How do you fund your fold?
I'm limited to stealing beer money. And that's for O'Douls.
I've got one borg worth about 100ppd with a son. The rest are excess cycles at home.
I'd like to start doing some GIS work that would require a stable of quads to flip bits when a job comes in. And fold like the dickens when I'm waiting.

Now I know there are a lot of dedicated peeps going to the poor house heating their domiciles with quads.

But has anyone found a legitimate "nice" way to fund the fold?
Such as :
Renting cycles to a rendering farm?
Searching for oil in Vermont?

It could give a tax break.

Well.... SmokeRngs man whores himself out to fund his farm.... and I'm starting to think that it might not be such a bad idea... I am stuck with a teachers salary:p

I've been pretty lucky with my borg, it's free, and without it my production would be less than half of what it is now.

Maybe try and get the word out, you never know who might be willing to let you borg a machine here or there....

EDIT.... see what I mean?

Do you really fund and addiction? :p

I just do it bit by bit.

I did get my bonus and a nice tax refund, that's been the latest build out.

I steal the milk money from my children and their friends.

I sell pictures of GoatS doing the nasty.

I steal toys from neighborhood children and force them to buy them back from me at "special" rates.

I recently quit my job in order to pursue a degree while I still have GI BIll eligibility. My funding is limited to couch surfing for change and collecting empty bottles for deposit. Not going so well so far. But soon.....

Don't smoke, don't drink, don't go out, and I'm single with no dependents.

Dependants. The fastest way to kill a good hobby. Always wanting to eat and thinking they're entitled to thing like clothes and shoes. The nerve!

Very true. I look at my brother and I don't understand how he does it. I'm thankful I never had any dependents, but then I've been single 99% of my life so it wasn't difficult.

That's why I manw[H]ore, or at least one reason I do it. I smoke, drink, occasionally go out and have a kid to raise so money is something I definitely don't have an excess of.

Actually, the kid is a damn good excuse for having at least two extra rigs. One rig for his normal use and a second extra one just in case the first goes down. That's after my main rig, fileserver and several spare systems for my own system. :D Sure, he costs money, but what the hell.

The kids will kill ya.... my three boys are going to land me in the wonderful world of bankruptcy before it's all over with;)

They all have boxen of their own, and they fold, but they seem to think that computers are for doing homework and playing games?

Already playing the kid's computer and spare computer cards. They're getting a bit long in the tooth though. Also used the kid to justify the PS3. :D

That's one of my excuses also, but the live in son games 27 hours a day and I made the mistake of asking him in front of SWMBO if he'd like a quad for his birthday, if he'd fold.
He said no. Kid's got some lessons coming

He said what?!

I have a cousin that is begging me for a "gaming computer" for over a year. He has to get good grades first before his folks will let me give him one.

IMO thats a fanfriggingtastic' excuse SmokeRngs and it sounds like your a good "role model" for your child. I always knew "crumb snatchers and curtain climbers" were worth something (only kidding) Not being all that experienced with children (some say I've been lucky) I heard they're gonna' cost you money one way or the other anyway, so why not spend it on folding for a cure. :D

Please no. I've been to MPC and I've seen things. Horrible things. This could be all it takes to push me over the edge. :(
Really? What horrible thing have been happening over there? And, when are they going to ramp??

The pre-ChimpChallenge smack talk. It's taking ugly to a completely new level. :D

And ramp? They better pull another rabbit out of their hat soon. That trendline is going the wrong way.

Yeah, I saw that recently. Geez, all that talk of ramping at the beginning of the year and it was we who ramped without even really intending to!

Of course not. I have it on good authority that SmokeRngs is quite a handsome man. I just have no desire to see graphic evidence of him earning his pay. :D

There's a reason why I usually go with the drunk women.

It's because they are much more free with their money. :D

And there's actually a picture or two of me on the forums.

Well, Linux is a bit faster but why bother installing a new OS just to try it out? Install it in the OS you're currently using and give it a trial run.

well i have Gentoo installed in my box along with XP and Vista, so no problem there. I´ll still have to do my homework though, and read about all that stuff

Right now, I'm working as much as I can. For instance, today, I just got back from doing a 14 hour shift. Yeah I'm tired but what the hell, the overtime I'm going to be getting this week is good money. At least I'm going to be "killing" myself earning hard and cold cash so that I can fund my farm as soon as possible and then hopefully purchase five to ten rigs by early-mid May sometimes so that I can have some of my farm up and running and then the rest got to come sometime soon at one point.

Not to hijack this fun thread -
But does anyone run THEIR machines at HOME to earn legitimate money, and thus allow them to qualify for a tax writeoff?

For instance - do a CPU intensive render job for $500 and writeoff a quad core machine for $400.

I'm working on selling custom computers! I do plan to try to write off the computers as demos. I have ads in craigslist and will put some ads on ebay. 999.99 for a quad custom built + $$$ for your choice of video card!

So yep this time is burn in time and testing time as I try to sell them.
