a guide i was wiriting, and i made a discovery, so this shoudl be intristing

A duron 850 is old, but still usable. Many of you guys would use this laptop as a folding rig, but i use it as a rig for school. I recently heard a very bad noise coming from the laptop. This noise i was hearing was the cpu fan filled with dust, and i decided to take a few hours out of my day to reseat teh cpu in my notebook. I decided to go ahead and tear my laptop apart,

First i went ahead and removed the Ram from the notebook
To do this i went ahaead and removed the 2 screws to the cover for ram slots, and pulled out the ram

picture2365large0dl.jpg

picture2366large9cl.jpg

After this i went aheaad and screwed all the screws out of the holes on the bottom

Note: Also unscrew the screws in the back of the laptop including the ones by the screen

After this i went and tipped the screen completely back like this
picture2368large4sq.jpg

After this you have to pry open the panel whare the power button and all the quick launch buttons are at.

Pull off this board, and disconnect any wires leading to the screen, and do not mess with the dip switches as they affect the type of display you are using

picture2436large9fe.jpg

After this pull the keyboard out and disconnect it

After you do this, unscrew the screws that hold the monitor onto the notebook

picture2430large3yp.jpg

After you unscrew the monitor, pull the tap pad and plastic off, and the 2 connectors that go with it for audio and power for the front lcd, you may need to unscrew a few screws, and thare is a ribbon cable for the tap pad itself

After this, you need to go ahead and dissasemble the metal support surrounding the laptop, and you may need to take out the HDD to take this off
picture2376large4vx.jpg

Thare are a few screws that hold this together

After this, i tore off the hs/f to check the CPU
picture2414large2sb.jpg

I had to unscrew these screws when i discovered the one screw kept turning as if nothing was connected to it when i cought this

picture2391large9hr.jpg

While, all and all it is best buy who did this when my notebook was serviced 2 years ago under their warranty,

The notebook would smell funny, and they replaces the cooler, apparently, they overtightened the screw, and cracked it off, i in the meantime glued it back with epoxy, and now am contacting bestbuy corprate offices to notify them of this. I will make shure to tell everyone i know to take thare pcs, and buy thare pcs anywhere but bestbuy, reminding you, my family tends to spend a shitload on electronics, xbox 360s, ps2s, psps, headphones, hdtvs, monitors, cameras, and laptops.

More to come soon

Well, for the last 2 years it hasn't seemed to have affected your laptop in any way. You seem to have been using it just fine. Now, I am not saying what best buy did was a good thing, but how can you be sure it was a best-buy tech who did this? What did the laptop go in for in the first place to where they would have to mess with the processor?

I think you are making too much of a fuss for a little thing, but enjoy being put on hold.

I think it's gonna be more hassle than it's worth to get anything out of this by contacting Bestbuy. If it was a BB tech though, that is a really irresponsible thing to do.

yes, it was getting really hot, and the hs/f on it broke, fan went out, and also, it went in under warranty, so they should cover it

actually, for the last year and a half, the thing has ran like shit

you should think about getting your electronics online, its cheaper.

bestbuy doesn;t employ the best techs, which is why many avoid their extended warranty's

If you need good tech service, try a PC Club if you have one nearby

I'm not real big on PC Club but they are a lot better than Best Buy!

.....

Bump for some interesting reading and a test of my broadband connection......

I hate to say it, but I doubt Best Buy will do anything for you. It has worked fine for the past two years and there is no solid evidence that anything Best Buy did caused the computer to stop working immediatly.

I actually work on the geek squad @ a best buy and as far as i can say for my store we're all pretty knowledgeable....except for the one guy that mounted a board in a case without using standoffs.... he was fired =P

Anyway, for something like that it's not fixed in store, most anything other than harddrive or memory issues with laptops it's shipped back to the vendor where they fix it and mail it back to us...so it wouldn't have been a best buy tech who had been that deep inside the laptop

They did this 2 years ago and you think you can do something now? waheahe

Don't blame best buy as a whole cuz one of their employees messed something up and left it. The screw has nothing to do with your laptop running like garbage. What would you do if you broke the head off some cheap screw? Tell your boss so he gets pissed at you? Try to pull it out and break the laptop? Have the entire laptop replaced cuz you broke the head off of a little screw? Im not saying its right im just saying its not like he used peanut butter for thermal paste.

You should have brought it in a year and a half ago then

I think exactly the same, if the laptop started to run weird after the bestbuy service, why didnt you take it back to store?

i did, they said it was normal,. and mind you, i wasant computer hardware savvy at all

Well, now that you are apparently computer savvy, what exactly did this broken screw cause your laptop to do to be deemed as “running like shit.”

I disagree with some posts here. When you repair something from Best buy (or any other place who promises you a professional service) they shoud do a "professional" job. If they broke something inside a computer (where customer cannot see it) they should replace it with a new part. That's what you call honest customer service. Or at least they should inform the customer about it and offer something to replace the damage. That's what I think.

Thank you

I totally agree with you, and i contacted them, and i got no response, i plan on calling agian later after i manage to return and excange my xbox 360

One day I was in my local Beast Buy and I saw an old (former) friend working behind the tech counter. I didn't actually go speak to him to find out what was going on, since things... well, that would just cause trouble. But he was never exactly the most tech savvy of the group. I mean... He knew how to USE a computer and was pretty decent with video editing, but... A computer tech he was not. The last time I had spoken to him wasn't that long ago, so I honestly have to wonder... HOW THE FUCK STUPID IS BESTBUY FOR HIRING HIM!?

And then people wonder why I tell them to bring their non-warranty repairs to me instead...

Because smart people hire for attitude/personality and teach skills. Anyone can be taught to do the work that the BestBuy techs do, which is install memory, replace broken fans, etc. Any serious work is done off site. Your post make you look lame, tbh, might want to edit it to make less of an ass of yourself.

I totally Agree, I run a small pc business fixing computers, I would rather fix it right the first time than have to keep fixing it later down the road even if it came from the same customer.

Since it is under Warranty, Bestbuy or the company they send the pc hardware to should have it fixed. That is why we have warranties on this stuff, if it breaks within the contract it must be fixed or a replacement must be sought.

And what is the first thing most of the b&m places will tell you when you bring in hardware. Or when you tell you what is wrong, Oh that's normal. An excuse of not wanting to look at it. Instead of taking it to fix it, and getting it back to you the same week or day.

And also seeing all the posts here, hey guys think about it, we were in the same place the Op was at in one time in our lives, something broke within the warranty period and we requested it fixed or replaced. It's no different here in this thread, like many others who make these threads we will show pictures of how we or the companies that sell computers screw up sometimes. Asking the same questions or different questions, wishing that someone in the same boat or past experience would know an answer or a solution to this mess.

Now, I don't work at bestbuy and don't have a clear answer of what they will tell you. And for many others who post here, if you don't work at bestbuy or do it yourself, answer the question professionally, w/o blaming whos at fault.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the repair. Someone mentioned earlier but Best Buy or Best Buy employees don't repair laptops and the only thing they can repair/replace are memory chips or harddrives. If the laptop was sent off for repair it went to either the manufacturer or a third party certified laptop repair center. Now I am not saying Best Buy should not step up to the plate and take care of it if it was indeed done by them or one of their contracted service centers. But who is to say you weren't taking it apart like you showed in the pictures and damaged it yourself? Interesting question and then you are going to use Best Buy to get it fixed.

As for the technicians or whatever you want to call them that work at Best Buy, they do alot more than just "install memory, replace broken fans, etc." They have to troubleshoot and repair the full range of software sold in the store and work miracles if you talk to customers.

If you do finally get ahold of someone, my suggestion is be calm and present your case in a nice and professional manner. If you don't I can tell you where you will get cause it is the same place people got when they started cussing and hollering at me. NOWHERE! If the person was nice and professional and treat me with some respect, I would bend over backwards to help them out. Remember this cause it will help you along the way. If not have fun, hollering but don't do it in the store cause they do have the right to have the cops escort you from the building. (I have seen it done several times)

???

OK,

i have gotten kicked out of a bestbuy for the manager calling me a retarded asshole, and i was not happy

long story

they broke my copy of gta3 when my ps2 cdrrom stopped working, and they hammered it open and the cd got fucked up

anyway, i wouldnt be dumb enough to do that, and they did send it out definitly,

Maybe I'm just lazy, but I tend to take the path of least resistance. Wouldn't it just be easier to replace the damaged parts yourself and learn from your experience instead of spending a ridiculous amount of time getting no where?

Think of all that time you could be spending doing something constructive....like taking a dump.

Have you ever shopped at a Best Buy? Have you ever worked in a retail tech shop? There's one guy at my Best Buy that has a brain in his head. He's my brother's best friends older brother. He knows how to build and repair systems in his sleep and knows his shit. He's constantly complaining about how the techs at the beforementioned Best Buy know jack, and how half the stuff comes back due to "malpractice". I'm sure this doesn't apply to all Best Buy stores, and I know we have some quite competent people right here on the [H] that work for Best Buy, but Jesus, I do know what I'm talking about. I worked at CompUSA as a tech and watched other techs literally blow machines up (ever force a molex connector in the wrong way and end up with scorch marks on the bench? THAT was "fun" to witness the aftermath of that technical genius) because they don't know what they're doing. I was a computer science major at William Paterson University and watched the kid next to me use the hunt-and-peck method while typing up his assignment for ASSEMBLY PROGRAMMING, and he ended up with a good grade after copying everybody else's assignments! These are the "professionals" that this world's best training are churning out. I've worked in companies with IT departments (which I was not a member of) that couldn't install printer drivers while following instructions on-screen.

No, I haven't met or witnessed the work of every tech on Earth, but, unless I've got really shitty luck, I'd like to believe that I've witnessed a decent sample of tech stupidity. Enough to never EVER recommend that somebody bring their computer in for repairs to a tech department which I'm not familiar with.

nope, im homeschooled atm, so i have a ton o time, and i am writing a book, so i have ideas coming

I'd believe it. They don't hire the people with passion for tech. They hire the people that will take their paltry payrates. Any decent tech should EASILLY make DOUBLE what Best Buy pays (and I have this information based upon my beforementioned contact within Best Buy and his personal experience of being an underpaid tech who quit because he was making more selling on the floor and getting spiffs).

just wondering: how is this an AMD-CPU related question or post? It seems that the major content is about Best Buy.

Actually, if anything, this should be in Mobile Computing, since a lot of it has to do with disassembly of a laptop.

You said that this was a Duron 850? I'm trying to remember if the Duron 850 had the on-board temperature diode... I don't think so. However, I'd imagine the board has a diode underneath. Ever get a temperature reading using MBM? If so, what temp was it running at?

i know only 1 proggy worked, hw monitor

I torn between sides...

On one end, BestBuy did not do a good job of notifying you. But even if they did, replacing an entire system board just for a single screw is not justifiable.

On the other end, it sounds like you're just trying to get a new laptop. It has been two years, and your laptop has been working fine despite you saying it ran like cow turds on a hot summer's day. You mention you were not computer savvy two years ago -- when did you become computer savvy? Just yesterday? If it really ran like crap after it was serviced, you should have insisted that it was underperforming.

Someones hit the nail on the head.

i knew alot, just not about the hardware, i was moderatly savvy, but i knew for the most part, i knew main compnents, troubleshooting, ect

anyway, i knew more than them,. and i just want a new board outta the thing and that dosent bother me really,

i just want a letter of admittance of them being at fault,

i idd, they said it was 100% fine, even thoguh i knew better, my mother said nope, it runs ok, and i got into a arguement with the guy and he said, well , ive went to school for this, and trust me, i know better aobut this than you

I'm sensing an extreme lack of maturity on the part of 2gigs, and do not believe that Best Buy employees have said to him the things he claims they have said.

We're being jerked around.
