and do i need to apply a thin coat of AS5 in a small area to the base of my new heatsink when reinstalling everything

The AS5 should go on the core of the processor, not the base of the heatsink.

I's probably a good idea to rub a small amount onto the heatsink to force it into the small voids and cracks.

What?

I should have noted that that is IN ADDITION to the paste you put on the core. You're right about putting it on the core, but some people also smear a bit on the heatsink then wipe it off, just to fill the tiny imperfections.
