anyone have experience with sempron cpus and folding? do they produce less/more? compared to their brother cpu mhz-wise, thx :)

Are you on a socket 754 or socket "A" board?

A sempron would overclock far past what that will. The 754 semps are exellent overclockers. I ve had two, one did 2.6, one 2.7, both on stock cooling and cheapish boards. Can't argue with that. I think that 3200+ would hit 2.4-2.5 max. Its a newcastle, those werent terrific OCers. Im actually incrediably surprised newegg still sells that. Newcastels havent been in production for ages.

Better... but i'd still take the semp. Its $52 cheaper for a 2600+. Being that cache doesn't matter with F@H, and there otherwise basically the same core, and should OC right about the same, the semp seems like a better match. It's just my preferance though... semps have been good to me in the past, they are dirt cheap for the performance they can put out.
 
Semprons are actually pretty good. There's a Sempron 3100+ with MB combo for $70 from Fry's that keeps floating around. And from what I've heard, the motherboard is actually pretty good for overclocking. It's getting awful hard to beat that sort of performance/price.
 
the only diff i see between mine and some of the other 64s is only 256 cahce, everything else is the same.

Well sorry to say it, but I feel like there will be alot of people gasping on July 23rd when core 2 launches. We've already got a woodcrest system folding for us, seems to be doing pretty darn well.

Not me! Conroe is damn impressive (and Kentsfeild, :eek:), but I will not be getting it. I like AMD, and will always support them. I don't want to upgrade my rig right now anyways. Performance is where I want it, and I'd really like to skip DDR2 all together. I think I will be able to hold out for a year until K8L and (hopefully) DRR3 hit.
 
I'm afraid I will be going to Intel for the next round. Especially if the Core 2 duo's turn out to have decent power levels (might wait for mobile versions). Single Core systems don't make sense for folding rigs (PPDP$) so I can't imagine going with a Sempron. They do fold fine though.

Nothing to be afraid of, I'm sure. If Intel's on top for the next round, good for them. If I'm building a machine and they have the cheapest/fastest processors, I'll buy them. Likewise for AMD. I don't quite understand the loyal-to-the-end fans of one company vs. another....

Because Intel is evil. I can only imagine what things would be like if AMD didn't exist. Quite frankly, I believe AMD is going to recieve an ass kicking this fall, and I won't be part of that.

So, yes, I suppose I am loyal to the end, but here's to hoping the end doesn't happen :p
 
What's the first step to overclocking? Changing the Vcore? Is it that simple?

I had a significant amount of my savings in AMD (stock) for a while so there was some brand loyalty. I dumped it all a few weeks ago.

No, its not quite that easy. For one thing vcore = heat. The more you increase it, the hotter things get. Also, not all chips will respond to voltage the same way. Some love it, some hatei it. The first step would be increasing the FSB to see how high you can get while still stable on your stock vcore.
