Compared to a X1800XT or a 7800GTX?

Does have features that the consumre products (this generation) don't for example?

I wanted to ask this in the gaming forum, but I know you guys are more knowledgeable.

Cannot be compared for a few reasons, very different architecture (unified), is designed for one platform and has expensive EDRAM on the chip too.

I played with one earlier in the day at an EB at my local mall. Graphics are pretty good, but not "OMG, I can't believe it" good. The consensus among those around that had been/were playing with it was that the controller "sux" with this, I'd have to agree, though i'm sure you could get used to it or otherwise buy one from a third party that works for you.

The smoke effects were nice, but had this "pop into/out of existance" method that was very unrealistic. Clouds of smoke don't appear/disappear instantly..they fade in and out. I also saw some shimmering..... J/K... :p

lol shimmering

a lot of free play xbox360s are only to half the potential of the real xbox360...
before you ask me for a link, i saw this on a channel called bravo, and a programme called Gamer TV....

Mass marketing a product at only half its potential; that's a sure fire way to shoot yourself in the foot. In other words, I don't care what your tv told you, I don't believe it, MS isn't that stupid.

It is not a fault of Microsoft the problem with the demo booths is that they are often times setup incorrectly by the employees, which causes it to look much worse than it is supposed to.

No console evr shows it's true potential straight out fo the box, give it a year or so. Look how much DX9 has developed...

also don't look at the videos for games they show you. look at the actual gameplay in the video, They always prerender shots that they use for tv. there is always a big difference between what they show you in commercials (not actual gameplay. I can't count the times when people are amazed by the commercials and the games are horrible. just look at screenshots of games.

LOL thought PGR3 gameplay was CGI/pre-rendered stuff, then they showed the images with the mesh

I wouldn't worry about playing FPS's with a controller on the Xbox360. There are a few USB's ports on it, so keyboards and mice are on the way, I'm sure.

that little 10meg chip of EDRAM on the GPU makes the R500 a very stand alone GPU (free AA?)

Incorrect setup on a demo machine is not what the first quote alluded to. Let's look at it again.

See how he said REAL in there, that implies that the machines in the demo booths are somehow fake or incomplete 360s. That doesn't imply that the local Target has its screen at a bad angle or that the contrast is making the picture look bad due to human error.

But anyhow, this is off topic so I'll just chalk it up to a semantics issue and call it good.

not tons honestly, there havent been a ton of games that were true dx 9 games (none fully) but Far Cry was one of the first to use a lot of dx 9 effects, and it still looks as good as most games today

So which is better? Tell me the X1800XT is better...

To that I would say it doesn't matter.. Why? Because in a few months there'll be chips that outperforms and outfeatures both the X1800 and 7800.. That's why the PC graphics business rocks.

Now that card will cost you more than a whole xbox, but that's another story.

lol i spit up my coffee reading that. thanks for the laugh.

Looks like we are going to have to try this topic again. If you want to discuss the architecture of the R500, and how it compares/contrasts to R520/R4xx/NV4x/G70, then start another thread.
