I don't have any of those cute CPU-sized plastic boxes. I don't want the pins to get bent. How to do this?

Cut out a small hole with a sharp blade in a Styrofoam block, so that the Pins sit in, with the rest on the sides. Put a plastic on it and tape it to secure. That should do it
If not Styrofoam, then, use plastic packing that comes with GPU or something.
Find foam like the one comes from TV or monitor boxes to secure the monitor(the one like a snow flakes). And push the cpu slowly into the foam. I did it so many times before and never had problem.
go to a local computer store maybe a micro center or a computer repair business and see if they have any extra plastic cases
AMD packed their cpu's like this for years.Wow like Oldie said above most packing foam/Styrofoam is not safe! Especially pushing the pins into the foam!![]()
