How does the 9800XT...

The 9800XT was a very nice bit of kit in its day. But sadly, thats passed. :(

Well look at it this way; the X800 was about 1.6X faster than the 9800XT, the X1950 is also about 1.6x faster than the X800, and that's about 2.56 faster than a 9800XT. The cards are more like 2x faster each generation though.

Had a 9800XT myself, struggles @ 1280x1024 with any AA. But does decently with no AA and maxed settings..

I have a 9600PRO, and I am able to run settings mainly at high, with 16x HF at 1280x1024 with pretty much no drops in frames. Around 40-60 usually.

Dude you are full of crap cause I can barely play at that those settings with an X800XL overclocked without lagging.

Yes, I totally agree. The guy probably only played for 5 minutes. The fps CS:Source is never stable, it fluctuates in very wide range. When running around by yourself the fps is way higher then in a big gun fight. The number of players will also highly affect the fps. I bet in 40 player server, his fps will dip below 20 if not in the single digits.

lol I didnt want to say anything but yeah, unless he was running in directx7 mode.

Hm... Well, I could be wrong... I can run the benchmark if you want me to... I generally play with 8-16x AF, no AA..... Let me go check.

edit
Can't check right now, as it's my brother's steam account and he's not here right now. I don't know his password.

Yep, my old machine, which is now my kid's machine is a Mobile Barton 2.6Ghz and a 9700pro and it gets good fps at 1280x1024 high settings in CS:S.

With Source you need more of a CPU then a GPU.

I get 140 FPS with full settings at 1280x1024 in CS:S. I don't see any reason why a 9800 or 9600 couldn't pull at least 40.

For CS:S it'll be fine. The guy posting about the 9600 can't be right unless, like someone else said he's running in DX7 or 8. I know, I had a 9600 Pro. I also had a 9800 Pro flashed to XT speeds, it did great with Source-based games, as well as Doom 3, Far Cry and BF2. FEAR absolutely killed it though. The poor card never even had a chance in FEAR.:(

The video stress test I got 37fps with Trilinar AF, all settings on high, no AA 1280x1024
30fps with 8x AF, all settings on high, no AA 1280x1024... ingame, fraps says "Avg: 46.685 - Min: 0 - Max: 286" So an average frame rate of 47 fps...(8x AF in multiplayer)

You have a weak CPU and the CPU is king in Source.

My 9800 played CS:S and HL2 just fine for me at 1280x1024 with 2x aa 4x af.. But yeah it gets blown away by the Ati 8xx, 18xx, 19xx, and the Nv 6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx series cards.. It was a great card for it's day though..

My observations on my last few vid card upgrades in CS:S went like this:

9700 Pro -> X800 Pro - Small increase in image quality large increase in framerates.

X800 Pro -> X1800 XT - Big improvement in IQ (SM 3.0 support, HDR, 6x MSAA, 16x AF, all details on high) with zero noticeable slowdowns.

Like PNut said, it was F.E.A.R. that did in my 9700 Pro. It just couldn't handle it. :(

Thanks guys. This card is going in a dual 2600 system. What's the next step up? X800XT?
