How well does the AMD 5000 X2 Overclock?

I'm really interested in the AMD 5000 X2 now that AMD plan to offer it for $284. Anyone overclocked it yet? And if so, please post the juicy details...lol If this baby can do atleast 3.0Ghz, this is the best value AMD will have to offer...

A 5000+ is like a FX60, just half the cache! All for only ~290, or close to it :p ..... That is insane performance for that price.

The 5000 is starting to look like a really good deal.

I do believe it's looking like I'm going to go the X2 5000 route myself.

This maybe the next hot part for us OC's and modders..I'm looking at the cpu with the price cut HAAAAAAARRRRD    :D

I'm already going for it. Just sold my RAM, now I'm working on selling my motherboard and proc.

I can't understand why anyone would go from 939 to any AM2 processor, instead of going for a Conroe. But it is your money....

 Someone needs to go to the Intel forums.

I wonder when DFI is going to release the nForce 5 boards?

I agree. I used to be a big fan of AMD because of the performance/value their Opteron series of processers had to offer. I bought the Opteron 165 and couldn't be happier. However, right now it doesn't make sense to upgrade to a 5000+ when it would cost around $282 when a Conroe E6600 costs about $320+ after the release?

One reason I can think of is the availability and cost of motherboards.

E6600 will be price jacked, a lot. Likely 350ish minimum. PLUS there's not a single good conroe board. 965 is slow and all the 975 boards are junky.

939-->AM2 is probably a waste of money. But some of us don't need to upgrade our motherboards and RAM for these AM2 price cuts. And even if you do, there are sub-$70 motherboards available for AM2 that overclock well. You can't say the same for CD2 right now.

If AMD hadn't released AM2 at the start of the summer, they would be in a lot more trouble....at least now they have a DDR2 footprint on the market they can start pumping.

Here is another way of looking at it.

I can purchase a new AM2 board and ram that will be compatible with the K8L. Sure I can get Conroe as a damn good viable alternative, but considering AMD performance over the past few years I would rather take the gamble on buying components early and reaping the X2 5000+ deal.

The real kicker in this whole equation for me is the memory. Replacing 4GB of DDR3200 just plain hurts.

Furthermore, one could also buy a cheap AM2 rig now and upgrade to Conroe in 6 months when prices have settled and motherboards are more mature. And you don't have to buy new RAM at that point.

The whole point is to get DDR2, regardless of processor brand.

Its funny how this post I created turned into a conroe vs amd debate. All I wanted to know is how well this cpu overclocked...lol I have been and seen all the recent benchmark of the conroe. I know what it has done to amd 64 cpu, but I wasn't interested in that!! I was only interested how the AM2 5000 X2 overclocked!! So for those who feel so strongly about the conroe please post your opinion on a different post, better yet go to intel forum. On a side note..The DFI Lanparty AM2 590 SLI Motherboard should be release in August from what I have read around the net. That's the board I'm eyeing if I get an AM2 5000...

August works for me. Time to save the pennies.

There are NForce4 SLI AM2 boards for under $100, and NForce 570 boards for around $130. Try finding a 975X board under $150. More to the point, try finding ANY Core 2 compatible boards right now - it's all "Probably Compatible" and "Needs a BIOS upgrade". Unless that changes dramatically on the 28th, your choices in motherboards will be seriously limited.

It's damn hard to beat the GeForce 6150 boards for a low-end system, too. Building a Media Center box? GeForce 6150 board ($75, with HDTV out) and an Athlon 64 3000+ ($89) have got you covered. Want dual-core? The X2 3800+ is $169.

The X2 5000+ is around 10-12% slower than the E6600, and it's $20 cheaper. Even assuming that Conroe boards are comparably priced and that there won't be any price inflation on Conroe, there are still plenty of good reasons to go AM2.

So true...DDR memory ..off to ebay :)

YES! iv been wondering that for SO LONG. common lets see some DFI Lanparty M2 Supreme or something. damn that board is gonna own.

edit: yea there you go, CR said it all for me.

thats a rather dumb thing to say. it all depends on who you prefer. no offense man but do some research.

K8L will be supported on M2, and when its released will be primarily for M3. the only differance between the two is that M3 will support Hyperthreading 3. I believe, as many others do, that K8L will infact outperform Core2. I also believe that AMD already has tonnes of extra memory bandwith and as such wont benifit much from Hyperthreading 3. so AM2 seems like a platform that will be futureproof.

Intel and AMD are both a little stupid imho. Amd releases too many sockets, (imho 745 still has much to be suckered out of it) and intel, too many chipsets. Core 2 could use some more memory bandwith. but on the most expensive intel chipset 975X only DDR2 667 is supported, where on the cheaper chipsets, DDR2 800 is supported. who knows what Core 3 will need in terms of chipsets. imho buying an intel mobo is a crapshoot.

AMD AM2 is future proof for the next 3 or 4 years. Conroe is not. Only made to last a year. More new mobos if ya want to upgrade higher then a X6800 or to quad core. AM2 can take 4 cores, K8L, And AM3 cpus. I'll go with AM2 after all because of the great dual core EE prices. ANd I can have the same bloody board for 3 or 4 years and still have it support something. The price cuts changed everything for me.

This thread really defines how much these forums are beginning to suck. You cannot have a single AMD based thread without some Intel fagboy-nazi-propaganda-whore showing up and shitting all over the thread. I really thought the forums were seperated so that people can talk about specific hardware without dealing with bullshit guerilla marking.

Yea, it's a shame. I've never been to the Intel forums and don't plan on starting. Too bad they won't stay over there. Maybe several bans getting handed out would take care of that. :p

word!

I am really looking foward to the price cut, the 5000 seems like a vey good deal, altough i have a question, when can you say that you need a new cpu instead of a new gpu?

I mean i know that i have an old cpu 3800+ overclocked to 2700mhz, and a X800xl, i know that fear running at 1024x768 with all the eye candy gives me 30 fps (not so good). so i dont know which one i should buy, a AMD 5000 or 7900GT.

If you're looking for better gaming performance, it'd be a new GPU for you. 7900GT/x1800XT512 should be your options if you're looking at that pricerange.

If you're looking for better overall performance, specifically in multithreaded apps or in multitasking, then the 5000+ is the right choice.

Yep, I doubt he would see any difference with the higher processor speed.

Anyways I would buy the X2-5000+ if I was looking to upgrade, but I have my 3800+ overclocked to the X2-5000+ already and it's plenty fast for me, although I was looking at this thread cause I wanted to know how well the real X2-5000+ will overclock, as my 3800+ starts to crap out at about 2.7-2.8Ghz, highest I've got stable was 2753Mhz@1.45V, but thats to high voltage for my taste so I backed it down to 2600Mhz@1.3V.

sculelos: A lot of people live in fear of giving their CPU some voltage but they shouldn't.

AMD makes their chips tougher than most people think. Keep the heat down under full load and you should be OK for a long time.

I did some crazy experimenting with my s754 Venice core chip and learned a thing or two along the way. Click on the following link to read about the punishment it happily took:

The issue will be finding the X2 5000 AM2 in stock. When you do find one let me know.

Make that 25% slower and 1.8x more power consuming.
The E6600 OC easily to 3.2-3.6 while the 5000+ is more like a hit or miss on 3GHz.

What are those other "good reasons" to go AM2 if not brand loyalty ? ;)

I am a self proclaimed Conroe zealot here, but all the Conroe threadcrapping in the AMD forum is old now....

if ppl want AMD, good for them, its not like *anyone* out there hasn't seen conroe by now...

Instead of a 5000+, why arent more people going the opty 165 route? Especially people with 939 boards. If you get a good stepping, you can hit the same OC marks as the 5000+ OC'd with double the L2 cache. AAAAND you get to keep your mobo and ram.

That should bridge the gap between 939 and something that has a real advantage over it. Right now, AM2 doesnt have an advantage over 939 except for the hope of future proofing. But ddr2 is super expensive right now.
