and see what users are using with your board... there is ALOT of ppl using your board with different air coolers....
the trick is the have the lowest possible voltage to the cpu ... to keep the temps down. but at the same time keep it stable... alot of users use orthos to test.. if its stable for 4 hours + there is a very high chance your cpu at that speed is stable..some use Prime95 also...
The best system operation is when your memory runs on the 2:1 memory divider (Gigabyte calls it 2:1 other boards call it 1:1 /shrug)
you memory is factory specified speed of 667MHz
Here is the way you figure it.
cpu speed = FSB speed x mulitplier
memory speed = FSB x 2 (with 2:1 mulitplier)
Memory tends to restrict the overclock with your C2D, (more expensive C2Ds have higher mulitpliers which let you get by with lower speed memory.)
So a 333MHz FSB x 2 = 667 which is your stock memory speed, no overclock .
333 x 8 = 2.66GHz which is what your cpu will run at. a mild overclock.
As a starting point for your overclock a 333 MHz FSB with a 2:1 memory divider would be an excellent starting point. And probally you could do that with the stock cooler, might run a tad warm but very do-able. We will see how far you can get later, first establish a solid stable base.
OK so now, do a forum seach on DS3 there are about 900 posts that tell you the exact bios settings you need. Its pretty simple, dont get caught up in the older more detailed posts or posts with some strange problem, most of that has all been fixed.
Download and install the latest bios, do not use the windows or internet utility, download it, expand to floppy, reboot and hit del to get into the main bios screen, look at the bottom of the screen for the F key to update bios.
get a notebook and record you stock coretemp settings at idle (doing nothing) and then after running Orthos for 20 minutes.
go into bios and set FSB to 333
memory divider to 2:1
hit ctrl+F1 from main menu to allow detailed memory settings.
Manually put in the memory timings of your memory.
set voltage control to manual.
set Vcore to 1.35V
set Vdimm to +.2
set PCI frequency to 100.
see if she will boot and load windows.
Temps over 70C is too high, (but not deadly) if they occur shutdown and reduce your FSB to 300 try again.
run coretemp and record idle temps.
run orthos for 20 min and record load temps.
