible, terrible shape. Sony isn't THAT bad off, not by a long shot. In fact, they're still probably in much better shape than SEGA was when they fell into a pit.

It's just that, between the three manufacturers, they're still the one in the weakest financial position overall.

Those are the shipped numbers for the PS3. They're skewed. As for SALES, the XBox 360 has still sold more.

that's because just about everyone who has an original Xbox or the 2nd hardware revision (falcon) has had to replace their console with a jasper or newer revision lol.... In reality Sony most likely sold more consoles....

They don't. If I recall Sony only gets royalties on discs. Sony does not own blu-ray.

It's about a $9 licensing fee per bluray player which the Xbox one is. It's about 8 Cents per disk. Sure, it's not a lot of money but it's still funny. A major reason Xbox 360 didn't have Bluray was because MS did not want to pay the licensing fees. The fee was much higher back when the 360 released as well. And yes, Sony owns a share of bluray. The licensing fees go to bluray association of which Sony is a founding/board member. Sony gets a cut of everything bluray related. .

All of you are missing the point. Total sales number of a console don't really matter that much. A FAR more important number is attach rate. Remember both Sony and MS lost money for a while on their consoles. However they get a licensing fee for each game sold. Also, third part publishers look at attach rates to see how likely gamers are to buy software. It's a very important stat.

Xbox 360 - 10.24
PS3 - 9.13

So the 360 is selling more games than the PS3 which is where the money is. Also, I know it's early into it's life, but this is why so many 3rd party publishers are avoiding the Wii U.

Wii U - 2.39
