Iv got a new case for my pc for xmas. To save all the hassle on xmas day of changing hardware and such. Im gonna install all my new hardware, set up drivers, reinstall windows and leave it bare on the side. If precautions are taken. How long is it safe to leave my entire system caseless? Will only be from tomorrow till boxing day.

Is there anythin i need to kno? Like resting mobo on anti-static wrapper and such?

LoL, my server has been running caseless, just sitting on an old mobo tray on the desk for the past year.

Just keep it on something that isn't going to ground the board and you should be fine. Wood, cardboard, Anti-static bag, etc. are fine.

No cats.
My cat can personally tell you what it feels like to be shocked by an open 200 watt PSU. I know you're not going to have an open PSU, but hey, it might feel the same when the rip open a 12v line.

if you do rest it on an anti-static bag make sure to cut it open. the inside will protect hardware but the outside is still vulnerable to static discharges.

I've had one running for alittle over a year without a case, sitting on cardboard or an anti-static bag. I've also cut a few holes in a cardboard box and used that for a case as well.

all you need to know is...

watch out for kids and/or pets :)

Anti-Static bags don't do anything if the hardware is not inside the bag

I have my motherboard laying on the motherboard box and I been without a case for about 4 months and nothing has happened yet.

Probably a good idea to put your motherboard on standoffs/risers, instead of lying it flat against a box or desk, allows a little airflow around the back side of the chipset/CPU socket.

Older systems don't matter that much, but I wouldn't lay a new athlon or (perish the thought) an inferno P4 motherboard flat on top of an insulator like cardboard or a staticbag.

after its running a while check your temps, and add fans around the mobo if you need to, just be careful not to put it where you can spill stuff on it, because it isnt too nice.

The outside of the bag is a conductor. Putting a static bag between a board and the table could be bad when you power it up. Might as well use a metal plate.

hmm never really thought of that... I know anti-static bags work like faraday cages, so it would make sense that the outside would conduct electricity...
