Just wanted to know what everyone is using these day... i predict in this group that 56k is slowly going the way of the buffalo, but who knows...
 
DSL here... as with most people on this forum are broadband connected.

As for 56k going away, I think you may be mistaken.

We have a long way to go before the majority of the United States is converted over to broadband. Most people really do not need the extra speed over a 56k yet. The price will have to go way down for it to become mainstream.
 
I would have some of the most expensive DSL or Cable i can afford if i had it in my area but i dont so i'm stuck on 56K. I live in a rural area and the ISP's just dont care about getting broadband access out in my area.
 
Well my modem is a 56K modem but my phone lines are so crappy I get 26.6 at best. To top it off it is the only service available to me. Hills and trees block satellite.
 
Well, broadband is the way it's going, I have it, fucking rocks. But the VAST majority still have dial-up. It'll take some time before the majority is on broadband.

I could get DirecWay or Starband but i refuse to pay for that crap. Its too expensive and it sucks for gaming.

I connect between 30-40kbs but that still isn't good. I wish i could at least connect at the full 56k speeds.
 
i think broadband gained the majority about a month ago, not sure ill try to find the article

I have DSL. We were lucky to have a person working for the ISP :p

We're the only ones around here that have DSL!

i feel for you... i was on 56k until early october this year. of course, verizon is teh suXor, so i've gotten 32kbps connection speeds. max (i've gotten) of 864kbps. my average connection rate is probably about 400kbps. still... 32 isn't that uncommon for me nowadays. i already hate verizon dsl.

Actually, the majority of those in the US are connected via broadband. According to a Nielsen/Netratings October report, 53 percent of internet users in the US are connected via broadband connection. Europe's on the way as well, with 50% of all users connected via broadband. In fact, Italy saw a 120% increase in users and the UK a 97% increase in the past year alone.
 
Where is the spot for wireless connection man? It's not quite as fast as cable or dsl... at least the one I have. :p

the 56k infects my computer.

could get wireless but it too expensive right now
500 set-up + 65/month for 1.5Mbit down
 
Comcast cable modem at home, huge multiple T1's / T3's at work......:cool:

I curse under my breath every month when I pay the damn Comcast bill. But, it's like crack; one taste, and all will / common sense go right out the window.....:rolleyes: The DL speeds rock....no going back now.

I'm paying for SBC Dsl @ 3000/784 , but the actual modem says its connected at 1984/416. Its plenty fast, but come on.
 
needs 'other'

wireless, called 'wireless DSL' by the isp. 1.5/1.5 advertised and I just about get it.
 
ADSL provided by Earthlink through Sprint. 3000/512

My house is right next door to the DSL station thing and I never have problems. According to my modem and my server, I actually get 3560/720.

Well most cable connections should spank a T1 on DL. If you have greater than T1 upload though, thats pretty nice.
 
1.5/256 DSL here. I think it would of been a good idea to split cable and dsl apart. I'd be interested in seeing that ratio.

Started a poll on just that question: cable or dsl?

im in the same boat man, i feel your pain, i have lived other places and paid $120 a month for the best dsl available and i will still do so, but i can only get dialup, and a SHITTY dialup at that. i live on an indian reservation, how long u think it will take for them to care about putting broadband out here? hmmm....
 
cable here. theres nobody in my neighborhood who has cable internet, so i get ALL the bandwidth. :p i LOVE it. :D
 
I have DSL but I am thinking about making the switch to 56k with Speedband by Juno, I hear it kicks ass. [/sarcasm] :p
 
If anyone is family with new york, long island especially I have optimum online, best service ever. I dunno what they claim for speeds but I pay like 40 bucks or something.
 
i definitely don't think that dialup is dead, far from it... i just get the general feeling that here in the US more and more people are leaning towards broadband. And i definitely assumed correctly that people that read these forums are overwhelmingly broadband
 
I'm Currently Running Comcast Cable at 3300/256. Just got a visit the other day from comcast saying I was going to be without Internet/Cable TV for a while on Monday so they can Upgrade the lines in our area to Fibre Optic... He said our Internet will be even fast when their done.... Already download stuff at about 390kb/s :D
