How to reformat Windows HD?

Recently, my computer has really gone downhill and is flooded with tons of useless files and running incredibly slow. I want to reformat my drive compleltely and start over again. But I did not partition originally so that windows would be seperate, therefore I need to reformat the Windows drive. I have the XP Cd when that needs to be reinstalled, but I cannot figure out how to reformat the drive because it will not let you since it is the windows drive. Someone please help. Thanks
 
First make sure all your files, e-mail and anything else that needs to be save is burned to CD/DVD moved to second HD or otherwise backed up.

Second make sure you have all your install CDs and codes for your software, as well as the install files /codes for downloaded programs.

Third Make sure you have drivers for all your hardware esp your network card (so if you forghet one you can do and download it)

Then restart your PC with the XP CD in the CD Rom Drive (you may have to make some BIOS Changes to allow this) and walk through the steps, delete the partition and install to the now clean HD (The setup program will re-partition and format the drive for you). You'll see what I'm talking about when you get there.
 
ive done everything except back up emails. How do I go about doing that? I use outlook express for all my school emails and would like to keep those but am clueless about how to do it. Thanks
 
OK this is going to sound confusing and crazy, but it works.

Note : I don't use OE and I'm doing this from memory so you'll have to roll with me and guess and figure a little.

Open OE and go to File - import - Messages and run throug the wizard until you get to where it is giving/asking you for a path select that whole path and right click and copy. Cancel out of the wizard

Open a My Computer Window and paste that file path you just copied into the Address bar, Those .dbx files are the files that hold your e-mail, go up one folder and just copy that entire Outlook Express folder to your backup media/medium.

Upgrade to Outlook... ;)

In Start->Run, type in:

c:\Documents and Settings\yourusername \ When that opens, do a search for Outlook Express. Within that folder will be one called Identities which should have a folder with the same name as your email username. Copy that folder to a CD.

Once your computer is up and running again, run OE and follow the happy sugar-crack coated wizard to create your mail account, close OE, then copy the folder you saved from above back into the same place in the new Windows install.
