Alright, I'm posting this here, If it's the wrong section, I do apologize & if you have to move it, thats fine..

K well I decided to upgrade my older single core processor to a dual-core. I posted here about a week ago asking what you guys thought n stuff, and I decided the second core would be of use......However now my problem is installing it...

As I stated before, my current rig is this:

AMD Athlon 64 - 3700 - 1024K L2 Cache (Socket 939) [90nm San Diego]
DFI LANPARTY UT NF4 Ultra-D (socket 939)
Corsair 2Gb XMS3200 Xtreme Pro C2 Series (4 x 512Mb) [TWINX1024-3200C2PRO]
250GB Western Digital
ATI Radeon X800XL - Radeon X800XL VPU w/256Mb GDDR3 & PCI Express x16 TVO
Enermax EG565P-VE FMA 535W ATX 12V Power Supply

Upgrading to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz / 1MB Cache / Toledo / Socket 939

Now I know that first and foremost I must update my bois, and I should probably update my video driver as well. I've read the dual core posting on how to 'optimize' your dual core, but my problem is installing it.

So yeah I'm kinda worries about this not overly but a small amount..
Does anyone know a place where I could possibly grab some screen-shots from or a walk-through of any kind. And finally is there anything else is should or need to consider before i start this update.

I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me here.

Just kidding. You will find this thread helpful.

If all goes well, Windows should recognize the new processor without any intervention on your part. Simply replace the old CPU with the new one, and install the updates described in that thread.

thats not my problem (not yet of course) my problem or concern is with installing it..
 
as in physically installing it, pull up on the lever beside the socket, drop the processor in, it only fits one way, lower lever and lock it when cpu is in place, apply thermal grease (if needed) put heatsink on. enjoy.
 
Do you mean the process of actually changing the chip.

1. Push the little black lever down on the heat sink to loosen the clips that hold it down and then push the clips off of their tabs.

2. TWIST the heatsink to break the bond in the thermal paste and pull it off.

3. Raise the lever on the side of the socket so that the CPU is loose in the socket and then simply pick it up out of the socket.
The reverse those instructions to install the new dual core CPU.

For chip alignment there is a mark on the corner of the CPU that will line up with a mark on the socket and remember the chip only goes in one way and if you have to push on it at all its not in right.

Just remember the most important thing is to relax and take your time and have fun.

Hopefully thats what you wanted.
 
The dual core optimizer was the only part of the installation process for which I felt your request for screenshots was applicable.

If you are using the heatsink that came with the new CPU no. There is already thermal greese on it and all you have to do is sit it on the CPU and clamp it down.

My dad came in to see if he could help(He is pretty good with computers) and ended up pulling the heatsink and processor out together. :eek:

Needless to say, I was a little unnerved. lol
Fortunately none of the pins were damaged on the old processor(I'm hoping to sell it). The new one is in and seems to be working well. As DeChache said, you shouldn't need anything extra unless you are not using the heatsink that came with your processor.

Looks like a Tiger Direct OEM processor. In that case you'll need to clean up the goop on your old heatsink with alcohol and get some thermal paste of some kind.
 
Yeah looks like you're going to need some arctic silver after all. Once you get the thermal paste, just look up on the tutorial on their site for application instructions.. they have pictures and everything...

DeChache's instructions are the ones you should closely follow for processor installation.

lol....next time you are in the mood to remove the heatsink i'd probably recomend turning on the computer for a little while to let the paste warm up a bit beforehand. i've heard that makes removing the heat sink quite a bit easier, and less of a risk in pulling out the processor along with it.
 
The trick is to lever the hsf to the side and not pull up, but to tilt it off. That's what I've found to work the best at least, never pulled one out of the socket yet :D
 
It looks like you are going to have to get some kind of thermal compound for your new CPU as others have said you must of boughten a OEM CPU.

You are going need to either get some Rubbing Alchol or get some Artic Cleaner when you order the Artic Silver.

i appreciate all the help, i'm going to look at getting some cleaner and seal tomorrow for sure.

i shouldn't have a problem removing the paste sine my computer usually stays on for most of the day.
but regardless i'll follow DeChache's instructions as best as i can and hopefully those tutorial pics clear up any further question...

if i do come across a problem, i'll be sure to bug you guys!

That depends. Some rubbing alcohol has other stuff in it besides alcohol and that kind is bad. But the Articlean is amazing, it'll remove thermal pads in a matter of seconds which would take like an hour of scrubbing with alcohol. It really does work way better, I was leery at first but figured I'd give it a try and now I'd never want to pop a heatsink without the stuff.

But since your cleaning off an old cpu you don't plan on using anymore, just use alcohol without other stuff in it ;) Unless you plan on cleaning off other cpu's on a regular basis to try different heatsinks or thermal pastes or anything like that.

Oh yeah, I'd suggest the Arctic Silver Ceramic paste. The long term stability of it is better than AS5, especially if you move your computer (Sometimes the seal that is created when the paste somewhat dries out will break from vibration with AS5) and it'll give about the same cooling performance while being less expensive.

Alright, I understand. I'll look at buying them both.

Dammit, I figured this to be an easy upgrade... looks like it's gonna take far more work then I expected.

Hey guys sry to bump my own thread but I found a few things that have been beneficial for me and i figured that they could possibly help someone else.

The 1st link DeChache found for me. it's a pretty solid walk through for using Arctic Silver, the do's & don'ts as you could call it.

and the second link that i came across was actually a video off AMD's web page which really helped me visualize everything since I've never opened or taken apart my heatsink before.

I found between the two of these I now nearly fully understand what I'm supposed to do.

*just a note, I found that I had to download the AMD Videos through 'Download Them All' the firefox extension since the video wasn't loading.*

I'm thinking about grabbing one of those x2 3800 s939s from tigerdirect as a cheap upgrade till next year. Do they have a tonne of stock on those? I cant get on until next month.
 
i'm not sure how much inventory they are carrying TomGreen to be honest, but i'm sure you shouldn't have a problem finding one, regardless of where you find it.
 
errr I've got another question lol i know.

however my question is whether or not i should invest and replace the stock HSF or leave it alone.
I would like to overclock the dual core when / after i get it installed correctly, however i'm not sure on how stable everything will be with my old 3700 HSF.

I'm usually pretty terrible at monitoring temps, but i've recently checked them out and they weren't TOOO bad but they weren't great either.



I've tried to read around on here and I've come across two possible heatsink replacements, one is the Scythe Ninja Plus REV.B and the other is the Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120. They both seem rather large and I have no idea if they would fit inside my Lian Li PC-60USB Aluminum Case.

I've just recently taken a closer look inside my case to find that two of my fans which are located near my hard drives aren't working at all. I suppose this could also be contributing to the higher temperatures inside my case, however they probably wouldn't effect the CPU / MOBO temp that much.

AND finally I'm going to attach some pictures of the 2 fans which don't seem to be working in hopes that someone with a keen eye could catch the problem. I'd greatly appreciate any help here guys. To me personally, in the 1st & 3rd pic, it seems as if the wire from the fan is connected to two LEDs on the front of my case, I'm not sure why that would be but the green chip has 2 small LEDS on it...

The two case fans that aren't working are contribuating to the high temp. Get those two fans running and I bet your temps will go down drasticaly. I would get tbat done before you put in the new CPU. I would also get your case dusted.

The stock cooler will be more than fine for your new CPU at stock but you are going to want something beefier if you want to OC it. The two heatsinks you have linked are both excellent choices.
 
If you nead el-cheapo 120mm's these are great. I just bought 5 from newegg bout week ago. :) btw I'm selling some 80s that might work for you. red and green.

I think i'm alright for the fans for the time being.

any idea tho on where they went wrong in wiring them? i really can't seem to find their mistake.

Wow, that's hot compared to mine!(See sig) Of course, I don't do much, but it rarely gets over 33C. The second core is about 30C and the first is only 25C right now and I'm browsing the web, listening to music, and downloading a file via torrent plus I have a system monitor running(GKrellm) with the disk, wireless, and free space status and the date/time and uptime. Of course I'm only running the cores at 1GHz since I don't need all that power right now. When I'm playing a fairly demanding game(StepMania or ZSNES. haven't had the chance to install anything better yet) it gets to about 35C or maybe 40C. My video card runs at a fairly constant ~45C and the 'Thermal Zone' stays around 40C though. Might get another fan and a PCI fan later to keep the rest of the case cool, since the heat-sink/fan seems to be handling the processor.

A fairly good fan for about $6 here. I believe you can trust that store. I've bought my computer, wireless card, video card, 1GB stick of memory, and new processor from them and haven't had a problem yet(computer and vid-card together, processor with memory separate, net-card separate).

I'm using my stock heat-sink and one 120mm fan that came with the case(Fairly cheep fan). The HDD is on the front of the case blocking any flow of air that might have existed and there is a port on the side of the case(Not the recommend approach, I know. That's how it came though).

Wish I could help with your fan problem, but I can't see a thing(Even with that high resolution). Sorry.

Those pictures aren't the best sorry. But the best advice I can give you on the fans is unhook and re hook them up. I know the fans in my case have to be connectd just right otherwise they wont work.

I know people that use a vacuum cleaner to clean out their cases and never have had any problems. I take mine out to the garage and use the air compressor. Or get a can of that compressed air stuff and blow it out.

When I have more time this evening, after work I'm going to try to see if I can't loosen or remove the hard drive case mounts so I can then try to re-connect the fans.

And I've figured out why my two cores are different temps. I forgot that there is a plastic thing that sits in front of the side port directing air towards the processor, and that it is only half over the processor fan. x.x

i know that both Ninja and the Tuniq would both do more then the trick for me.

i was just wondering what the difference was if any between the two??
or should i consider something else.

was able to trouble shoot the two fans that i had issue with.
i just plugged one of them into the 5th fan-slot on my mobo and actually kept the other on that green piece... boooted er up and the pair worked..
i also took the air-compressor to my case, and shes as good as new now Y@Y!

temps lowered by about 5-6 degrees.

BAHHHH go figure the day that both my arctic silver and my cleaner / purifier show up so that i can FINALLY install this dam processor, i pull some bonehead move and try to install a dfi utility driver and COMPLETELY eff-up my internet !

it nearly brings me to tears :( :(

if anyone is a genis-a$$ with internet issues / tcp ip issues / ethernet driver issues please msg me :D
