Hey all

I recently upgraded video cards, and when I was removing my Geforce3,it was stuck in the AGP slot tight. I had to use considerable force to remove it. On the final yank, it came free, but went flying out of my hand and crashed on the floor. Both heatsinks on the memory came flying off. How do I go about re-attaching them? Some special goop?

Thanks in advance.

i wouldnt know how to reattach them, maybe epoxy, or a thermal pad of some sort.

but i gotta say. my condolences to the graphics card ;x
good thing it was only a geforce 3. handle with care next time

Good thing it wasn't a brand new 9800pro, reminds me to be careful removing my card :D

you can re-apply the sinks with artic-epoxy, dont use anything eles, Artic-epoxy is a pernament soultion, as removein them after will probely rip the memory off with it. You can get it and most computer online stores like SVC.com...

I have herd people have used regular heatsink paste with dabs of superglue on the cornors...but i wouldnt do it.

But really, you dont even need them, even if your overclocking the memory they dont really do anything worth wild...I would jsut leave them off. Yuor going to pay 5 bucks for the artic-epoxy and probely more in shipping....not worth it.

any chance that your AGP slot had a retaining device that you forgot about?

Did you test to see if the card is ok? I’m sure it can run fine with out memory sinks to see if it’s working properly. I’m guessing the memory sinks on your gf3 are just for looks anyway. So before you spend time and money on reapplying those sinks try to see if it’s working properly.

Thanks for the quick responses all.

It did not have a retaining device. Not sure why it was so tight, even though it had been in the motherboard for a couple of years. I actually replaced it with an old Geforce 2 I had kickin around and handed the machine to my daughter (a lot quieter now since the Geforce 2 doesnt have a noisy fan).

My new machine has a 9800Pro :)

I will try the card without the heatsinks. I just assummed that they served a purpose, but since the card will be going into a secondary machine, I'll throw it in, do some stress testing and see if it holds up. The most intensive thing it will probably be doing is as a secondary NWN/BF 1942 box when friends drop by to LAN.
