okay, i've been the the arctic silver site many-a-times looking at how to do it, but its really confusing...does anyone know of a video or something? i'm getting my waterblocks soon, and i want to do it right and for the best cooling.

Thanks!

alex

use a credit card (or something alike) and spread evenly, its not that hard :)

but on arctic silver's site, they say put a dot about the size of half a grain of rice, and let the HS flatten it out. and seeing as its their product, I'd follow their instructions. I do this with all my chips and under .5"x2.

I did it on my 2.4C(no IHS) and I get better temps than if I spread it with a credit card.

yeah, i was always confused...but i'm afraid i'm putting too much...

so ur saying it yields better temps to let the HS flatten it out?

hmm...okay, well, if anyone else has any insight into this, please do tell

It doesn't matter too much if you spread it or let it smush out, but it is a little better to let it smush out because you end up with less air in there.

yeah, that would make sense...and it says like, what, a half grain of rice? is that reasonable? i don't really look at grains of rice...lol

well, im guessing you havnt eaten rice before?

put something down about the size of a broken pencil tip or the size of one of the chips on the back of the processor.

The photo on thier site in the instructions shows the amount needed.

not for the "small core processors" just for the ones with the IHS...so, should i still just put a tiny little "plop" :p of paste and let it smooth it out?

i don't know about you guys... but i tried to use the "plop and let the HS smooth it" technique, well my temp went up 4C with AS5 compared with using arctic alumina

i removed the HS and apply the spread with razor blade technique, got lower temp with that.

note: maybe its because i've lapped my HSF?

If you lap your HS you only need to put the smallest amount on, almost so its like a haze.

Alex, there are pics there for the small core CPUs - they suggest using your finger inside a plastic bag to spread it, or ive used a latex glove to do the same. Just put a small amount on your gloved finger and spread it carefully over the exposed core. For the IHS chips, its much better to use the blob in the middle method.

doesn't latex have a powder residue type of thing on it.. wouldn't tha be bad?

as far as i know thats only on the insdie of the glove...putting a plastic bag or even saran wrap(yes ive done it and had no problems) over your finger works like a charm for me. ive put AS5 on just about every heat source/core in my computer by putting a tad on the core itself and making a "PB&J Sandwich" type look to it...although a whole lot smoother and in a thinner amount of course ;) works like a charm as far as im concerned. my 9800Pro goes to 435 core and my mobile barton does 2500MHz without too much of a sweat. i would say just go with whatever method you feel most comfortable with doing and go that route.

yeah, considering i dont have a steady hand, i guess i could try spreading it out...i'll be careful though...thanks guys for the help!
