HOT: *tiny energy sub* ESW-M6

That is a good price for that item but lets not kid ourselves and call it a sub. It clearly rolls off too high to be one. However it would make a great mid-bass for listening to music.

Just don't buy it expecting in your face sub sonic impact, it can't do it.

I was thinking the same thing. With a low freq in the 40's, it I don't think it really qualifies as a subwoofer. IMO to be called a sub it should at least go into the low 30's, with below 25 being much better. My satellites will hit the 40's, so there wouldn't be much to gain by adding this.

As far as the deal itself, I have heard good things about energy and this is awful small for what it does. I would probably not feel right about dropping 200 on something though and then not having it hit where I would expect it to.

I've been eying Energy speakers for quite while, and this is by far, one of the hottest deal I've seen. I agree with the others though, spec-wise, it does not deem itself subwoofer quality, but for the money, you can't complain.

Looks good for room-filling music/dialogue mid-bass type stuff, in a tiny package with a high wife-acceptance-factor.

With a little floor isolation it looks like it would be more apartment/neighbor friendly too.

Those looking for full subsonic bass reproduction from movies like War of the Worlds should obviously look elsewhere.

$200 seems like the right buying price for what it is, good deal imho.

I know it's not a "proper" sub however in room response positioned correctly it should hit mid 30's pretty well. it's much better suited to smaller rooms since it will have a hard time filling large rooms.

Verge, did you read any of the reviews?
With proper placement it should hit mid 30's in room response.

As I kinda hinted at in the OP it's a nice sub for a small room that doesn't have much space for a sub.

6.5 is a woofer not a subwoofer. Why not just buy a 2.0 system with 6.5 inch woofers that will go down to 40 hz then you would have more WAF because there would be no sub at all. I agree this is a great price if you want this item but I just question why you would want it.

Because with this, you can high pass the mains at 80hz, lowering their distortion in the midrange in comparison to forcing them down to 40hz.

Just because a subwoofer is small does not make it not a subwoofer. I have a 6.5" sub that goes down to 20hz. It doesn't have too great of an spl, but is plenty for small or medium sized rooms. There are a couple ways to get extension, and while woofer size is one of them, so is cabinet design and excursion. I have 6.5" TMWW mains that go to 37hz, and everything sounds better with the mains crossed at 80, even though the subwoofer only has 1/4 of the total woofer cone area of the mains.

I wish there was another name for these things other than subwoofers to differentiate their prodcut category....a name like standalone woofer or something, because thats what they are.

This may be a good deal for this speaker, but I'm with others that say it's not a sub. My mains hit 25hz easily, but this would be OK for reproducing most music where you don't often go much below 50-60 hz or hooked up to PC's where you will be located right next to it and aren't looking for rumble factor. You won't get soundstaging or the same smoothness in sound like if your mains were going the full range, but it should be better than just not being able to reproduce the lower tones at all. I'm not convinced it is worth $200 rather than just spending an extra $200 on better mains, but if you already have mains and can't sell them and use that cash to upgrade or have other reasons you are limited to $200 and looking to fill in some lower notes this isn't terribly priced.

I would like to hear what this sounds like. $200 buys a 12" sub that can be turned down. $150 gets you a solid 10", and $100 can get a good 8" sub.

Might depend on what you mean by "fill". One of the reviewers claims it fills two large connected rooms. I realize that, as with most user-reviews, you have to take them with a grain of salt.

Otherwise, as for everyone else: this product probably only has a niche customer base, so i wouldn't get my panties in a twist over it.

And i repeat: Looks good for room-filling music/dialogue mid-bass type stuff, in a tiny package with a high wife-acceptance-factor.

With a little floor isolation it looks like it would be more apartment/neighbor friendly too. It can also go underneath smaller desks, or even on top of a desk.

Get this subwoofer (ideally 2) if you have Magnepan MMGs!!!

I was considering it for under my desk as it seems to be the perfect size for that kinda thing. Price is back up to $299. I wonder if it'll go down to $199 over the weekend again...

YES, two would be a great combo with the MMG speakers.

Room positioning doesn't effect SPL that isn't produced. It's not going to effect -40db @ 35hz lol.

I have the sub and honestly i love it, Sounds great for music and it gets loud if you want it too.

Actually it can. "Room modes" can vastly increase the lowend output of a speaker system because those loudspeakers are exciting certain frequencies that the room resonates at.

That's great news :)
How's the sub setup in the room and how big is the room that it's in?

It sits under the cornor of my desk in the cornor in my room. The room is a loft but its about 18'x15'. I can post a pic of it if you all want... I love this subwoofer i paid 230 for mine and it was a great buy. Im not a audiophile but for someone who just really likes a little extra lower frequences i would recommend it.

199 for a 6.5 sub that goes to 42hz?

This is hot?

+1 :D

If this was $50 or $75 it might be worth looking at for a bedroom or computer system.

Truly nothing is that great at less than about $500 range, in my opinion, for a home theatre system worth watching. If this sub purchase isn't for your main setup and you don't mind that fact it is a bit less than half the price of something MUCH more capable, then go for it. Of course I think a top shelf subwoofer is relatively more important for the overall movie theatre experience than chasing the best mains or surrounds. The missing low LFE on this thing - the room shaking, pant flapping feeling - that entirety of what makes a quality sub fun is what this little tyke is 100% completely missing. Down to 30hz with in room gain is meant to suggest a positive aspect? All I can say is don't ever listen to a breed of subs that can dig deep. With this advice you'll save lots of money! Ignorance is bliss!

When you are ready to try something exhilarating give a pair of SVS or HSU subs with a low tune a listen in the mid price point tiers. If you want to go up a notch try a Seaton Submersive or JTR Captivator!

Way to go to the complete opposite side of the spectrum. ;)

You are correct, though. Buying a better sub for the same price or a little more will actually save you money over the years.

Unfortunately buying a $500+ subwoofer is a waste of money living in an apartment in San Francisco. Crank the volume up and you have people knocking on your door within a minute.

I take it you didn't read most of the previous posts. This sub is a niche product for a small select group of consumers, obviously not for you or many of us. It wasn't never meant to reproduce LFE or anything like that.

It's a dead deal anyway.

oh I read the entire thread before I posted... :)

I just wouldn't call this little sub a "gem" of a sub at $200 no matter what use you had for it. The reality of how this compares to a true home theatre sub needs to be understood to protect some average joe who might buy it thinking it was a knockout "hot" deal.

You can probably say the same thing about a $100 subwoofer

This is exactly why I posted this little sub. Good for emphasizing the low end a bit when space is very limited.

I visit the AVS forum a bit too much, same with head-fi and a few other choice audio addict forums :D
I'm very aware of the limited uses of this sub. I know there are much better subs out there for not much more. A good example would be the HSU stf-1.

Or just build one yourself.
:D
I did this myself with a titanic 1200 and a o-audio 500watt amp in a ~2cu. ft. mdf sealed box. Great musical sub for sure.

It's a niche sub for someone who is very limited on space such as under a desk or a wife that won't permit a "BIG" subwoofer... no she doesn't want ANY sub at all. So this is the compromise. poor guy :(

Win....../thread :)

I have that very amp on pre-order for when they come back in stock. Planning to build a Tuba HT sub with it. I might need a team of draft horses to move it around, but oh boy will it sound good :)

Have you asked any of the design guys over on avs if thats a good amp to use with the tuba; the subsonic filter puts a ton of boost on the lowest setting, depending on what setting you use it may be too much since that sub unloads somewhere around 25hz if i am not mistaken.

Get the Outlaw Audio M8 for $210 instead of the one in the OP if this thread for $200.

Much, much better buy.

Horn subs are pretty wild. I built the 6.5" anarchy horn that's on avs. I had the enclosure partially completed and ran it and thought" hey, that sounds ok" and then I finished it and let the PL Premium expand for an airtight seal and listened to it and was like "dayum". Enclosure design goes a long way. THT looks great but I wanted smaller and cheaper for my apartment.

Absolutely a much better buy. Some folks seem to think a better sub will be louder and more neighbor rage inducing, rather than the actual fact that a better sub will play cleaner bass at lower frequencies - and at lower volumes it will be more clear and solid.

It's a fantastic amp. though it was a tad concerning that the box it arrived in was pretty lite. That's simply because it's a BASH amp... VERY efficient too.

It sure is a better buy if you have the room for it. My original intent on this thread was to post a cool deal on a tiny sub for tiny spaces. Not the best sub for ~$200. There are LOTS out there that are better then the on in the OP.

I like energy speakers but not sure a small sub makes sense for most people. Most people wanting to spend this on a subwoofer should get a BIC from Parts Express - as its going to go down deeper..which is what most people need a sub for. I imagine this energy is more accurate in its limited range..
