I want to know how I read this stepping for a Q6600.

L720A394

I think there's L720A37x also in the batch, does it make a difference?

I noticed the ones with the 94 at the end have a rougher IHS.
While the ones that end in 7x have a smoother IHS with a more ledgible laser engraving.

How can I visually determine the stepping identification information on the x86 microprocessors?
Stepping information is contained in the lot code identifier that is in the second line of the marketing on the topside of the chip. The second line marking is referred to as the Intel® FPO# (finished process order) and is an eight digit number. The lot code identifier and Intel year and workweek the finished product was manufactured can be viewed by referencing the following FPO# guide:

X- X- XX- XXXX
Test Site -Year -Work Week -Lot code Identifier

Example: FPO# L209555A - indicates the product was produced in 2002, in Workweek 09 and the stepping would be "A".

So does that mean this is a 2007 stepping A chip?

I should probably wait a couple of weeks and see if I can find a G stepping right?
 
The current revision B3 Q6600 quad processors have

sSpec Number: SL9UM

on the outside of the box.

If you are waiting for one of the new G0 stepping processors then don't buy it if it has the above number on it.

Edit: After a day of Googling I finally figured out that the new G0 stepping Q6600 is supposed to have a sSpec number of: SLACR but it is not yet on the Intel web site.
