Just wanted to join the folding team. I'm in the military (Ft. Hood,TX) and don't get to use my system alot, with all the training missions and what not. I cant seem to goto www.hardfolding.com is the site down...or is the folding team done????? Thanks. :(

first download folding@home

if you have that installed, configure it so your username is your hardforums username and your team number is 33

boom thats all, its veyr easy to configure( the screen pops up when you first start it)

fold away!

The Hardfolding site is under repair at the moment, it will be back. You need to download the progy, here is the link:

http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/

Click on Download and as a rule most folders are using the no nonsense console version. Place the file in a folder called “fold” or something like that. Go to “Run” and browse to your new folder and run the .exe with the following switch. C:\Folding\FAH502-Console.exe –config. There is a space between the .exe and the switch. Add your folding name, your team 33. Most of the default settings will be fine, so just enter through the rest until the program tries to connect. Do a Ctl+C to close that window.

On your desktop make a shortcut to that folder and .exe file and it should look like this with an added switch

C:\Folding\FAH502-Console.exe –forceasm

Double click your shortcut and your folding.

Welcome aboard, enjoy.

Hooah!!!! thanks for joining.
Glad to have more military people around.

First off, thank you for your service to our country. Now that you've joined our F@H team thank you for your service to humanity.

I don't know but I've been told
Folding Gromacs can get old!

If you see a tinker core
Hope you get a whole lot more!

Count off!

The [H]orde is [H]ardOCP's folding@home team (well I believe UD is included too) To join, just D/L the folding@home client and join team 33. that's all there is to it. It will not affect your gaming or other PC activities as F@H uses only idle cycles. It's a win-win situation

i dont get the point...

Donate unused CPU cycles to help out medical research, and score points for the [H]ard|OCP team in the process. You can read up on the Folding@Home program at http://folding.stanford.edu .

If you've heard of SETI@Home you have an idea of what distributed computing is about. If you haven't then... Google is your friend . We at the [H] choose to let our computers look for cures to diseases rather than search for little green men.

I cant seem to goto www.hardfolding.com is the site down...

www.hardfolding.com will return as soon as the server is brought back online, I haven't been given an estimated time, sorry.

The [H]orde is [H]ardOCP's folding@home team (well I believe UD is included too)

Actually to set the record straight The [H]orde was invented by the UD team when we broke into the UD community, our recon team warned the UD teams "Beware the [H]orde Cometh!!!", after that both teams started using it. Before that time we were known as the [H]erd for all the elep[H]ant dumps we placed on ARS's Genome@Home lawn, and before that we were just known as Team [H]ardOCP.

Its basically a distributed computing project to help research different diseases like cancer, alzheimers, mad cow, etc. to find cures.

Check out http://folding.stanford.edu. They have all the info about the project itself there, and benefits from it. If you do decide to join, make sure that when you set up your folding client, you put in 33 for the team to join the [H]orde! :)

I read this thread in interest if joining also. I joined, and I'm wondering how long it takes to get onto the stats page. Could someone inform me?

Thanks.

Once you run the program and download a work unit (WU) it take anywhere from a few hours to several days before the WU gets returned to Stanford. Once you've returned your first WU you'll show up on Stanford's stats page http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Chugiak (just sub you folding username in place of Chugiak to see your stats) Stanford servers do have a bit of lag before you can see the stats, anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

Once you return a WU you'll also show on the [H]ard|OCP folding team page here. But that is a long list and takes a while to load :(

Ok, thanks.

Also, is it possible that Folding@home isnt sending the information out (i.e. can it run without an internet connection)? I wouldn't think so, but I'd like to know.

The program needs internet access to fetch a work unit. Once it has a work unit it doesn't need the connection again until its rerady to turn in that unit and fetch another one. With typical systems and work units that's about once per day, maybe longer interval.

Edit: a big work unit can take days to process, and it may only show progress at 1% intervals, so you could be running the program for upwards of an hour and not see any progress.

The hardest part about being new to this, is waiting for that magical first unit to show up in the stats.

Then you get addicted to seeing the next folder ahead of you and saying " I can get them, just one more unit and I move up a position."

Then you see a friends computer and get it to fold, using your name, and your points go up faster, then more, then a farm, It gets addictive to watch your boxen work you up the ladder ;)

And team tradition is we blame it all on Relic, :D
and you can hug our moose :D

we have a good time here and are doing a very good thing in life, if you need help or have questions, ask away freely.

We always will get you pointed in the right direction BEFORE we hijack the thread. :D

Welcome to the [H]orde.

It forces the core to use the SSE boost on a Gromac.
If the core shuts down unexpectantly/ incorrectly due to a crash/ power cut when it restart it runs without SSE boost.
This slows it down to half speed untill you restart it properly.

For the switch to work with a service install I think you need to edit the registry.

Luck.......... :D

i think i will just wait for a while to try that then. i don't feel like editing the registry without knowing what key to edit.

Hmm, I've run FAH for about 24 hrs now on two computers, but I am not on the stats page yet. Does it normally take this long to get on a list of the top 4000? And yes, I have joined team 33 and inputted the correct username.

Sounds like the site was down yesterday so stat refersh may be taking longer than usual.

Actually, IIRC, within the service properties for your folding service that you set up in firedaemon, there should be a box for "parameters". If you are running the console version of Folding, then check the box for "Console application" and then enter your modifiers in the parameters box. Always worked for me when I used it.

Actually, maybe take a look at this link.

<----Thanks xENo

i tried that before and it didn't work. worked this time though

Does anyone still do SETI@home? I'd like to do that as well.

You guys were right, it is an obsession.

heh. ain't that the truth :p

imho:
1) choose the "no nonsense console" version, copy the file to a directory like winnt or folding or whatever (not your desktop :D ) and run it.. enter your info and choose YES to running it as a system service at startup. .. after you go through all of it and it downloads a core hit ctrl+C to exit, restart and BOOM you are folding all the time the system is on, with no black box or anything.
1a) (of course you should do this once your comfortable with folding 24/7 .. but it gets in the way of very nearly zero things (I've bumped into one java compiler that it gave fits, and that is it in like three years and lots of random machines). .. in case you're wondering it'll slow the machine less than your AV on average, and great fun to get points, and strike back at all sorts of (^$#@ bad stuff.
2) carl I <3 my KVM. WOW am I glad I got this.
3) somebody should get me some nachos. I'm really got a craving.

Hmm, I used to fold, haven't in a while... I stopped around the time the team started getting split and some were doing UD and whatnot (think F@H was going thru a transition of versions), yes it's been a few years. Anyway, I plan to install it on the new rig I'm building (A64 3000 90nm)...

I notice EM (Electron Microscope) isn't mentioned as much anymore. Is it still being updated or does it still work? I liked being able to click on it to see what was going on and stuff, was a nice proggy. I didn't even run WinXP when I used to fold... Are there any issues with scheduled tasks such as HDD backups/defrags or anything that F@H would interfere with?

Anyway, I've got a few links saved up for when the new install is done, I guess I'll get to reading then and install it.

EMIII is still around and is talked about every few weeks... always recommended to the new guys... The Weatherman just released a new version about a month or so ago... works great.....

Scheduled tasks shouldn't both it much... but... defrags, if I remember right (been awhile since I've done that), don't like anything to use the hard drive during it's process..... so you may have to stop F@H to do one... I never defrag my computer (unless it's horribly bad...) with todays PCs you don't really notice much of a speed change......

Keep on Folding!!

Well im folding, nice to be doing it again. I used to be with team AthlonXP.com. H ad some major disagreements with thier host company. Thaks all !!! :D
