A friend is paying myself and another friend $100 each to make him a computer. So, the $2500 he has, minus the $200 for myself and my friend, leaves $2300. I've been surfing Newegg and this is the parts list I came up with:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe
Asus 802.11b wi-fi mobo adapter (why the hell not eh)
ATI Radeon x800 Pro (when they come back in stock on Tuesday)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
2x Corsair XMS PC-3200 1gb sticks (yes, a whopping 2gb of ram)
WD Raptor 36gb SATA drive (system drive)
Seagate 160gb 7200rpm SATA drive (everything else)
Cooler Master Centurion CAC-T05-UW (his personal choice)
Lite-On Black SOHC-5232K
Sony Black 1.44mb Floppy Drive (incase it's ever needed)
Antec True550 (if it comes back in stock, if not the one right below that)
Total is around $2100, which with tax and shipping should come out to just about $2250 or so.
Does anyone have any alternate recommendations for a system? I was first going to go with an Athlon FX-based system, but the motherboard I wanted for that went out of stock, along with the fact 1gb of registered ram is extremely expensive, and it also seems the 3400+'s preform pretty damned well compared to the FX's, so this seemed like a good alternative. Plus, it allowed me to bump the ram up to 2gb, which should last the entire life span of this computer.
No overclocking will be done, so the default HSF should be fine, right? Or do you guys recommend that I buy a different HSF anyway, just incase? And if so, what one? I'm not really sure on Socket 754 HSF's.
