Downloaded the MIDI file and tried playing but the sound was kinda bland on windows media player.

I remember i used to use a yamaha XG (I think it came with Final Fantasy 7 PC) and lets windows play the midi files on that instead. The improvement was what made me collect midi files for a while. Unfortunately, it wasn't compatible on the newer windows so i had to discard it.

How do you change the midi on Windows 7? What application do you use?
 
I just load them into sequencer programs and assign the instruments manually :D

But apparently this works. (youll need a replacement soundfont obviously) It's made for vista so it should work.
 
I occasionally listen to some general midi files with Winamp and Edirol HyperCanvas VSTi running standalone with a tool called SAVIhost. This also needs a tool called LoopBe to create an internal midiport to transfer data between Winamp and SAVIhost. GM files from older games sound absolutely great with this setup.
 
Thanks, are there any midi synthesizers you can recommend? I just downloaded synthasia but it just uses the stock midi. Which means it's pretty much the same as using Windows Media Player.
 
Edirol HyperCanvas and Yamaha S-YXG50 both have VSTi plugins available and have very good GM instrument banks, so those would be my top two recommendations - the only downside is that they aren't free and since they are old products, it might be hard to find them for sale.

FluidSynth is a freeware synthesizer that uses soundfonts, it should also be supported directly by Foobar2000's midi plugin. You just need a decent quality GM compatible soundfont to go with the synthesizer, like Fluid Release 3.
